I'm in the same boat as most ... get home from work at about 6:30 eat supper, talk to wife, check email ... my wife works a very early shift so I wait 'till she's gone to bed and send off my turns! I find I can handle about three games at a time with this system, and I can usually return one turn per day per game (with some exceptions). It boggles me how some players can handle more than this!! (Vik2, how the he** do you do it!! )

Good idea, Les. Here's a start:
Couple days ago I decided to bite a bunch of bullets and get SPWAW on my WinXP Home rig - I have been playing on a Win98SE machine for some time. But, says I to myself, knowing full well any attempt to think is fraught with danger, do I really want to install form the LV disk, then do all those tweaks and mods and still have to transfer a lot of scenarios and other files via CD-RW?
No, says I, I don't want to do that. Instead, I will zip the entire WAW directory, copy it to CD-RW, extract it there and see what happens. Did so and before firing up first time went to Mech.exe, brought up Properties and selected Compatibility = Win98.
Works like a dream, all the scens and the latest game I am playing survived intact and it runs great on WinXP. DX8.1 and 40.19 nVidia drivers. I had doubts on this but it turns out there simply wasn't a problem; not sure I would want to run WAW in anything but Win98 compat mode though.

Bing there is no need to fret over running SPWaW 7.1 in XP unmodified in any manner.
That is frankly the main reason why the arguement that SPWW2 is "more accurate" fails to interest me in some cases.
SPWW2 latest version as of today, will not run on XP unless you do something odd (which currently escapes me).
If you are experiencing trouble, it won't be XP's fault.
For those interested (which is probably few hehe), here is Sarge's pick of computer wargaming.
Steel Panthers WaW 7.1 specifically through Mega Campaigns if it must be solo. Against people any portion of Steel Panthers is fine.
Panzer Commander if you want to drive a tank around (it's a simple nice enough looking game, and it works).
Allied General (it needs a specific Wing32.dll file though). Simple game to run. likes XP with no hassles at all. Basic easy fun.
People's General. Runs with no fuss at all, lets you drive modern stuff around, a modern fix for a modern liker.
Panzer General 2, slightly different game, slightly nicer looking, same basic easy fun.
Strategic Command. You might not like some design elements, but the game runs well, and has an almost perfect interface. The only current grand strategy choice worth thinking about in my opinion.
Operational Art of War (it comes in so many releases, so I will just call it TOAW and you can assume I mean all of it). This game can play every wargame I have ever owned that is in between ASL and A3R.
If you have TOAW, you have almost every board game you ever owned on your computer.
I am waiting to add Combat Leader to this list still.
Essentially that is it folks. If your game is not on that list, then odds are your game is just not thrilling enough for me to care.
I will not pass judgement yet on Close Combat or the soon to be Close Assault, as I have not played them yet.
Tried to get the CC3 trial to run the the day, but it ddn't want to.
I might like Combat Mission more, but while it looks fun, the interface was not as user friendly, so it missed out on getting an A+ rating. I might give it A- though.

One of the reasons WAW works well on WinXP is it makes very few writes to the registry. Appears nothing at all critical, probably an MRU or two. This means an SpWAW folder can be literally dropped in your root directory with success. This isn't true of a lot of games, for various reasons.

Michigan is a big place; whereabouts are you? Are you a troll? From under the bridge? The fudgies are out in force today with their snowmobiles - a very much needed shot in the arm for local economy, we lost all our snow, now have 12"+ just in time for weekend.
Gaylord is golf in the summer, snowmobiling in the winter, Boyne steals most of the skiers from us, though we do have Slyvan Treetops which is a nice ski resort. Also championship golf at Treetops, in the summer natch, with PGA events held there.
Are you a stump jumper? My Dad used to say we were jackpine savages, with one leg shorter than the other from running around the side of hills. Have you been snipe hunting lately?

Middle of January, and we have only had one decent snowfall here in my neck of the woods at least (sort of central ontario, think 90 minutes north east of Toronto).
If I was wanting to get some decent skiing done I might be inclined to go south instead of north a look around Buffalo maybe (the great white south doncha know).

I play a lot of games, but my excuse is that I work in the game industry.
I'm a real big fan of the Panzer Campaigns, and Modern Campaigns series. I like a lot of what HPS has to offer, but Smolensk, Korsun, Kharkov, Normandy, Bulge, Tobruk, Middle East, Fulda and now KURSK are all great. I've played through entire campaign games of all but Middle East (almost through), Fulda (like 1/2 way), and Kursk (just started). It's a fantastic system, and for what it does it does it better than TOAW. But TOAW does so many more things that I still think TOAW is great and play it often. You know what tho? I noticed in Panzer Campaigns:Kursk that they switched the dispositions of the 3rd SS Panzergrenadier Division with the 2nd. Oh well, nothing's perfect. Heh. I also play a decent amount of Day of Defeat, a first person shooter with ww2 weapons. It's got a lot of good stuff. I've been playing an old Ps2 game called frequency lately too, a wierd game about music and pressing buttons to a rhythm. I've playing a lot of a real-time strategy game called Kohan:Ahriman's Gift which is really quite impessive. It, more than any real-time game I've ever seen, lays bare the concept of tactics and strategy. It creates an environment that supports logical tactical thinking, rather than that creating its own tactics resulting from the idiosycracies of its system. Blah, blah, like I said, I play a lot of games... but I guess computer/console games are my life.
