Wrong ship reported sunk

Post by slane_slith »

Playing GC against AI using 1108r9.

DD Tucker had been hit and was flooding. During movement phase computer reported on the flooding of Tucker several times. When it finally sank screen flashed DD Hammann sunk. Next orders phase I checked ships sunk last turn. Tucker was shown as sunk.

Don't know if it means anything.

It's Fog of War. Sometimes we see much more outlandish messages like this.

Ok. Figured since it was "my" ship that it would have been accurate as to which was in trouble.

Thanks

I believe the message you saw (with the wrong name) could be seen by both sides. Obviously doesn't matter if you are playing the AI, but the same software is used whether you play AI or versus another human.

There is a bug in that the wrong ship may be reported if it received damage while performing the TF move.Even for the owning player.

Had a slightly more extreme case happen to me - in a running fight near Java (Jan/Feb 1942) several Dutch DD were sunk one turn. Each time, a USN DD came up as reported sunk (mostly Bagely-class IIRC). I was quite upset, but as my USN DDs were intact the next day I shrugged and let it slide.

Edit to add: all the USN DDs in question were no closer to Java than Pearl Harbor, and I'm pretty sure at least one was in San Francisco!

I had Kaga on my "Sunk" list for nearly two months thanks to a brave Dutch SS commander, but the CV showed up healthy off the coast of Sumatra in 2/42. The fog of war is usually more disappointing than rewarding; OTOH, Haruna is still on the "Sunk" list after a courageous RN DD captain put two torpedoes into her off the coast of Khota Bharu on 8/12/41...
