Parusski.
Thank God.
I'm glad you're back. Mrs. Warspite was standing in for you during my ego bashings and is charging me 50 lbs. or oz. or something every time she does it.
If you get a call at your home from the SFPD don't worry about it. I, er, someone must've thought you were missing.
Thank God.

Hmmm. Be careful with that. I followed one of those fogger trucks for a few miles last summer and the next thing I knew I was pulled over beneath an underpass drawing stick people with crayons on my Cherokee with a homeless man.

So you used a "homeless man" to draw with? COOL!

Okay, if Orm won't tell the story I will have to.
The Battle of Rio Ferdinand was fought in 1803. The Swedish King had secretly ordered his crack troops - the Goteborg Rifle Regiment - to South America in order to safeguard the Swedish royal family's supply of BPB. They sailed aboard the SS Malmo and landed at the port of Rio de Janeiro on the 4th April.
The 1,500-strong regiment, commanded by Colonel Bjorn Ulvaeus I, marched to the Brazilian-Peruvian border - a journey that took them 5 weeks and cost them a third of their number to whole manner of tropical diseases. Ugh.....
The remaining troops - emaciated, half-starved and well, frankly cream crackered, set up camp on the Acme BPB Farm, and awaited the enemy to show themselves. They did not have long to wait.... Over the course of the next three weeks came attack after attack from Austrians, Russians and Frenchmen.
Although the Goteburg's repulsed every attack, their numbers were depleted with each engagement. Eventually, they were down to just 450 men. One night, during an unexpected lull in the fighting, Ulvaeus, a keen guitar player, began strumming a few chords absent-mindedly. He was joined in this improvised musical interlude by a young Rifleman, named Fernando Andersson. Hailing from South Central Stockholm, in more peaceful times Andersson was a church organist. As a young man fresh from High School, he would love to while away the hours playing with his organ. So attached to it was he, that he brought it with him to South America.
Within a few minutes, a tune appeared. Then, Ulvaeus began putting words to the sound they were creating. Within a short time, a full blown song took form. I give below a copy of those lyrics - you'll have to add the music yourselves.
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight Fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar
They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally
I was so afraid Fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though we never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
Now we're old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando?
Do you still recall the fateful night we crossed the Rio Ferdinand? [:D]
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land
etc etc etc
After another month of fighting, during which they continued to defend stoutly, the Goteburg's - those that survived - were eventually withdrawn from Brazil; Ulvaeus and Andersson amongst those that were soon back in Sweden.
It was a good job too. Both Ulvaeus and Andersson had children - and their children had children etc. Two of the descendents of these two soldiers were - in the early 1970's - to form a band; a band you may have heard of - ABBA. It wasn't that Andersson and Ulvaeus that wrote Fernando - it was their distant forebears.
And so we have BPB to thank for that classic toon - not forgetting the brave riflemen of the Goteborg Rifle Regiment. [&o]

I beg your pardon? Are you suggesting that Warspite's research is ficticious?

I certainly hope not - the story of the Goteborg Rifles / the forerunners of ABBA - took me minutes of intensive research....

Yeah, we tried that whole monarch thing. It just wasn't for us.
And isn't this in the wrong thread? We've got to keep all this sensitive political stuff in the other thread.

And yet you missed the fact that Fernando was first written in Swedish by Stieg Andersson. And that it was sung by a female vocalist Anni Lyngstad. The song was about Fernando who had lost the love of his life. This bittersweet song inspired the two gentlemen to write their version of the song Fernando but their version was a story about war instead of love.ORIGINAL: warspite1

Here is a part of the original song translated to english: "The sorrow can be hard to bear, but the fact that friends let us down is something we all have to cope with". "Long live love, our best friend, Fernando. Raise your glass and propose a toast to it, to love, Fernando. Play the melody and sing a song of happiness. Long live love, Fernando".

No I didn't.....
And that it was sung by a female vocalist Anni Lyngstad.
....because no it wasn't.....
The song was about Fernando who had lost the love of his life.
....nope....
This bittersweet song inspired the two gentlemen to write their version of the song Fernando but their version was a story about war instead of love.
....wrong again.....
Here is a part of the original song translated to english:
....yes, and Ulvaeus and Andersson successfully sued Stieg Andersson for plagiarism or whatever that thing is called when musicians steal others work (allegedly) [;)]
I hope you will retract your absurd, nee Malicious, claims Orm or, or, or you will ruin the whole game of the G7YPBW. You are soiling the memory of the Gallant Colonel Ulvaeus and Rifleman Andersson [:-].
