1/14/42 Turns out my secret weapon in Singapore is pregnant and refused to attack. For the past few days all Japanese CVs in the Pacific area have disappeared. Lots of radio traffic at Truk detected but no reports from my search planes. Will send out recon mission tomorrow. Meanwhile, I await the IJN's next move with bated breath.

1/17/42 Chinese really taking it on the chin. Casualties becoming alarming. Intelligence believed 2 CVs at Truk, 2 CVs at Nagoya, 2 CVs at Tokyo. Radio silence now though. Presume Japanese forces are on the move. Some intelligence that invasion forces headed to Rabaul. Will serve them crumpets and tea, of course. The Americans there were insisting on coffee and bagels, but they were outvoted. Billiton has put out the red carpet and hopes to provide further entertainment to the Nihon.

1/20/42 What appears to be 4 CVs have materialized just south of Wake and attacked. I lost a freighter that was attempting to unload supplies there. There are one or two CVL/CVEs in the Bismark Sea. Zuiho and Hosho are north of Batavia. The Dutch sent bombers to attack them but with no result. It seems there are 2 CVs unaccounted for. Unusual radio traffic is reported at Hiroshima, perhaps they are there? What are 4 CVs doing at Wake anyway, are they covering a landing force? It is perhaps brave of him to divide his forces in this way, we shall see if there is a price to pay.

1/22/42 After a good drubbing by Kirishima and Hiei, Japanese troops landed and immediately recaptured Wake and the remains of the defenders surrendered. C'est La Guerre. I am sure they will be treated well, they'll probably be used as divers to clean barnacles off the bottom of ships. For every 10 lbs. of barnacles they will get 1 oz. of rice. As the majority of the troops in the two units (a USMC reg. and USA cmbt E reg.) never had time to unload at Wake (they were all on xAPs and xAKs) they will be rebuilt.
Japanese ground assaults at Loyang and Manilla were repulsed with the Japanese suffering heavy casualties.
Secretary Stimson will be investigating this debacle and what will be done about it.

Lucky no bomb hits with allied losses, my loses negligible.

1/29/42 Japanese invade Bouganville, capture Shortlands. Only had an Inf bn. and an Arm reg. there, lost all the tanks. It seems that the Japanese may have decided against invading at Rabaul, looks like they're building a major base at Kavieng. The back and forth there should be interesting later on. Suffered horrible defeat at Loyang. What are the Japanese trying to do? Take over China? Who'd have thought? Some time ago spotted a battle fleet headed in the direction of Ceylon. Some sort of raid perhaps? Getting regular reports of enemy ships off the West Coast and around the Hawaiian Islands, I know I can give the search plane crews more training, but which button do I push to give them eye exams? Who knows what they'll be seeing next?

2/1/42 Things are pretty quiet just now. Apart from Ryujo and Taiyo hanging around Batavia, and a CVL/CVE or two near Bouganville, haven't heard or seen any CVs for over a week. Americans giving Aussies some education on real BBQ and experiencing what the Aussies call "beer" and "ale". Getting terrific head splitting hangovers, Aussies know nothing about filtering out the histamines. One day perhaps. Really idyllic otherwise, except ...

Perhaps vontiger's search plane crews are as bad as mine.- My Search planes continue to tell me they have spotted something.... my own fleets!!! my favorite was they saw tankers and said they were carriers!! So glasses all round.

2/11/42 Yes, they did put a torpedo in the Langley, which I should have been using to train carrier pilots, shouldn't I? [:-] I fear this will not be my last dumbass mistake. A couple of CAs are hanging around Rabaul, don't know what they're up to. Rabaul was bombarded a couple days ago by two BBs (Ise and Hiei if I recall correctly). There has appeared a convoy just north of Kavieng, could be an invasion force I suppose or just a delivery to Kavieng. Another convoy which must be an invasion force has appeared entering the Coral Sea near Milne Bay, I suppose it may be headed for Port Moresby though it does not seem very large and I see no bombarding TF nearby. Well, if they come, my troops know what to do about it.
