I am philosophically opposed to 2 x 2. It's the same way I feel about breast reduction surgery. It just shouldn't be done.

Breast reduction surgery can have significant health benefits in some cases. Never use absolutes, or it will always go wrong without exception.

The Game: Everything looks good, though I am anxiously hoping for one more quiet turn to get important transport and supply TFs unloaded at Paramushiro, Ketapang and Pontianak. The enemy didn't do anything anywhere today.
Adjustments due to GJ's Situation: The reports from GJ's AAR plus testing done by others, particularly Nemo, showing how even great CAP can be overcome has me concerend about Oosthaven. The Allies have 500 fighters there, but that's not enough to guarantee decent protection against a massed enemy air assault from the multitude of big fields nearby. I'm running alot of ships in and out of this port, but I'm going to try to lower my risk a little bit. I'm moving most of the battleships out of harbor. They'll patrol in tight circle well to the southwest, returning to Oost to refuel on occasion. I'll also reduce the number of merchantmen there - keeping perhaps 15 or 20, a number that will be sufficient to allow the Allies to transfer troops from Oost to the forward bases as the need arises. It's two years earlier in this game than in GJ's, but as with that game, me and Steve have a heckuva lot of power (aircraft and ships) operating in a very tight quarters between Signapore and Batavia.

CR, you may like 2X2 more than you think, but whether you do that or not I just wanted to chime in that I'm 100% opposed to breast reduction. It's immoral and wrong, I tells ya! [:D]

CR, regarding moving your capital ships from port and then coming back every now and then to refuel: why go back to port at all? Station a few AOs at sea and in Oosthafen and recirculate them. Keep the capital ships close, but at sea and refuel them from the AOs. That will reduce the chance those BBs ever get caught in port under a faltering CAP umbrella.
As an aside, GJs AAR has opened my eyes to a lot of situations that the game has not modelled well. Most are late war issues circulating around large aerial battles, the inefectiveness of naval flak and the overstated power of the IJN E escorts. It has been groundbreaking for me. I'm sure some of the more astute computer types were aware of this issue with CAP coverage and the engine's inability to adequately handle very large aerial battles, but it has been a real revelation here.

RE: Das darf nicht var sein!
Steve has asked for a bit of a moratorium, perhaps through the weekend, as he deals with a particularly trying situation at his job. He's pulling double shifts and the like until he can find and hire some new staff nurses.
Princep, that's what I've been doing for six months of game time. With the exception of about a month total in the yards at Colombo to upgrade, the Allied carriers (and some BBs) have been steaming in circles west of Cocos Island, supported by a variety of AOs, ranging from the big USN variety to the tiny TAN-# variety. This has worked very well - I have been surprised and pleased that SYS damage does not accumulate much under these conditions.

Of course, the CVs don't re-arm with at sea replenishment in 1942 (1943 either, IIRC) so every once in a while you have to bring them into port - or at least an undeveloped port with multiple AEs.
Steve pulled a triple shift yesterday, so it doesn't appear as if he has the time this week...
EDIT: I reviewed my message from him. He didn't work a triple shift, he worked a double shift but had to do the jobs of three people on the second one due to staff shortages.

CR, very kind of you to give Steve a break, sounds like he needs it. This is a clear example of the nursing shortage in America, I suppose. Kudos to Steve for what he does.

Just when I think were on break a turn arrives in the inbox. So, play may be sporadic, but not totally at a standstill while Steve attends to work needs.
NoPac: A very important day at Paramushiro, where two construction engineer units and two Sea Bees come ashore. The Allies now have 280 engineering squads and 50 eng. vehicles here. Supply is at 50k. The Allies should be able to make gooduse of the next four months of winter to build forts (currently level four), airfield and port.
CenPac: Some supplies safely landed at Ndeni. A large enemy TF of some kind is just to the east.
SWPac: A SeaBee unit utlimately bound for Milne Bay will reach Townsville tomorrow.
DEI: Quiet in the DEI as lots of engineers (most of a Sea Bee unit and an EAB) come ashore at Ketapang, where they were desperately needed. This airfield will reach level one tomorrow, which will then allow me to air transport "soft" units in from Oosthaven.
Burma: The Happy Stalemates continue.

I should be chagrined! Dismayed! Mortified! That I failed to post the China map as promised a good week ago. Here 'tis....

Thanks! You were just seeing if I was paying attention.
RE: China situation
Looks like you have stymied Chez in China, and now you have experienced Chinese troops and higher morale.
The area to the south around Wuchnag/Kukong appears to have few Japanese troops. IIR, there is quite a bit of rough ground there to retreat into if the Japanese use their mobility against an incursion. Running down to the coast would cut a lot of east-west roads to West China, Hong Kong and Indochina.
Have any plans you can reveal at this time?

RE: China situation
The Chinese will continue to seek opportunities to maul Japanese units. That will be their main purpose for the next six months to a year. They might make major feints towards important Japanese cities, coinciding with other major Allied offensives in the Pacific or DEI, just to cause maximum confusion. But the Chinese won't actually move on any IJ strongholds (fortified bases) until the Allies are well and truly on the offensive in the South China Sea region in late 1943 or 1944. At some point it is possible the Western Allies might invade coastal China. If so, that would be timed to coincide with a major push by the Chinese toward the coast.

You are making general estimates of what you could do 12-18 months downrange! [X(]
No wonder newbies like me feel intimidated at the idea of taking on the experienced players in a PBEM - I am lucky if I can think far enough ahead to put the right mix of xAP/xAK in a port to load a unit when it first appears!
I will continue to read and learn from masters like you. [&o]

RE: China situation
Experience means a heckuva lot in this game. This is my third AE PBEM, which followed two very long WitP PBEM. That's given me alot of time to try things - some of which didn't work on a spectacular level (a 1942 invasion of Wotje vs. John III), some of which somehow worked despite the multitude of mistakes I made (1943 invasion of Hokkaido vs. John III, 1943 campaign in DEI vs. Miller, and complete Sir Robin against Q-Ball) and some of which worked nicely (1944 invasion of China vs. Miller; Fortress Palembang vs. Chez).
I had no clue whatsoever in my early games, but playing the Allied side is pretty forgiving. But I have a clue now, which helps see possibilities and concomatant needs far down the road. [:)]

There is no way I spelled concomatant correctly, but I stubbornly refuse to look it up. I know how to pronounce it, I know how to use it in a sentence, and two out o' three aint bad!

RE: Das darf nicht var sein!
Have to get the right heading back: Das darf nicht var sein!, which suits this game perfectly.
