By wolfpack do you mean multiple subs in a single TF or multiple single sub TFs?

Multiple subs in a single TF.

I did try having multiple single subs in the same hex but in my experience at least they were FAR less effective.

I have them patrolling mostly in pairs, now, though even in '44 there arent enough to pair up every sub, so there are some singles running around still. I dont' think I've actually lost a single wolfpack submarine yet... either thats some amazing coincidence or wolfpacks really do work.

I've also regularly seen multiple subs in a wolfpack attack on the same day, while if you have multiple single sub TFs in a hex it seems only one of them typically will attack a passing convoy.

I will give it a try. But are you playing an email opponent or the AI? This can make a difference.

Raised the issue with totally undamaged subs breaking off surface engagements in the tech forum, reason for the behaviour seems to be a die roll that looks at the agressiveness of the sub skipper + damage of the sub... and the routine seems to use values that are IMO a bit off as no matter how agressive (or not) a skipper is, a sub should NOT break off it's surface engagement when there is no damage at all... that's my opinion but my opinion won't change things, so we have to continue with something that has no realistic evidence at all I guess, have never heard about sub skippers fleeing from unescorted freighters while staying on patrol when their sub is in PERFECT shape...
If you consider that one lucky hit may render the sub unable to dive, that makes some sense to me.

really? Wonder why most attacks were driven home on the surface in real life then. A lucky hit can sink a BB, wonder why IJN BBs don't run from mine then. A lucky hit can ignite any ships magazines, a lucky hit can do literally everything. But that is no good reason to break off a sub attack when the sub is in perfect combat condition, no sir! [:-]

Again, no problem with the 20 sys 20 flt settings to break off attacks (at such a damage I wouldn't have my subs patrolling anyway) but a sub with 2 sys damage and nothing else breaking off attacks on unescorted freighters because the skipper is one of the 75% of all USN sub commanders that haven't got suicidal agression ratings is just off, isn't plausible and sure hasn't got any historical, real life evidence. It's a nice feature but hitting the right value was a miss in this case.

If that were the skipper's concern though, why would that skipper engage on the surface in the first place?

There are two plausible reasons. First, torpedoes are expensive and subs can't carry nearly as many of them as they can carry deck gun shells. Second, the sub may not be operating under "unrestricted submarine warfare" rules yet, and the international conventions suggested that the crews of isolated merchant ships should be given time to abandon ship before it was sunk. This last is unlikely to be part of the AE code, I grant you.

Also the first is more than unlikely part of AE code. [;)]

damn it, the enemy moves a carrier TF into position 300 miles North of Darwin and launches a strike against my cruiser SAG sitting at Darwin... I didn't spot the carrier(s) and the 50 P-40E at Darwin were far from enough to keep most of the Kates from bombing my cruisers... one bomb hitting Exeter bounced off her belt but the rest penetrated the deck armor... Exeter is in horrible state and burning, we try to save her but the odds are bad... with a Cap setting of 80% we manage to get a whopping 26 fighters for Cap... bluebook stated "nice trap" but in fact it wasn't as I didn't spot his carrier(s) and if I would my cruisers would have run... the strike came from CV Shokaku, no other carrier was identified and I wonder if bluebook completely split up KB... [&:] weather unforutnately wasn't bad so that didn't help us...

Oh, it's against a human. Not a very experienced human though. But... I see submarines engaging ASW forces all the time, including super Es, with millions of 1 x 12 depth charge attacks. So there are clearly hunter-killers working in areas with subs.

I did actually retire the Brit sub force due to heavy losses and then after a little while came back with them organised into pairs, and they did much better.

The AAR is up, but as I'm lazy its mostly just combat reports with a bit of explanation, you can see the subs in action though.

The elite Zeroes on escorts did what escorts usually do, not that good... We also bag a couple of Kates but in the end the enemy gets a heavy cruiser for a dozen aircraft...

Exeter is in horrible state, even though she didn't suffer a lot of major flt, I have no hope of saving her... even if she survives the next days and won't sink in port, she will sooner or later finished off by inevitable airstrikes out of Timor... I can't move her, she would go down in a day...

Raised the issue with totally undamaged subs breaking off surface engagements in the tech forum, reason for the behaviour seems to be a die roll that looks at the agressiveness of the sub skipper + damage of the sub... and the routine seems to use values that are IMO a bit off as no matter how agressive (or not) a skipper is, a sub should NOT break off it's surface engagement when there is no damage at all... that's my opinion but my opinion won't change things, so we have to continue with something that has no realistic evidence at all I guess, have never heard about sub skippers fleeing from unescorted freighters while staying on patrol when their sub is in PERFECT shape...
If you consider that one lucky hit may render the sub unable to dive, that makes some sense to me.

really? Wonder why most attacks were driven home on the surface in real life then. A lucky hit can sink a BB, wonder why IJN BBs don't run from mine then. A lucky hit can ignite any ships magazines, a lucky hit can do literally everything. But that is no good reason to break off a sub attack when the sub is in perfect combat condition, no sir! [:-]

Again, no problem with the 20 sys 20 flt settings to break off attacks (at such a damage I wouldn't have my subs patrolling anyway) but a sub with 2 sys damage and nothing else breaking off attacks on unescorted freighters because the skipper is one of the 75% of all USN sub commanders that haven't got suicidal agression ratings is just off, isn't plausible and sure hasn't got any historical, real life evidence. It's a nice feature but hitting the right value was a miss in this case.

I must admit, I have no idea how the penetration of a 4 or 5in gun is. But it makes a huge difference whether you need an extremely lucky hit in a ship's magazine, or a random hit somewhere in the hull.
Also, the main purpose of a sub is submerge. So one hit may end this role-defining ability.
When I played Silent Hunter, I always attacked unescorted ships surfaced. But even dispite being destroyed only forces me to reload and not to die behind my computer, I submerge when the enemy shells crawl closer...

Still, that's only an interpretation that might help to live with the code, to explain it. Whether this really is borked or whether my understanding was the idea - I can't tell.

also I-18 got a skipper we can only dream of... but escorts are nearly invincible nowadays while they were sunk in the dozens after release... takes probably one and a halve dozen attacks to hit a DD... I am amazed that there are so many enemy subs operating in this area, as amazed as I am about the inability of my search aircraft to detect those subs as none of them was spotted by air search earlier... I obviously need better pilots but they aren't available yet...

it proved impossible to put out the fires on Exeter while sitting in Darwin's port, fires went up and sys dam is at near maximum... I decided to scuttle the heavy cruiser which is the first CA to be lost during the war...

yes, no doubt that shell hits would ruin a sub's day but don't get me wrong, this is no explanation at all that an undamaged sub breaks off the attack on unescorted freighters... now and then, oh well, if this happens due to some strange reason a couple of times during the whole war, oh my... but it seems I am on the extreme ending of things again, as you can see, it just happens too often... probably because my enemy hasn't got enough escorts but HEY, this should prove a problem to him and not to the attacking subs!

Most sub attacks were driven home during the night ON THE SURFACE! There are no surface attacks in the game as soon as a single escorts covers a 100 ship TF, oh well, code limitation... but when you see UNDAMAGED, saying it again, UNDAMAGED, subs fleeing from unescorted xAKL because some kind of die roll decides the skipper would be so cowardly (75% of the most experienced USN skippers) then I dare to say: THERE IS SOMETHING NOT CORRECT!

As to Silent Hunter, well that is an UBI Soft action game and I can only hope NOTHING of such a game will ever be the evidence for anything in WITP AE. [;)]

I remembered when I tried to get in front of a IJN Battlegroup once. Surfaced, of course. The SCTF included two "Super-Battleships", aka Yamatos.
Then suddenly, I was destroyed without any damage before. I guess my little sub made contact with a 46cm shell

that's a loooong time ago... shocking enough I have been playing WITP and AE for 7,5 years already! [X(] With a break of two or three months, non stop PBEM.

Yes, its quite addicting.

Too sad there's no such game for Europe. If I had the time, I might consider restarting my WitW-Mod.
