How will you play

This exciting new release is a faithful adaptation of the renowned Conflict of Heroes board game that won the Origins Historical Game of the Year, Charles Roberts Wargame of the Year and the James F. Dunnigan Design Elegance Award, as well as many others!

Designed and developed in cooperation with Uwe Eickert, the original designer of Conflict of Heroes, and Western Civlization Software, the award-winning computer wargame studio, no effort has been spared to bring the outstanding Conflict of Heroes gameplay to the computer. Conflict of Heroes includes an AI opponent as well as full multiplayer support with an integrated forum and game lobby. To remain true to the core gameplay of the board game, the PC version is designed to be fun, fast and easy to play, though hard to master. The game design is also historically accurate and teaches and rewards platoon and company-level combined arms tactics without overwhelming the player with rules.

How will you play

Post by PirateJock »

I can't set up a poll - maybe haven't got enough posts - but I was wondering what game view people think they will use to play CoH?

My first reaction is that I'd be going with the top down 2D counter view. This might be because I've got and enjoy the look of the boardgame. Of course that might all change once I see the pretty 3D chrome, but gut reaction is 2D for me.

2D counters and 3D map. The 3D units look very poor compared to the counters.

Agreed! The 3D terrain looks good from the screen in another thread with the 2d counters, though I am biased and have an affinity for counters stretching back to the 70's.

Reading through Angelo's AAR [&o] still reckon 2D counter top down will be what I use (see last screenie). Good clear view of what's happening ... who needs this fancy 3D ... it'll never catch on!

I initially thought 2D map and counters, but I like the look of the counter 'chits' on the 3D map that Angelo had in his AAR. Maybe I'll have to wait and decide after I've had a chance to look closer. But that 2D map and counters keeps calling to me.

I'm not a veteran of counter pushing. Closest for me was Axis and Allies and that uses plastic pieces. I always thought that Steel Panthers would be good with 3D. I will probably use 3D units and map if this game appeals to me.

There really is no 2D map. It's just the 3D map viewed from directly above. I rarely use the direct view from above because it does not look as natural as it does when viewed from a normal boardgame angle. That is when you are sitting in a chair and looking at the board on the table. Those of you making comments that the 2D map mode would be your preferred mode because of your preference for a real board game look is I believe made in error because you may have the misconception that the 2D map is an exact replica of the board games. It is not. Only the board games chits are present here. In any case, I myself vastly prefer playing with the chits over the 3D models. The chits have very high quality art which I see no reason not to use. So 2D chits and 3D board, which is saying I play with the board slanted at an angle which is how it naturally looks when I play on the table.

The counters that CoH uses are not your old school chits from the 70's. Those old counters with the nato symbols on them are crap and I agree with all those that have an aversion to them. However, what Academy Games did for their board games counters made me a convert. These puppies have high quality images on them instead of a generic x for infantry and oval for tanks. To me anyway the PC version looks it best when these are used over the 3D models. The 3D models do not have as much detail to them as these counters do. I would rather see a high res 2D picture of a tank, than a low res 3D model of a tank.

Picture is of a counter from the actual board game.

it would be cool if the counters could display different situations with a unit. like the tank image you put up. it would nice if the image of the tank who damage and immobilized and the then possibly show it with a wreck image. maybe the same with infantry.

Yes that is what I would have done. Another idea I would have loved to see in the PC version would have been fully modifiable counters. Not only would the picture change to show damage as you suggested, but the fire power values would also auto change right on the counter due to any modifiers on it. All the stats would be dynamic like that had this been my brainchild.

I'd have thought the values would auto change on the counters in game?

The counter pic stays static. There is a window popup at lower left, as you have already seen in posted screen shots, that shows changes in stats.
