It's not ideal - but I can live with it.

Singkawang is already secured and should be a level 4 airbase with 72 aviation support in the next day or two.

I am currently busy with an interesting sortie from that base...we'll see how it has panned out once I get the turn back. [:D]

Cagayan is also already secured, but needs extensive repairs to the airbase and runway. Jolo will be secured soon.

Ambon, Kendari and Balikpapan are out of the scope at the moment. Manado should be secured in the next five days.

10 DECEMBER 1941:

INITIAL MOVEMENTS:

I-164 sees the Dutch sub K.18 travelling on the surface at night near Ketapang, but her two torpedoes miss. The minefield a sub of mine lay between Borneo and the island of Tawi Tawi must have paid off since my opponent sends six AMs to sweep it. I rectified my heavy force from Cagayan by stripping out the DDs that were low on ammo and this pays off - they set DD Alden and DD John D. Edwards on fire during an encounter with four US DDs, and sink TK Manatawny, xAP Elcano and xAK Ravnaas near Tawi Tawi on their way south.

The interesting thing here is that my opponent committed CL Marblehead and all the US destroyers that started at Balikpapan and Tarakan to the Sulu Sea as opposed to running for Java.

A four-DD surface group of mine then runs into the same US destroyer group - end result is all four are damaged (with three on fire), and presumed to be heading for Tarakan. The same four-DD surface group then runs into xAK Governor Wright, the sole survivor of the US freighter group that my cruiser force ran through earlier, and sinks her. To end their night, my DD SAG runs into the US AMs sweeping off Tawi Tawi and causes consternation, sinking AM Tanager, AM Lark, PG Asheville and PG Tulsa, and damaging various others. A Dutch sub then tries to torpedo DD Natsushio unsuccessfully, while the other three DDs then sinks a light freighter and damages another. They try to engage another light freighter but near Tapul but can't close.

DD Kuroshio, DD Natsushio, DD Hayashio and DD Amatsukaze have the following scorecard for the night of 9/10 December 1941 (in rain with maximum visibility varying between 2,000 and 6,000 yards):

My minelaying sub off of Luzon sinks a light freighter near Lubang. The Dutch sub K.13 tries to attack a convoy near Soc Trang and is heavily punished by ASW, with six hits claimed (the Dutch sub is also later claimed as sunk).

Dawn breaks, and after my successful devastation of his sweeper force near Tawi Tawi, he sends another sweeper force consisting of DD Peary and AVD Childs. These two ships were part of the larger force that left Manila trying to exit the Sulu Sea via Balabac but then diverted southwards and appear to be trying to run for Tarakan or Balikpapan. I imagine he is trying to run the bulk of this force (including support ships like AS Otus, AS Holland and AS Canopus) via the gap between Tawi Tawi and Borneo shortly.

In clear conditions my light surface group covering Vigan runs into eight MTBs off Luzon - these British MTBs were sent from Hong Kong. Only two remain floating.

PHILIPPINES

Iba is swept again, but is clear. We again bomb Clark Field, destroying a P-40B and a P-35A and damaging some other aircraft. It is becoming clear from recon that my opponent is setting up his Luzon defensive position at Clark Field, with over 50,000 troops spotted there. Hopefully the heavy airfield damage has prevented high levels of fortifications being built and is sucking up high levels of supply.

For now I am content to sit at Aparri and Vigan building up those airfields to at least size 4 to sustain a long-term siege Clark Field/Bataan.

Kimura Detachment lands at Legaspi in south Luzon.

Cagayan's runway is taking a long time to repair.

MANILA

We conduct another ground bombing run on Commonwealth ground troops at Alor Star, trying to disrupt them and prevent them moving to the south. I have a 450 AV force - including 25th Army HQ - about two or three days away from cutting off Alor Star from Georgetown and Taiping. Here's hoping! If they get there in time, more than 200 Commonwealth AV will be prevented from heading south and will be engaged by the Imperial Guards Division and two tank regiments from Singora.

Kota Bharu's runway is almost repaired and in two days time I'll have more than 100 aviation support there.

We bombard Hong Kong with very little result.

11 DECEMBER 1941:

INITIAL MOVEMENTS:

An Ehime-class xAK returning from Singkawang is sunk by a Dutch sub.

I have sent a fully-armed cruiser force (CA Maya, CA Ashigara, CL Kuma and 4x DDs) to make a run south through the Sulu Sea and into the Celebes Sea to try to run into escaping US warships. They first run into and sink three light freighters, then they encounter CL Marblehead and five US DDs.

CL Marblehead is hit eight times - a number of hits were critical, with some apparently carrying off upperworks and causing severe casualties to damage control parties - and set on fire. I'm pretty sure she's a cripple. DD Bulmer and DD Parrott are also set on fire. They later also sink a yard oiler.

Even though CA Maya is set on fire, the damage is not as great as reported and by dawn all fires are put out. She has 23 Sys and 17 Flo damage.

My highly successful sub lurking at Tawi Tawi sinks a small tanker.

My opponent has around nine submarines (sighted) in the waters around Formosa. My aircraft are reporting around twenty or so contacts per hex! Seven ASW attacks are conducted by my surface forces in the area, with no hits reported.

Much further away, Guam and Wake Island are bombarded.

When day breaks, my sharpshooter force (CL Naka with five DDs) surprises six Allied PT boats near Iba and sinks PT-41! This means my opponent now has only two MTBs and five PT-boats left (having lost six MTBs and four PT-boats).

Another Ehime-class freighter is sunk - this time near Cam Ranh Bay - by a US submarine.

One of my blocker force submarines sitting off Bandjermasin on its way into the Makassar Strait puts another torpedo into xAP Rochambeau (she was torpedoed earlier off Tawi Tawi) and sinks her.

MALAYA:

Alor Star appears to have suddenly emptied overnight - it might well be that my opponent managed to put all his forces into strategic mode and rail them south. Extensive recon will be carried out tomorrow to try to confirm his troop dispositions.

PHILIPPINES:

Iba is again clear of CAP. Clark Field is again bombed (and now I am certain that this is going to be his Alamo). Legaspi is captured.

A Kasu D carrying elements of an artillery regiment is torpedoed off of Luzon.

HONG KONG:

My first deliberate attack does not achieve 1:1 odds - but 1:2 instead. This could be a long battle of attrition, but I can afford the losses better than he can.

SOUTH PACIFIC:

Wake Island is captured!

My forces land on Guam, and will attack tomorrow.

US carrier aircraft attack two AMC raiders on their way back to Truk near Enderbury Island, and sink one (the second will sink too)...judging by their course they are heading for the Marshalls...forces have been put on alert and I have dispatched six submarines to try to lie in wait!

(I think losing CVL Ruyjo could have been a blessing in disguise - it gave my opponent some sort of comfort to try to commit Marblehead and DesDiv 5 to the Sulu Sea. I have Mavis's at Cagayan now able to search almost the entire length of the Makassar Strait. Clear skies are forecast for tomorrow - I have two submarines blocking off the Makassar Strait between Bandjermasin and Madjene - and a 5x DD force has refueled and re-armed at Babeldaob and are sprinting at full spead into the south Celebes Sea to try to sink damaged US warships):

All in all, I'm happy with the progress thus far.
 
Aside from the stuff-up with CVL Ryujo (that damn Boise! [:@][:@][:@]), losses have been relatively light.

CVE Hosho has been converted to a dedicated ASW platform - she is carrying eighteen B4Y1 Jeans.

Yes, Jeans.

Why? Well, the Jean has an alright normal range of 6. However, being a biplane, it has great maneuverability and most importantly, even at extended range, carries two 250kg GP bombs (which will do a real number on an Allied sub). My pilots aboard currently have an average ASW skill of around 40, and are training this skill intensively.

The idea is for CVE Hosho with its eighteen ASW experts in Jeans (of which I have 61 in the pool and have to use somehow) to operate along with a very strong ASW screen (at this stage the thinking is eight of the Ch-13 Class SC's that have four depth charge racks each for a total of 32 ASW).

This dedicated ASW Air TF would then operate under the cover of usual land-based search aircraft, and move into any areas with high concentrations of Allied subs, and, hopefully, sink some subs. [:D]

I have been very impressed with my land-based Zeroes thus far.

They have a total of 56 kills, for the loss of 5 Zeroes (1 A2A, 4 Ops).

That reminds me of a story.

When the Anglo-Boer War broke out in South Africa in 1899, the British Army's High Command was very concerned about the presence of fatally venomous snakes in sub-Saharan Africa.

They therefore decided to establish a dedicated unit whose sole purpose was to capture venomous snakes for the purposes of manufacturing anti-venom.

Apparently, only seven British Army soldiers (out of a total of about 250,000 who were to serve in South Africa from 1899 to 1902) died from venomous snakebite.

Five of these were members of the snake-catching unit. [:D]

Ha! Yes. Reminds me of going to OZ with the GF during the summer and asking, "Why doesn't EVERYONE carry anti-venom with them when they go walking in the bush?"

Why don't ALL ships have ASW? And more of it? I love that some of the IJN CAs have DC racks.

People seem to not like to use Hosho as a fighting CV, but as a small addition to the Mini-KB I've found her very useful. No issues yet anyway, and 10 more each of both Kates and Zeros surely can't hurt. Plus, I'd rather have her take a fish in a TF with Ryujo and Zuiho, so if she's there it just raises the chances the others won't get hit.

12 DECEMBER 1941

INITIAL MOVEMENTS:

My light screens around Northern Luzon run into US PT-boats again, sinking one.

One of my subs torpedoes a Dutch minelayer off Java, and tries to unsuccessfully torpedo an aircraft tender. Another sub torpedoes a light freighter. Another light freighter is shelled on the surface by an I-boat.

Later during the day these same submarines sink two more light freighters in the Makassar Strait.

A heavy bombardment force shells San Fernando - 11th PA Inf Div suffers disruption.

It appears HMS Scout is alive - she is reported to have passed through the gap between Borneo and Tawi Tawi. I have a submarine in the area, maybe she'll engage tomorrow.

The Allied subs are very busy - DD Sazanami is torpedoed, and might not make it. One of my transports carrying part of a Recon Regiment is torpedoed off Laoag. Four resupply xAKLs are sunk off Formosa. A torpedo boat of mine is later sunk during daytime.

Hopefully these US subs off Formosa will soon be out of torpedoes and will have to go a long way to rearm.

PHILIPPINES

We sweep Manila - empty. No fighters up at Clark Field, either. We continue bombing the airfield there, runway damage is reported to be in the 90s. It appears from recon that Allied troops are now all moving to Bataan. I am continuing to build up Vigan and Aparri airfields.

I have a sizeable force that will land at Lingayen in a few days.

MALAYA

We conduct nuisance ground attacks. The British appear to be abandoning northern Malaya. Victoria Point is captured.

I am sending a heavy surface combat force on an interesting sortie, under cover of Zeroes, to cruise along Java and recon the bases there with her floatplanes.

HONG KONG

We conduct a bombardment attack. British assault value is down to 185. We will try a deliberate attack next turn.

PACIFIC

Guam is captured. 144th Inf Rgt will be loaded again and will depart from Truk, where it will await further assets as part of my later expansion into the South Seas.

INITIAL MOVEMENTS

One of my subs sinks a light freighter that had tried to escape from the Philippines outside Soerabaja and another US freighter is sunk in the Makassar Strait.

My heavy surface group was detached on a secret mission to intercept escaping Allied shipping coming through the Makassar Strait. [:D]

It runs into a tanker and eight freighters, and sinks them all. It later intercepts the damaged AM Bittern, and sinks that, too.

I have sighted the remainder of the ships that fled Manila - including support ships like AS Otus, Canopus - just off Makassar, my heavy surface group will make a run during nighttime to just off of Bima and then circle back, in the hopes of intercepting these.

During daytime my opponent, probably thinking I had left Singkawang unguarded, sends a British surface group (I can only assume to bombard my aircraft there). But I had in fact detached a light squadron - four destroyers.

My destroyers perform brilliantly against the British force consisting of CL Mauritius and four DDs. Mauritius is sunk, DD Isis appears to be a goner and DD Jupiter could be in trouble. In return DD Hagikaze is set ablaze - she has fire levels of 99. It's impossible to put these out and I scuttle her.

I am placing two submarines in the path of the returning damaged British destroyers.

No Allied sumarine attacks during the night, but during the day a transport is torpedoed off Vigan and a freighter is shelled off of Formosa.

PHILIPPINES

Troops come ashore at Davao. They will attack tomorrow.

Allied troops on Luzon are definitely withdrawing to Bataan.

MALAYA

Things are quiet here. Alor Star is taken, though. I have troops (550 AV) between Alor Star and Taiping. A further 500 AV is now being railed to Alor Star and will then join at Taiping once that base is taken. This is the main leg of my advance, with 25th Army HQ included. On the other side of Malaya, two infantry regiments have finally moved to within 90 miles of Temuloh. They will shock attack tomorrow, with the aid of recon and air support, the remants of the two Commonwealth brigades that were routed from Kota Bharu.

HONG KONG

A poor result for me in this deliberate attack. I lose 36 squads to his 5. I am going to rest my troops for a few days and continue bombing them with aircraft with Canton. Also, I am moving 23rd Army HQ down to try to assist the poor leadership.

Tomorrow over 60 Zeroes out of Singkawang (range 8) will sweep Singapore. Recon indicates he still has 55 Buffaloes there - hopefully they come out to play.

I will start bombing Singapore airfield soon.

In the Philippines, Kanno and Tanaka detachments are moving towards Tuguegarao. After taking that base, I will reform the 2nd Formosa Inf Rgt.

Lingayen is apparently clear - so much the better. Tomorrow the following units are landing there (500 AV):

INITIAL MOVEMENTS

A US sub is spotted twice by ASW escorts near Laoag, but avoids any damage. Another US sub is spotted in the same area by another subchaser, but gets away. A third US sub attempts to torpedo CL Kashii on its way back to Saigon from Singkawang, unsuccessfully.

A Dutch sub has more luck, however, scoring a torpedo hit on a Yusen S AK ([X(]) during the night and then following up during the day with another three torpedoes...I would have preferred losing two destroyers to a Yusen S, to be honest.

PHILIPPINES

We bomb Clark Field, again. No US fighters are up in Luzon, yet again.

Our troops land at Lingayen and Mauban. We have 15,000 troops ashore at Lingayen and 7,000 at Mauban.

We capture Davao, in addition destroying two Catalinas on the ground!

DD Sazanami - nearly sinking after an earlier torpedo hit - is finished off by a US submarine off Luzon.

MALAYA

We sweep Singapore with 56 Zeroes. A total of 26 Buffaloes is claimed shot down! [:D] I lose 5 Zeroes in return. Two infantry regiments shock attack the remnants of the Kota Bharu survivors - there is only 22 AV left. They are low in morale and supply, and we inflict severe losses on them. These two infantry regiments will continue along the railroad track towards Temuloh - which will take at least another two weeks.

560 AV has arrived on the main road between Alor Star and Taiping. At Alor Star I rail in more troops - there should soon be another 550 AV. Once Taiping is taken I will rail them in (less some troops diverted to take Georgetown). I will then conduct a general advance along the western coast road with around 40,000 combat troops towards Kuala Lumpur.

Kota Bharu and Alor Star will soon be major forward air bases supporting IJA operations in Malaya.

DUTCH EAST INDIES

We land at Manado. The thinking here is to base Zeroes, Betties and Mavis's out of here as soon as possible. I will then leapfrog from there to take Kendari, and then I will do the same thing to take Ambon, in order to effectively isolate the Dutch East Indies from Australia.

CHINA

I am having my troops in Hong Kong rest and take replacements. I will attack again soon. Elsewhere in China I'm busy moving troops into position to mop up the railroads.

INITIAL MOVEMENTS

My heavy surface combat group finally runs into the remainder of the Asiatic Fleet from Manila [:D]. If there was more moonlight, more devastation could have been wrought. This surface group is under long-range cover by Mavis search aircraft, and will double-back tomorrow trying to engage the rest of this convoy (my SAG still has on average 60% of main gun ammunition remaining).

If I can sink every single ship in this convoy, it will help to ease the pain of losing CVL Ryujo to CL Boise. [8D]

A US sub unsuccessfully torpedoes a light freighter off Formosa.

My deep-sea submarine screen of Hawaii finally detects US shipping, a sub unsuccessfully attacks a US destroyer. Another sub manages to torpedo a minelayer.

PHILIPPINES

A SNLF lands at Jolo. Lingayen and Mauban all fall. Tanaka Detachment takes Tuguegarao and will wait here for Kanno Detachment to reform 2nd Formosa Inf Rgt.

At Lingayen I will await my follow up wave (an infantry brigade and a tank regiment) before moving on Clark. Two tank regiments will race to take Cabanatuan, then Bayombang, and will then link up with 2nd Formosa Infantry Regiment to encircle the 11th PA Div at San Fernando.

My troops at Mauban will move on Batangas and will then proceed north to Manila.

MALAYA

Singapore is swept again by over fifty Zeroes. 19 Buffaloes are lost for five Zeroes. Recon indicates there are now less than 20 fighters left in Singapore. We will soon bomb Singapore's airbase with over 100 Nells and Betties.

25th Army is two days from Taiping.

The Naval Guard Unit that took Singkawang has marched overland to Sambas and forces the Base Force to surrender.

DUTCH EAST INDIES

Manado is taken. Immediate construction will begin to increase it to a level 4 airbase.

CHINA

We attack a Chinese Corps blocking the railroad between Taiyuan and Tatung, managing to hit them while they are preparing to move - inflicting heavy casualties.

My land-based A6M2 units look as follows:

Yamada Det S-1: 18 A6M2, 72 average experience, 92 morale
3rd Ku S-1: 45 A6M2, 73 average experience, 99 morale
Tainan Ku S-1: 45 A6M2, 73 average experience, 92 morale

They have claimed in total 89 enemy kills, for the loss of 16 (7 air-to-air, 9 ops), and have suffered 2 KIA, 2 WIA and 3 MIA.
