Argh! I ordered the CVEs out but another one got nailed on the way. I did opine before that the historic use of CVEs, ASW, just leads to sunk CVEs. And so it has come to pass. There are two ASW TFs on patrol and the CVEs, so a pretty significant ASW force.

On the plus side they did get results, I see bomb hit after bomb hit messages, plus the efforts of the ASW TFs have been pretty solid. I think they might have even accounted for a dozen or so submarines potentially in their support of the Babeldaob operations.

And of course nothing even more valuable, like one of the many BBs that support the invasions, has been hit. But I dunno. CVEs are still CVs, losing them hurts. Even if I got 3 more just arrived at Rabaul...

Looks like a withdrawal is going on in Sumatra/Malaysia... though Singapore still has a large number of troops.

Not many Japanese on this map... I think most of these targets are semi-defended. Sorong is defended by I would guess a couple of brigades. Ambon is quite heavily defended but I have a lot allocated for it, and Ambon has been completely cut off now for months.

Talaud is a bit of a mystery but it hasn't been developed so I assume a light garrison - I /hope/, as there isnt much Allied force prepared for it.

Ternate would be nice to have as well but I've only just started preparation for it, so it's not going to happen very soon. That'll be a sort of mopping up.

I got plenty of forces prepping for the Philippines right now so I want to get settled in there ASAP. I think Ternate can wait, the PI has the priority. With that in Allied hands Japans back is to the wall...

And not too much further off we will be invading the Philippines...

This is the current state of Allied preparation. I'm assuming that we only really need prep points for the landings, and that once a base is taken we can reinforce. So the troops destined ultimately for Legaspi may well be fighting on Mindanao first, while still prepping for Legaspi. There are also a number of other units, ie the ones prepping for Ambon, Ternate and Talaud Island, and just invaded Boela, which probably adds four or five divisions or so to the OOB. So it is something of a minimum.

As the PI is out of recon range I got no idea what is lying in wait up there. It won't be too long (3 weeks tops) before that changes though.

I think the Philippines is going to be the main story of the latter half of '44.

It's been a while since the last sub update too, I think I actually missed my plans of a monthly update a bit. Anyway, the past month's sub report.

The Allies lost four submarines in the last month (Bashaw, Harder, Trigger, Gato).

...the vast majority of them in the waters off the Home Islands, and the vast majority now in 2 x SS wolfpacks.

I see plenty of ASW activity, on sea and in the air (as the combat reports attest) so I don't think my opponent is being a wuss or anything when it comes to the sub war, indeed, you can see quite a few Japanese ASW ships being sunk by subs so they are clearly in contact!

Japanese subs have been much more active than usual, still, their tally for the month is 1 CVE and 1 AGC in the Babeldaob fighting and 1 xAK in the deep ocean between Hawaii and the USA. Only one confirmed Japanese submarine has been sunk in that time but I think the actual tally is far higher, more of the order of half a dozen or so, maybe even more.

This page loaded in a flash. It was page 11 that was the download nightmare. The images are actully sized quite small so I don't really have any clue what was causing page 11 to hang.

Quiet turn. The invasion force is just off Sabang though, so that'll happen tomorrow most likely. Invasion forces are also destined for Sorong at the NW tip of PNG (just passing Manus now) and Ambon (loading up at Townsville) so stuff is going on behind the scenes.

The escorts are still patrolling around Babeldaob but the big ships are all out of there now. CVE Petrof Bay actually made it out of the danger zone on 76 flotation damage, she'll probably be out for 1944 though I would've thought when you include sailing time as she limps to a shipyard, probably Pearl.

Chindits are approaching but its not even a full brigade, so I thought lets pull out all the stops and unchain the attack bombers for some low level softening up. I assumed Taiping had no serious AAA, and so it came to pass. Soft targets like this are what attack bombers are for! Devastating, by the time the paras arrive they'll be dead, and Taiping is on the Malaysian road network. Soon as I have that, the heavy hitter divisions will be railed in and it won't be too long before we're sieging Singapore.

I put everything into reserve mode except the tanks this turn. Sure enough, the tanks take no damage at all unlike squishy infantry. Beforehand I had everything but the division in reserve to shield them from bombardment, nice idea but I shoulda put the armour first. I'll bear that in mind in future.

The Allies are quite badly bruised, the division has taken about 40% disablements now. So we're going to win but the division will be out of the line for quite some time, and the support units need a bit of rest too.

8 Superforts shot down, so an Allied loss. Only Superforts are in range of Singapore but one squadron of Tonies can keep them at bay comfortably. I need an airbase in Malaya (or Sumatra), problem is that the only safe way to get reinforcement engineers in is to land at Victoria Point, march a hex to the rail line and then rail in - this takes a fair bit of time, especially as Victoria Point is not a big port.

Bad day for the Allies. A fast BB squadron is sitting with the British CVs and CVes 9 hexes from Singapore - their speed is 8 hexes. I order them in, full speed, direct/absolute orders. The CVs approach slightly closer, so by daybreak the battleships should be a goodly way from Singapore and be under air cover, at least partially.

What actually happens is, they move 8 hexes to Singapore in the night phase and then sit on their arse in the day phase, and promptly get hammered. I was not a happy bunny, those ships should be able to move 16 hexes minus a bit for combat ops issues before the airstrikes begin, instead they move 8 and get slaughtered. James Somerville will report to the officers mess for summary debagging.

It's really the same old crap you get with fast transport, the movement routine is so borked at times that you take your life into your hands every time you do it, when moron commanders decide its a good idea to sail in little circles 40 miles from a huge airbase until the sun comes up.

My own foolishness for using expensive BBs in this way when cruisers would probably (not, see May 18th [:)]) be adequate.

This is the former Richelieu/Renown SAG. As their moron commander Somerville left them one hex from Singapore, and as shipping is still evident in Singapore, I sent them in. After all, one hex away, nothing could go wrong.

Oh no!!! They found a scary tanker! No doubt crewed by super samurai! RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!

I mean seriously, wtf. If you give a task to Allied warships assume the game will make the Three Stooges screw up in just about every way imaginable.

The only plus is as that as they only had to cover 1 hex to get to Singers they were at least gone by daybreak.

In a day or two we shall see that the IJN suffers from no such incompetence.
