Are construction ships too eager to build research stations?

Are construction ships too eager to build research stations?

I don't tend to keep my construction ships under manual control (perhaps I should). But under AI control, they really seem way too interested in building research stations all over the place.

And if I understand the way research works, after a while this is not particularly helpful and might even hurt a particular line of research by changing the balance too much to one of the other lines.

Any way to slow them down, other than taking over manually?

Personally I delete all but one research station design, and update that last one to have less research modules but the same number of all types. Takes care of research balance and ensures there's not too many wasted stations.

I suppose it overbuilds to help the A.I empires.I tend to micro targets built by construction ships so it cannot.

Well, assuming you take care of your actual needs regarding research capacity through other stations, then all you need on a research station is just 1 lab, and I usually put 1 of each.

The bonus for research locations is Empire wide, so you do not have to have many labs in the actual research station, just 1 of the appropriate kind. - In addition, for each of the three kinds of research, you only get the Highest empire wide bonus for location. So theoretically you just need to grab the choicest three locations in the galaxy.

With the above in mind I began designing my research stations as back-up mines and gas collectors and alternate monitoring stations and pirate traps.

Mainly I allow them to be built to stop the other empires from sitting on those locations.
