Why is the Vietnamese War not gamed?

Post by KG Erwin »

Please leave politics out, OK? I have a C-64 game which I thought was great, and featured battles from Dien Bien Phu in 1954 through the NVA 1972 Easter Offensive. Why was this game never updated and converted to a modern format? Matrix seems reluctant to cover historic modern conventional warfare, such as the Arab-Israeli Wars and Vietnam. Is no one interested? I find that difficult to believe.

There's also norm Kroger's operational Art of War III which has a few scenarios including a complete war monster.

Aces8 has or had a very good AAR going where he was duplicating historical US/Allied Operations - well worth a read.

There are a few gifted modellers building scenarios for ATG, for Vietnam and the Middle East both.
Here's one: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2956740
And ofcourse Grymme's masterpieces; http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2842432
He even has his own site with lots of ATG scenarios; http://atgscenarios.wordpress.com/

Have to admit though... played a few TOAW Vietnam scenarios... but not really my cup of tea. Don't know why that is, heck even First Person Shooters sort of "forget" about Vietnam.

I think it was the HPS game I got from JD a while back and I have a board game version of it too.

1C's Men of War: Assault Squad has a Vietnam game released. I play the WW2 version every now and then and it's actually a real hoot to play.

I had that game and the others that were put out by the same company.

The Vietnam game was excellent and had tons of what if scenarios. My favorite was the one where you had US air support in DBP.

I'm interested in Vietnam, though not at all interested in Arab\Israeli. So I'd be more than happy to see some tactical Vietnam games. I always think jungle Warfare works better at the tactical level.

Personally, I have little interest in modern warfare after the Korean conflict timeframe. This is primarily due to the lethality of modern weapon systems; and also some bias of the Viet Nam conflict due to serving in the US army at the time.

If you like the tactical side of things...there are a number of Vietnam era scenarios in Steel Panthers...

There are Matrix games in the works.  John Tiller Campaign Series Modern Wars and also Flashpoint Middle East.  But takes too long to finish. :(

Which weapon systems in Viet Nam were significantly more lethal than the WWI/WWII ones?

I wouldn't mind a good game on the vietnam war......but the one's out there don't do it for me.  Tactical would be good.  I really don't care for the HPS squad system.

Anything after WW2 does not interest me at all.
After 16 years, Civ II still has me in it's clutches LOL!!!
Now CIV IV has me in it's evil clutches!
