Kates

Post by Uncivil Engineer »

Five days into my first PBEM and first time playing the Japanese with any seriousness, I've come to discover that there are no Kates, nor engines for them, in production in Japan. How can that be? Where did the one's on the KB come from? Is this an oversight in the initial setup, or have I missed something?

Ah.. the absence of kates.. yamamoto was asking the same thing.

you see..

there was a company called nakajima
who had an engineer called matsumara
who used an engine called mamoru
for a torpedo plane called tenzan

and none of those 4 things were very good [;)]

so in 1941 the IJN had stopped production of kates, hoping to build jills
.. then once the jills didn't work they went back to kates... and .. later back to jills

http://lemairesoft.sytes.net:1945/weben ... html#18170

finally in april 1942 they built 5 kates.. [8|] and they wanted to win the war?

In actual English, the Japs had stopped production of the Kate to build Jills. They found out that there were so many problems with the latter than they had to restart production of the former, and this took time.

T - This is reason why I will read your posts - your remarkable ability to recall the most fascinating facts in regards to the pacific war in general and all things naval in particular.

Babes doesn't do anything by accident (especially when one considers the sheer amount of historical knowledge available within the Babes Team); I knew that there had to be a (darned good) reason for a zero (0) production Kate factory.

Commander - I am also very appreciative of your explanation and link.

Thank you, Gents!

Thanks, all three of you, for the info. I guess that's what happens when politicians start a war and the admirals and generals aren't ready.
In my little game I've started to correct the problem and hope to have Kates pouring out of the factories at the rate of 6 per month by the end of January.
And I was worried about the attrition rates of Betty's and Nells. Guess I need to watch the Kates, too.

well the good news is you can use the 99 hikari engines to build the B5N1
- use those Ha-35 Sakae for A6M2.. you need lots of them

True enough. Although, in the case of Japan, the politicians who drove her into war were the Admirals and Generals.

There's a lesson in there, somewhere.

and those admirals and generals were technically at war with one another...

the war was sort of a parallel agreement.. "we won't fight each other directly..we'll
just raid and pillage some other people"

like two rival pirate gangs [;)] or vikings

IJN think they can make peace after a one main battle where KB+Long Lances+Yamato class can sink almost all what USN can bring in.
One battle like Jutland or Tsushima.
For that strategy japs have enough Kates so they can develope Jill but save industry from unnecessary right now production of Kates.
Poor nation and limited in resources/workhands.

it is dumb to stop production before a war begins.. and then panic and try to re-instate it once its too late
