Warships After Washington
Just finished this new book and I heartily recommend it to any Modder here. Decided this positive review better belonged here then on the main page! I found it pretty interesting the discussion on each class of warship as well as the differing design ideas. Keeping in mind no one had a clue as to where things were going in the 1920s, it was pretty fascinating to read the Cruisers, DD, SS, and CV chapters.
QUESTION: Has anyone ever drawn out or created art for the hybrid CV-CL shown in the book. Jordan described it as 3xIII 6" guns up forward with then a Flight Deck and Hangar able to hold 24 Aircraft. Pretty fascinating to see!
ANYWAY...really think it is a good addition to the shelves...

Cool. I also found a new military book e-store in the UK that takes PayPal. Yay, another money sink!

I liked how it focused just on the Treaty Fleets and how they sought to get around the limitations. No one was innocent. Many people point to the Japanese breaking the rules regarding the fiction of Standard Displacement but Jordan really demonstrated that all five sought 'creative' ways around the rules.
My Thesis was on this very topic 15 years ago and it makes me mad that I didn't pursue the Ph. D. because the book that would have come out of that would have been a lot like Warships After Washington OR On Seas Contested. Good, solid Treaty Years research and writing!

John, there's nothing to stop you from doing it now. Nobody remembers anything from 15 years ago. This is a different corpus mentos.ORIGINAL: John 3rd

I am writing a book on the relative construction practices, and principles, of contemporary British, French, and American figates, in the period 1780 to 1815. Lots of stuff in this area, including tons of principal sources. But digging deeper, most of the principal sources are lying, nationalistic, sacks of wet weasel feces. So what to do. Ok, so I'm building a set of 3 midship models of a French, British, and American frigate. Every stinking piece of wood will be cut to the exact dimensions the building plans call for. And then set them side-by-side and discuss.
I am much like you. Idiot pimples seem to have taken over the dialog. I think that is a function of the democracy of the Internet. But while 50,000 idiots can skew a discussion, they cannot skew a truth. In this bizarre world of Shannon Daughtery spewing her television vomit as history, I think a few more righteous works are indicated. I encourage you, very strongly, to continue with your work and publish it; even though it might have to be privately published.
Believe me, It will be noticed (and in places you wouldn't expect). Ciao. John

I am going to get it, thanks John. On a side note, while looking for it I saw a book about the channel dash. Now that was an amazing, bold operation that I think anybody should read about.

Do it. About a dozen years ago I considered going for the D.Min... but my dearly espoused told me there was another 'D' Word I would need to remember before we went through THAT again. If you have the time and the support, even though my degree is in a different discipline, I can tell you that I am amazed by the depth of knowledge on this board - not the least of which is what you have shown in this scenario mod. There have been a dozen or so of you that make me feel like a bumbling weekender in history.

I would love to and will soon have the potential means to do so. however, there is an 8-year old and 6-year old pair of boys who tend to eat Dad's time up these days.
Funny with what was mentioned above. I was accepted for my Ph. D. in Military History at Kansas State 13 years ago but my wife said she didn't want to leave Colorado. I honored that wish and said no to the degree and my dreams of going all the way only to lose the wife a year later...
Isn't that how things go??? [:@]

There is a lesson there somewhere. After I retired from the navy I had the opportunity to get my merchant marine license, but the charms of a woman kept me on shore.....

One of the creative ways around that comes to mind was the Flight Deck Cruiser...IE the one with 9 x 6" guns up front and all carrier in the back.
Would be an interesting read for sure.

I would LOVE to see someone create the Art for the Flight Deck Cruiser. Pretty COOL looking. Built to carry 24 planes, fast--cruiser hull, and 3xIII 6" guns with 8xI 5" AA.

Cool but doesn't match the drawing in the book of 2 3 guns turrets and then a 3rd superimposed over the other two all up front. The Flightdeck covers the the back 2/3 of the vessel.

Good grief! What scale? Whose scantlings? Where do I place my advance order?
