Rapana Class

Post by Don Bowen »

Anyone know if any of the merchant aircraft carriers (Rapana class and others) operated in the Pacific?

Anyone got artwork?

They didn't, Don. All of them were used in anti-Uboat ops as stop-gaps until CVE's were available.

Afterwards, some served as aircraft ferries in the Atlantic, whilst others reverted to tankers or dry goods carriers.

I guess I was hoping for some aircraft ferry work (especially the Dutch pair). Not to worry, I'll keep digging....

No reason you couldn't put them in as AKV's.

The artwork should be easy enough to do,going by what I have seen looking on the web.

When do you plan to put them in, Don? If it's late, I'd make them AKV's; that way, you also simulate the fact that most of the MACs retained a good percentage of their original cargo space, primarily because they had no hangar deck.

You probably have this already, but http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/ships/ provides a useful listing of Royal Navy aircraft carriers of all shapes and sizes, including ones that were still under construction by VJ-Day.

Now this is interesting..

Dutch tanker GADILA (7999grt) was damaged by Japanese bombing off Peak Island. She departed Singapore on 2 February and arrived at Melbourne on 10 March for repairs.
