Sound issue: old & new versions

I have no sound in either the original version of Admiral's Edition or in the latest update. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game. The sound in Gary Grigsby's War in the East works properly as does the sound in TOAW. I also reinstalled my sound driver without any effect.

I am using: Win 64 bit Windows 7, HP dv7-1132nr laptop 4 gb ram.

EDIT:
I should add that the sound has been working fine in the past, and that the opening movie doesn't run either when I boot the game. Also, although the sounds works in War in the East, the introductory movie does not load.

EDIT: I am now downloading the HP audio drivers again.
