AI Slowdown?

Post by Toby42 »

I've noticed that with the last several patches there is a huge slowdown with the AI turns. I've been playing several of the Grand Campaign games against the German AI and the slowdown is pretty bad. I get not responding quite a lot. Several patches ago, it ran pretty fast? Was something changed to cause the slowdown?

I run the AI at 0 on the messages and shrink the map as much as I can to hopefully speed things up, but to no avail!

Can you send me a save file of a slow turn with how long it takes on your system please?

I'll restart the '43 Capaign and time how long it takes. I'll send the save file to you. PM or to your email?

I just ran and timed the '43 GC with a German AI. It only took 15 minutes for it to run. That doesn't seem too bad! I'll keep an eye on it. Yesterday it took so long, that I quit the game and restarted? I kept getting ( not responding) in the title bar! I know that it was close to 30 minutes then. Maybe it was just an anomoly??? I can live with 15 minutes..

I have the same problem in my GC against Sov-AI. Up to 30 min.
Seems pockets are the problem. No pockets....fast AI-turn.

You've probably identified the issue. Gary's new encirclement routines require a decent amount of time to run. At certain times of the games these rouintes are abbreviated, but during good weather turns where one side has superiority, it has to do a lot of checking to determine what's possible before going for a pocket. This could probably use some optimization, although I'm not sure if it's possible. Gary did try to reduce the impact of the routine as he had noticed in his tests that it added time to the turn.

I'm playing the small 3 turn Case Blue scenario and just experienced the slowest AI turn I have ever had. Was going to report it if it happened on the next turn.

Do you have a save that repeats the slowdown? If so please post it here as an attachment or send it to me.

I find that the more turns that I get into on a GC, the slower it runs! The initial turn goes very quick...

AI: better vs faster.

Post by governato »

Having to choose, I'd much rather prefer a 'better' AI, rather than a 'faster' AI. I do not mind taking a break between turns! Ideally one could choose between different AI levels, as in chess games, but I am not sure if this AI has been developed
with that option in mind.
