Just curious, are you trying to pull a leg with your statements or are you serious. Besides that, who knows how your downfall scen looks like.

Go review the actual combat results of WW2, and ask yourself who's pulling who's leg? The one that says "omg it's 1941 and my cruiser didn't score but one hit against the enemy, game engine fail this suck it needs to be recoded so my cruiser doesn't suck" when factual history backs up allied cruisers sucking, or is the one pulling the leg the one that says, "oh, your cruiser only made one hit. Sounds about right for the allies in 1941" ???

Your ships are performing as they should. Major suckititude, just like irl. I fail to see the reason for your rant.

you fail to see anything that is related to naval combat, this is making it quite hard to argue. You have a heavy cruiser which fires roughly 1300 shells of it's main armament and you think in daylight that ship should miss 1299 times? Yeah? If so, fine with me as it nicely pictures both of our points and arguing in any direction wouldn't make much sense as you are sitting on Jupiter with me on Mars.

Not really CT, I'm just reviewing your combat results and comparing them to the few examples we have of actual naval combat results from late '41/early '42... and I think the results you achieved in these battles mirror "the actual war" much moreso than what you think those results should be mirror the actual war.

You're using battles in which the IJN fielded heavy cruisers that outgunned the Allies as examples why they perform badly when they are outgunning the enemy in the game ....

By the way, did you deliberately leave out the naval battle of Balikpapan ?

I mean, lol, in the Battle of Sunda Strait, the Japanese sunk more Japanese ships than the allied ships did. Yes, you read that right. The Japanese sunk more Japanese ships than the allies did. Good job CA Houston!!!!!

In all of the above the Allies managed to at least hit a few targets.

Dorman's vs Takagi's force as an example for this one here with Louisville vs two Kamikaze class DD? 5 CA/CL with 9 or 10 DD vs 4 CA/CL and over a dozen DD to be compared with 1 CA vs 2 DD?

IIRC a Kamikaze class DD carries 4x12cm guns (in open mounts?), making it 8x12cm guns vs. 9x8in and 8x5in and 4x3in on Lousville with the Kamikazes trying to defend the freighters. With the abstraction of ammo rounds and what Louisville used in this engagement we are speaking about roughly 1500 shells fired in this engagement.

And the hit rate is not even 0.5%? In daylight and perfect weather conditions? If we take your example and this one in the game the only relation I can see is that it both times was a Japanese victory. [:D] So how many heavy cruisers expanding their full main gun ammo storage would it have taken in 42 to damage (let alone sink) two not so great IJN DD? Five? Six? More? You know that Asanagi and Yunagi weren't mini Yamatos, those destroyers were comissioned some time in the early or mid twenties IIRC.

The result of my engagement in the game was no ship sunk (not even heavily damaged) and a USN CA sailing away after firing 1500 shells. WOOOT?

Acepylut, I like the most when you quote Sunda Strait because Houston and Perth couldn't be much more outgunned and it was a night fight with roughly 100 Long Lances launched with the engagement happening at close range, not a daylight engagement when we have a modern USN cruiser and two ancient IJN destroyers. I wouldn't expect Houston and Perth to win a night battle in the game against what they faced at Sunda Strait in real life, not at all.

lol, face it, your 1941 ships still suck in 45 and those sure don't whipe the floor with the IJN. Get used to it.

Nope, not my experience. Mid 44 in my game and my Allied surface fleets have given as good as they have gotten. I got punched around in 42 but am doing most of the punching now. Actions were balanced in 43 but with my improved torpedoes, fletcher class DDs and modern CA/Cls, I am doing just fine in 44. And this is with mostly pre 44 crew skill levels.

I will say that Japanese surface ships are stronger than they should be. Should not be any close fights in 44 but I suspect that was a design decision to make the game more competitive for Japanese players. I don't like it but am OK with it considering the ships I am getting.

Aside from the first year of the war. I have had no trouble going head to head with Japanese surface forces.

My rule of thumb is smaller multiple TFs with seven to nine ships-no more than that.

Rarely use BBs in night actions.

DDs and PTs only in low visibility situations. Leave the CAs and CLs home in low moonlight.

Never felt that Allied surface ships fully sucked-especially after they got radar.

The Fletcher DD is the only DD in the game with some armor. It is a deadly ship for that reason.

BTW, I agree that Houston should have served you better but she was not a modern ship. She was scheduled for refit but never made it. Had very old fire control system and the constant fighting had worn her main gun barrels to the point where here shells tumbled in flight. She really should have been pulled out and sent home.

Well, Houston is not really something to scream about, she met a superior force of several DD and a CL (being in a surface combat TF) as numbers do count in this case, I was not amused about seeing her spending her full main gun ammo storage for nothing but you just have to forget that aspect and think about it in a way of "the CA met a superior force and retreated" or something like that, but CA Louisville met an inferior force of two ancient DD in an amphib TF and wasn't able to do anything either with all her main gun ammo spent and unlike Houston against the halve dozen DD and the CL, the Louisville encounter really made me upset.

Could even imagine it in a way of the two Kamikazes attempting to charge the cruiser in a suicidial way to help the convoy trying to get away and even if the Kamikazes succeed, I would expect one to be sunk and one damaged or something like that. Not firing 1500 shells for nothing and the Japanese just happily moving on. Doubtful that Allied gunfire in daylight was that bad that it took 5000 8 inch shells to sink a 1920s IJ DD, not even in 1941.

I've seen battles where the Allies do OK and battles where they do horribly, I've never seen them do really well though, Taffy 6 style.

The one I saw that the Allies really did well that I recall well was a daylight action between 2 Colorado BBs and Mutsu/Yamashiro. The Japanese scored a lot of heavy shell hits but they all bounced off the armour (to my own surprise) while the USN hits penetrated, so clearly a massive hardware advantage there. I didn't realise those old BBs were so meaty. Of course the chance of daylight combat with them is slim, but they are good at it, I'll give em that!

enemy invasions continue all around the map and I have both intel and sightings that really concern me about where all those IJ convoys seem to head to... my troops are in full retreat/reposition mode trying to get into positions they can actually hold for some time without being slaughtered instantly without achieving anything but to reach those positions it will take some time and the IJ convoys have the slingshot/amphib bonus feature which will mean I expect the IJ showing up earlier in many places than we do...

this pretty much tells me bluebook knows exactly what he's doing, earlier than I could do anything about it he invades Palembang, with perfect hindsight he will bring exactly the troops he needs to take the place... I'm not really worried about losing Palembang now or in a couple of months, I'm more worried about his insane speed he's moving forward because that will mean he'll reach important areas earlier than I would like him to do as a month more or less for me could mean having a nice defense or nearly no defense, depending on where he is going and what I'm reinforcing first and in what order...

You better make sure you include defences against that sort of thing if you are sending convoys into areas where air cover is not properly set up, if he's raiding aggressively like that you might get an embarassment happen off Noumea or something if you've scrimped on convoy defence... Though QE seemed quite able to defend herself, and AMCs are pretty much one shot weapons given they got no armour.

Sunda Strait - IIRC that's the accidental (not intended by either side) surface action where the IJN torpedoed some of their own transports with troops aboard.
Palembang - I've had it taken that early. Try to bombard it with your own cruisers to close the airfield and bomb the Oil with B-17s from Java. Success will be pretty limited because of B-17 crews' low skills.

It just shows again that bluebook well knows what he's doing, makes it a great game, I'm sure he will cause me lots of headache, which definitely is good for the campaign.

Not having lots of escorts, those that I have are just enough not to see subs attacking at the surface. [:D] Those escorts aren't able to deal with raiders the size of a DD but in the end I guess the fear to run into those raiders is bigger than the actual threat.

Daylight experience isn't that bad for the USN, hence why I was quite grumpy to see the cruiser firing 1500 rounds for one hit on two charging 1920s destroyers.

Yeah, the IJN fired something like 90-100 torps and also hit their own transports unloading there. How comes, I thought the Japanese would all be super heroes? [:D]

We've got a hr that restricts the Allied from strategic bombing of any Japanese held Allied territory, same as I had in all my PBEMs.

The experience gap between Iowa and New Jersey is especially annoying, since they are like a month apart.  It does seem odd that there can't be some kind of training or experience gain for the early war ships to make them competitive with the fresh ships later.  I presume the engine can't handle adding some kind of crew experience upgrade to ship upgrades (which would seem to be the easy hack fix, were it possible).

Yes, this has always been the problem. I got no problem with the starting exp. But my dear old Houston has been in the fight since day one of the war. Seen plenty of fights and action. There should not be a crew on the map Allied or Japanese with a higher exp level. That is just not going to happen.

The threat is there but really not one to be feared. Smaller convoys and alternate routes until you get enough escorts. The Allies can lose a few ships. It does look as if your opponent is a good, aggressive player.

yes he is. I thought going round Tahiti would have been alternative enough. [:D] I'm not really fearing the loss of a couple of ships (even though I hate losing ships, no matter which) it's more the fear of losing troops aboard the ships if it's a troop convoy.

6 days into the war and Kendari is invaded and will be inevitably lost... got a surprise for the enemy though as Force Z was sent out from Soerabaja to engage this convoy that has been spotted earlier already... refused from ordering Force Z to go in at night as I expect some heavy cover for this amphib operation but during daylight, Force Z should be a threat to enemy battlewaggons or heavy cruisers... this of course means the invasion will take place and Kendari is lost... I can't and won't try to stop the enemy's super fast advance through the SRA and the rest of the map but I will try to inflict losses while hoping to minimize mine...

this is the whipe out in the Allied's favour I mentioned earlier in the AAR, against an inferior enemy force but still... I was totally amazed and shocked at the same time not to see any surface combat TF covering the invasion TF, this is the only convoy in the hex and we hit 'em really hard... when reinforced Force Z arrived, the Japanese were anchored which is pretty much the worst that could happen to them... especially Repulse performed excellently, no wonder having 70+ daylight experience, POW not really performing bad either... I really don't know why bluebook included CA Haguro in this TF while not having a TF to cover the invasion convoy, seems like his first FUBAR and he get's terribly punished for it losing more or less the whole convoy including the heavy cruiser...

on the other side, Haguro didn't do all that bad, scoring several hits on my ships, causing substantial damage on three of my cruisers and a destroyer... watching the replay took over an hour but I do have to say I enjoyed it... [:'(] at the end of the turn, both POW and Repulse had on main gun ammo left, the cruisers spent the majority of their ammo including torps... Force Z is now retiring to a port big enough to replenish and the damaged cruisers will be taken out of action for repairs too... hope the loss of his amphib shipping in this area will slow him down a bit, I would guess these troops and ships were tasked to first take Kendari and to jump onto Timor right after, which should be delayed a bit now due to the loss of shipping... we scored over 150 victory points with that convoy today for no loss on our side, means the enemy has to score 600 points somewhere else to make up for an autovictory...
