28 march

Loyang, northern China, falls to Japan
A small Chinese Army becomes surrounded Chengchow.

Japans public will never learn how many sons it has lost in "this minor offensive"
It concerns Herbiesan not one Iota. His Generals have a victory.
That shoulld keep them at bay for a while.

my Nicks in this game have been shredded over Burma, and have proven totally unable to shoot down anything

however..................

Agaist bbf (game is now into 44) I had some nicks that had been naval strike training forever.............I had forgotten about them.
They have proven to be delightfully effective against cruisers and destroyers operating at 1000 or 2000 feet............[:D]

That's nice to hear. Trouble is there are only 3 units that can upgrade to Nicks.

As always, they are waiting on the Charge
Half a dozen Chief Petty officers stand on the wharf, taxi's idling. The plan has been dinner, a few beers.
It has been, as usual, a struggle to gather them all together, and now the last hurdle has to be crossed, getting the Charge of the ship.
He is talking to the duty petty officer, trying not tell him how to do his job, but telling him anyway.
"Rememvber petty Officer, the shaft seals are out, the emergency seals inflated. We only have one cmpressor available. You do know what to do if it fails?'
"Yes chief petty Officer, cross to the HP, failing that, use the portable."
"Good. But remember, watch it like a hawk. I am depending on you"

An impatient call from the wharf 'The beer goes warm Charge, come on!"
Charge drags himself away. Too many new men are duty tonight..........

Once again Hosho and his companion stare upwards .
Once again, the muted snarl of aero engines drifts down to them

And once again, the black streams of fire and smoke spear down to the earth.
The Burma air war rages on.

"How many do you think today Hosho?"
Hosho lowers his glasses." Far too many my friend. Our Airforce is paying a heavy price for our peace today"
"Ahh, but they at least eat full rations every day eh?"
Hosho nods silently at that. Yes, at least they did, not like them. They are a long way from any rail head. Imagine what would it be like with out the sacrifice of their eagles day after day?
It would not be good.
No. That is not beyond imagining

19 oscars to 7 hurricanes lost yesterday..........

30Mmarch 43

For three days straight, un escorted vengence dive bombers have been harrassing Myrintinka, last stop in the Burma line
Today, a full sentai of KI-43s lurk, waiting to ambush them, circling lazily at 15000 feet.

Today, the British come to fight.

They send every hurricane they have, and the battle rages all morning, planes arriving in small packets from each side, seeking, finding, engaging in deadly battle.
It is a furball of mammoth proportions.

3rd air force will end the day 30 plus fighters gone. They claim 21.

If this was the only battle of this day, these losses, this battle, might have been tolerable.
But it is not.

Over Mearuake, over PNG, 40 oscars escort 9 betties against shipping anchored at this cancer of a allied outpost.
30 spitfires, 20 P40's await them.
Spitfires are infinately better than hurricanes
Spitfires out turn, out run, out gun KI 43's
Spitfires eat KI 43's for lunch.

Japan loses 57 fighters today....................

31 march 43

They come today. Wellingtons. Mitchells. P 40's. Hurricanes. P-38's
And the bombs pound down on 55th division

And Hosho , cowering in his hole, looks at the sky, empty of japanese planes.
And wonders where the hell has the airforce suddenly gone?

Coldly Kato faces Tan and the Charge

Zuiho awaits the dock, due to move in the hour. probably the most vital thing Tan will do this year. yet here he is, facing Kato's cold wrath.
"let me get this straight engines. Two nights ago, the starboard gland space flooded, destroying vast amounts of stores. You tell me that the seal must have deflated, yet, you have no idea when, or , more importantly, where the water went?"

tan, rigid, struggles not to roll his eyes. (How many times must I repeat myself? ) beside him, he can almost feel the Charge's exsparation, his frustration.
"Sir, we found the gland space had water line of scum 6 inches from the hatch top, all the stores still wet. The seal inflated. I questioned carefully all of the duty watch..........none admitted to anything (as if they would, would you?). It is obvious to myself, that overnight, the seal deflated, the flood was discovered, and then discreetly pumped back out. The rounds sheets show nothing"

'I see ' Kato stares at his men. Today Zuiho enters dock, a docking she desperately needs. these men have spared no effort in telling me how damaged she is below. So, just how damaged.? A failed seal. No. I do not believe it. Inconcievable that Japanese sailors would lie........"
Bloody Stokers. Bloody problems. The war calls, and we sit on our arse fixing phatom problems and breakdowns.........
The war calls!
Can they not see that.
Bloody stokers..........

"Tan. I do not believe that the water was pumped out. You will pressure test the space, and prove its tightness. prove it leaked through enemy action damage, not dis honourable stupidity!'

"Hie!"

"Now dismiss. And Tan. There will be no delays. This ship sails in 14 days. Not an hour more..........."

Japanese troops enter Chengchow. The chinese fight bravely. There is nothing else for it, defeat will come no matter how they fight.
In all liklely hood, death too

Dockings are a unique experience
The slow sliding into the dock, the gates floating in behind, the ropes, the shoring, the careful calculations.
Then the slow, facinating process of pumping out the water. If you are lucky, you can watch with your companions, seeking who can see the dock bottom first, as the concrete walls rise around you.

For most stokers, you will sit on a pump, waiting, waiting until it loses suction, then you will shut it down.
The ship soon, will truly be a dead hulkWithin 2 hours, zuiho is dry, and Tan, the Charge, the CPO Chippee, and the dock master are on the bottom, staring at her encrusted arse.

There are several amazingly dished plates near the engine room. Those near misses truly were near misses.
But being originally built as a tanker, with just that little extra strength, has saved her this time.
The damage can be repaired. Alreday the high pressure hoses are at work.
'Four days Engineer" the dock master gestures at the damaged plates, "Piece of cake"
'Tan, Katos blast still ringing in his ear, has to check "Are you sure?"

"I am sure. I was over on Kaga this week. Now there is a job................"

Yeah, I saw it last year I think. That is a brave man :)

But my favorite is one in Yamato museum, 1/10 scale. Now that is serious modeling.

2nd April 43

Zuiho is no longer a dead ship. Now she is a hive of activity, with literally hundreds of workers swarming over her. Already she is clean of the accumulated passengers her hull has carted across the ocean, the stink of dying , rotting marine growth fills the dock.
A hundred gas axes have been at work, and now sunlight streams into her darkest holds, where the clang of hamers rings.
Tomorrow the new plates will go on, the day after, the grit blasting. The day after that, paint. the night after, the second coat.
In four days, she will come out.

And by some miricle, ten after that, she is due to sail again.

"How many items Charge?"
The Charge looks up, smiles at Tan. It seems but 15 minutes since he got out of bed, yet here it is, midday already............
"Just 360line item to go sir. 40 done today.'
"And the tubes?'
"Three boilers finished. 2A should be done tonight. Brickwork is done. Main engine top casing is going down tonight. "
Charge hesitates. "I need a decision on the rudder post bearings. Do you want to risk it?
Tan does not hesitate. "You told me that they would take a month. You know as well as I do what Kato said. I can't risk it. They can wait"
"Ok then, 358 items left, wish they all were that easy"
'Aaah, but thats why the empire pays us so well charge, to make decisions like this"
"Sir with all respect, go and find some one else to bulls#$t too........"

It is, of course not all work.
later that night, two men sit in a small , long narrow restaruant. You know the type of place, long, skinny, a row of booths down one wall, the window of the kitchen at the end(complete with scowling cook) filthy toilets out the back past him, a tall fence beyond that.
The place is small, smells, but serves(inevitably) fantastic food, at fantastic prices, even for wartime.
It is also, of course, packed.
The two men, Hirate, Okano, have eaten, and drunk well.
But now it is time to leave.
Hirate reaches for his wallet.. 'Oh crap, I have left my wallet onboard"
'What!, you were going to pay!'
'Well, obviously I can't, can I now. You pay, and I'll pay you back when we get onboard"
a silence
"great idea, but you were going to pay and I.............."
You didn't bring any money?!!'
No!'
Oh crap.
yes, Oh crap."

Three other men sit in the booth behind them. "Did you hear that?", Diogawa asks, shovelling food into hismouth "Our friends behind us are having bill trouble"
Uto leans, and looks. "Aren't they Zuiho men?. We can help them surely?"
Hidaka laughs. "Hold your fire Uto, we promised you good food"........."and entertainment" Diogawa finishes for him "just watch, and wonder at the inventiveness of the common sailor"

And so Uto watches........and presently Okano rises, and passes , headed past the kitchen out to the heads.
""And that Uto, I think is step one, give the other guy one minute..........."
And presently (about a minute later), Hirate too heads towards the toilets.....

'Surely they don't think they can get over the fence do you, ?' hisses Uto, it must be nine feet high....
"and it leads to the sewer" adds Hidaka
"and sewers, even for stokers, are very bad"

"then how.........."

It is at this moment, with a titanic crash, both men plunge through the roof, straight into the kitchen............

Invention is good. But not all good ideas work.
The chaos that ensues is magnificent to see.......................

Hirate and Okano will be very lucky. Having the Dictators son vouch for you is probably the best thing that they could wish for.

Uto will pay for the roof, the food, the damage, the cooks extra dose of sourness.
He will consider it worth it.
Memories of Hirate's red face, his bulging eyes, his arse deep in the pot, will live with him forever...............

3rdApril

Chengchow falls.
Japans northern armies consolidate. It will take many months to recover from this "victory"
The next offensive must wait .

55th division begins to walk south again. Supplying it , so far from the rail head, is impossible.
Burma command seeks a reserve.

Hosho's men don't know this, of course.
But they sing it

"The grand old duke of York
he had 30000 men
He marched them up to the front,
and then he brought them back again.

And when they were up they were truked
And when they were down ,
they were down
And when they were only half way up
the monsoon came and they drowned................"

The british add to the misery, bombing them relentlessly all day..............

4th of April

Fuchida, (47th sentai) move to Rabual again.
There is half an action against Liberators, who seem disinterested about doing anything else but probing.

Nobody gets hurt.

Wewak is pounded, again.

The war, it seems, is drifting along

But tomorrow, April 5th, EVERYTHING changes..................

yes very entertaining. My father was a sailor in the Vietnam era. He has told me some restaurant stories along the same vein as the adventures of PO Hirate and Okano. There are probably funny stories like this from sailors going back hundreds of years.
