Class 2712 name

Post by elcid »

Years ago I found a mysterious class in WITP that did not correspond to any recorded RN ship I could
find. It was the Mullion Cove. Eventually someone - Andrew Brown if memory serves - identified
it as the Mulligan Cove - which indeed is a repair ship class of the right size and speed.

For whatever reason, WITP AE retains the error from WITP - and class 2712 is still named Mullion Cove
vice Mulligan Cove -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Em ... ire_Penang "Empire Penang was a cargo ship which was built by Bartram & Sons Ltd, Sunderland. Laid down as Empire Penang but launched on 10 July 1941 as HMS Mullion Cove. Completed as a maintenance ship."

1941 as her launch date appears to be in error as a couple of other sites give her as laid down 10-Jul-1941, launched 10-Jul-1944, see http://www.worldnavalships.com/director ... hipID=2618 for example, but the coincidental day and month likely explain that as a typo.

http://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/7305.html lists her as an example of the Moray Firth class and has a page listing members of the class at http://uboat.net/allies/warships/class/348.html
