Which ditch? [:-]ORIGINAL: Schanilec
I just hit the ditch.[:D]
Down here we call the Tasman Sea, between New Zealand and Australia the 'ditch'.
Hence when someone is going over to Aussie, it is called 'crossing the ditch'.
Just thought you should have that useless bit of info. [:'(]

Not to be too political on THE THREAD, but this just cements in my mind the difference between our countries and some others.
I can't recall the last time my government NTSB or other transport authority (or any other country that actually valued human life) intentionally installed something onto the roadway / rail system designed explicitly to kill or maim passengers. Unreal...
you're right, CB...that is WAAAYYYYY off the political scale...[;)]

Nope. Judiciously implemented and designed to disable or stop one errant vehicle.
Nope-the analogy you're looking for here would be for those stop light cameras to be hooked into an overhead targeting system for an orbiting Predator drone. Run the red light and you get lazed with a CO2 laser. A moment later, you and your vehicle disintegrate after a hellfire missile impacts.
Ah, heck: the low tech equivalent: Every intersection is loaded with 4 x 500lb. bombs wired to the stoplight camera. You run the light and one of them closest to you blows up.
THAT would be analogous...

IIRC, on the eastern seaboard of the US, we call the Intracoastal Waterway "the ditch". The IW is a slightly inland route for barges and pleasure craft that runs from Massachusetts to Texas. In some areas it uses existing rivers, inlets, bays and sounds and in other areas it is a canal tahat was dug to connect those existing bodies of water. It basically allows smaller craft to avoid sailing in the more dangerous open Atlantic Ocean (the Outer Banks of North Carolina aren't known as "the Graveyard of the Atlantic" for nothing!
More useless information for those who like to clutter their minds...
fair winds,

In other words 'The people were placing themselves in great danger and the only way to save them was to make their fatalities nearly certain.'
The more general form is "We're from the government. We're here to help!"
