INITIAL MOVEMENTS

A Japanese sub unsuccessfully attempts to torpedo a destroyer leaving Hawaii. A US sub tries to torpedo a patrol boat off Legaspi, with no success.

A US sub is sighted off San Fernando but gets away, whereas an Allied sub off Soc Trang is depth charged - apparently three hits are scored.

CL Kinu is lucky off Cam Ranh Bay - a US torpedo fails to detonate.

MALAYA

We sweep Singapore, again - no fighters are up. 95 Nells and Betties the come in, unescorted, and drop over 50 tons of bombs on Singapore airfield. We lose two Betties to flak. I'll increase their altitude for the next bombing run.


PHILIPPINES

Clark Field is yet again bombed. I will stop the bombing soon since it's clear he's abandoning it and likely building up forts on Bataan.

Jolo is captured. The Sasebo 1st SNLF will embark for Zamboanga next.

HONG KONG

We probe with a bombardment attack. Hong Kong is down to 159 Assault Value, while my troops have recovered disruption and fatigue plus the 23rd Army HQ will be there tomorrow - when I will attack again.

17 DECEMBER 1941

INITIAL MOVEMENT

In pitch black darkness, a destroyer task force I had patrolling off Tarakan surprises CL Marblehead (with six destroyers). USS Stewart is sunk for sure, and USS Parrott and HMS Scout might be in trouble as well.

The same Japanese destroyer TF is then surprised in turn by USS Paul Jones, but manages to score two shell hits.

The last of the US Asiatic Fleet surface forces are making a run through the Makassar Strait during this period with no moonlight. I have, in addition to the five destroyer TF (who sustained almost no damaged) given orders to a heavy cruiser squadron (two CAs, a CL and five DDs) to sweep the strait at high speed tomorrow and hopefully make contact.

My heavy surface group in the Banda Sea finally makes contact with something, the hapless xAK Cape Fairweather, and sinks her.

There is a failed US sub attack off Singkawang, and another failed attempt off Formosa to torpedo a transport (thank goodness for dud torpedoes in this case).

Four more US sub attacks are unsuccessful, with three ASW attacks of mine yielding no results.

During daytime, my light forces off Iba run into patrol boats, sinking a British MTB.

MALAYA

Singapore is swept again, with no aircraft up - and another 70+ aircraft bombing run comes through, this time at 15,000 feet. We score some good hits.

PHILIPPINES

At Clark Field I am dealt a bloody nose by my opponent who decides to finally place on CAP all available remaining fighters in Luzon. The 20 Warhawks shoot down a number of Sallies, Nates and Lillies.

HONG KONG

We continue bombing the ground troops, trying to cause some disruption. Our deliberate attack is successful, and we destroy 34 Commonwealth squads.

The next deliberate attack should see fortifications reduced to 0.

OPENING MOVEMENTS


A US sub is detected off Formosa, but escapes. My destroyer task force again engages the Marblehead task force, scoring two shell hits in complete darkness before the Allied task force manages to escape. They engage this task force again later during daytime, and it shows - 22 hits are achieved, sinking HMS Scout. Hopefully USS Parrott also sinks! A US sub then tries to torpedo one of these destroyers, but without success.

My heavy surface group runs into a British freighter and sinks her.

There is another unsuccessful submarine attack off Cam Ranh Bay.

MALAYA

We sweep Singapore again, and shoot down almost twenty Buffaloes, but not enough since twelve are able to engage my bombers that come in afterwards - I lose nine in total.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong falls to a deliberate attack today. BANZAI!

10x DMS minesweepers are on their way to clear the harbour of mines.

PHILIPPINES

Bayombang is taken by two tank regiments as we encircle 11th Philippine Division at San Fernando.

CHINA

The long-anticipated attack at Ichang by 66,000 Chinese troops finally arrives, but my troops hold out - inflicting heavy casualties on the Chinese attackers.

OPENING MOVEMENTS

Light forces again run into the depleted US patrol boat fleet near Iba, scoring another hit on the last of the Mosquito Fleet. Minesweepers start sweeping Hong Kong. There are no submarine contacts today.

MALAYA

After my Betties and Nells got a bit of a bloody nose yesterday, they rest while my Zeroes from Singkawang sweep Singapore again, but the British pilots do not oblige in meeting us.

My opponent sneakily ambushes my Sallies that are bombing a British base force near Victoria Point with the AVG - I suffer 9 lost.

CHINA

We continue pushing on towards Chuhsien. At Ichang my opponent attacks again, probably thinking he might overwhelm it with my fort level having gone down to 2, but he gets a 1 to 3 and he suffers A LOT of disabled squads. I will try a bombardment tomorrow to see what his AV looks like now.

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

Hong Kong is swept clear of mines - my six BB bombardment force is sent there to rearm. We try to depth charge a US sub near Cam Ranh Bay.

A SNLF lands at Zamboanga.

The pride of the Dutch fleet, commanded by Admiral Karel Doorman, then engages my heavy surface group that has been returning from the Banda Sea via the Makassar Strait. I imagine my opponent was hoping that this task force would be low on ammunition. This is not the case with my CAs, who perform very well.

We sink CL Java, and set CL De Ruyter and DD Banckert on fire. Three of my destroyers are set on fire, but they soon put these fires out.

My heavy battle group then runs into a small convoy and obliterates it.

One of my Nells from Formosa claims having sunk a US sub off Formosa with a 250kg bomb. BANZAI! [:D]

MALAYA

Singapore is empty again. A Nell raid scores some more hits against the airbase there. Recon shows almost everything to be empty, I think almost all of his troops have moved to Singapore to prepare defenses.

PHILIPPINES

Our two tank regiments attack a Philippine battalion near Tuguegarao, inflicting heavy losses. 11th Philippine Division at San Fernando is now cut off from any friendly bases.

In Mindanao we push a Philippine infantry regiment out of Butuan.

CHINA

At Ichang we conduct a tiny bombardment attack. The Chinese AV has come down from about 1800 to only 1030 after their two failed attacks. Supplies have finally caught up to Ichang thanks to a big resupply convoy I unloaded at Shanghai. I will counterattack tomorrow! Let's hope it works...

An Anglo-American ASW force attacks one of my submarines outside Soerabaja, scoring two hits. She's damaged and will need to head back to Saigon for repairs.

I land at Brunei with strong engineer support. Brunei's port will be built up.

We attack the remnants of the Kota Bharu defenders outside Temuloh. We inflict serious losses, and the 1st Hyderabad Battalion surrenders. We'll enter Temuloh in about another week.

Manila is captured! Those pesky US subs now have a long distance to go to rearm and refuel.

Here is a screenshot of the situation in Luzon. When I eventually march on Clark Field from three directions, it will be with 1,000 AV and plenty of artillery.

Aparri and Vigan are being built up to level 4 airbases to sustain a potentially long-term siege.

I have over 125,000 tons of supply on Luzon (over 50,000 was captured in Manila).

In this turn I got very, very lucky...

NAVAL MOVEMENT

My four destroyer TF guarding the entrance to the Celebes Sea encounters a very strong Anglo-American surface action group - BB Prince of Wales, CA Houston, three Brit CLs, and five US and British destroyers.

Fortunately it is nighttime and there is low moonlight - and both TFs spotted each other at the same time.

My destroyers punch above their weight, and manage to escape with a single 14in hit - but it did very little damage. Both task forces break off.

I am going to concentrate heavy warships in this area again, clearly my opponent is not afraid of using his surface warships in an aggressive manner.

Off Hong Kong TB Chidori is hit by sub-launched torpedoes that fail to detonate. One of my I-boats in the Makassar Straits tries to torpedo HMS Vampire, unsuccessfully. US escorts sight one of my subs near Pearl Harbor.

MALAYA

The skies above Singapore are empty again. Another 43 tons of bombs are dropped on the airbase there. Airfield damage is reported as 15%.

I am reconstituting 5th Division at Taiping. Once Temuloh falls, 18th Division will be reconstituted there.

Naval search indicates some merchantmen trying to make a run for Java along the coast of Sumatra. I have ordered two fast destroyers (with Zero cover) to make a high-speed dash to try and intercept these before they make Batavia.

Brunei is captured. I have lots of engineers on the way - I want to build Brunei up to a level 6 port and a functional airfield as soon as possible.

PHILIPPINES

San Fernando is captured and 11th Philippine Division surrenders. This now leaves only Iba, Clark Field and Bataan in Luzon that is occupied by Allied troops.

CHINA

My second day's counter-attack gets a 1 to 2, but I manage to destroy 34 Chinese squads and disable a further 236. The butcher's bill at Ichang is now as follows for the past week:

All in all, I am very happy with the result of my defence of Ichang. Supplies are running low again now so am going to bunker back in, some units of mine suffered moderate disruption in that second counter-attack. The Chinese opposition at Ichang must be horribly disrupted.

Considering the Chinese assault of Ichang started with 1800 Chinese AV against 1000 Japanese AV, I am extremely happy with having destroyed 370 Chinese combat squads for the loss of 57 Japanese combat squads.

We capture Chuhsien. This force (15th Division and 4th Mortar Battalion led by China Expeditionary Army HQ and 13th Army HQ) will now move on Wenchow.

I have gone and looked at all the combat reports from 7 December 1941 to 22 December 1941.

Total reported Chinese losses so far have been 774 combat Squads, 319 Non-Combat squads and 27 Engineer squads destroyed - or more or less 22,000 dead Chinese.

Total reported Allied ground losses are as follows (the bulk of these suffered by Commonwealth and Chinese troops):

NAVAL MOVEMENTS

The British send three destroyers (Stronghold, Encounter, and Jupiter) to scope out Singkawang, but run into a surface combat force of mine consisting of BB Yamashiro, four CLs and four DDs. THis task force of mine had escorted a fast transport task force which took 33rd Division to Bangkok and, following unloading of the division in Thailand, I had ordered to take up station at Singkawang.

Jupiter is sunk before the British destroyers can disengage.

My decision to send a two DD raiding force running at full speed to try to intercept shipping spotted fleeing from Singapore has paid off. First they sink six motor launches, and then they sink four merchantmen, with another two highly likely to sink. BANZAI! [:D]

Our naval search indicates an Allied task force in the middle of the Celebes sea, with five destroyers. I have dispatched a five destroyer TF, full armed and fueled, from Babeldaob to try to intercept. Another task force with two CLs and 9 DDs is running south from Luzon. All merchantmen in the area have been diverted out of harm's way (hopefully).

I must say, I've been impressed with my opponent's willingness to try aggressive raids.

MALAYA

Singapore is again empty. I think I might stop the air raids on it for a while to allow my Nells and Betties some rest and recuperation.

DUTCH EAST INDIES

I land two SNLFs at Kendari, they will attack tomorrow. The base is being covered by 45 Zeroes operating out of Manado. I will try to get a Air Flotilla here as soon as possible to stage Nells in an anti-shipping role.

CHINA

Not much to report here today, except that recon indicates that the Chinese are definitely bugging out of Ichang! There are apparently just under 20,000 Chinese troops remaining. Supply has again caught up to my troops in Ichang (a large resupply convoy docked at Shanghai yesterday) and I will shock attack tomorrow, hoping to inflict some heavy losses on the retreating Chinese!

Now that most of my invasions have been carried out, let me quickly outline which units have gone where or where they are on their way:

Burma

33rd Division was dropped off at Bangkok about four days ago, and has moved up to Pisanuloke and is marching towards Rahaeng. At Rahaeng is 55th Division (less 144th Inf Rgt which is in the South Seas). Along with 15th Army HQ, these units (about 700 AV) will invade Burma along the secondary road from Rahaeng towards Moulmein.

Chiang Mai's airfield is being built up by Thai Army units to a Level 4 - it's currently about 20% on the way to a level 2.

Keeping large numbers of troops supplied in northern Thailand is already a hassle. Once Moulmein is captured, I'll hold that position while I send armoured units south along the good coastal road to capture Tavoy and Mergui before I continue a general advance on Pegu and then Rangoon.

Malaya

5th Division is at Taiping, having landed at Patani and marched across the peninsula, along with 25th Army HQ. It will now advance down the good road on the western side of the Malay peninsula towards Kuala Lumpur.

56th Division (less 146th Infantry Regiment), Imperial Guard Division, a tank regiment and some independent engineer regiments are sitting at Alor Star, packed up in strategic mode, and waiting for Kuala Lumpur to fall. They will then rail down to relieve 5th Division, who will then rest and recover for a bit.

18th Division landed at Kota Bharu, two of its three infantry regiments have been chasing the remnants of the Kota Bharu defenders along the railroad towards Temuloh. Once Temuloh is captured, the entire 18th Division will be railed there. They will then march across to join 5th Division and will assault Kuala Lumpur together.

The independent 124th Infantry Regiment will land at Kuantan in a day or two with additional supplies to sustain these four divisions' drive south.

2nd Division is at Cam Ranh Bay; it is busy prepping for Mersing and will likely land there around New Years' Day, and will then cut the Malay peninsula one hex to the west and then advance southeast to capture Johore Bharu.

The eventual assault on Singapore will be conducted by the following forces:

That's more or less 2,100 AV. The tank regiments in Malaya will not be used in the assault on Singapore, but will rather be rested and will prep for Sumatra.

The Philippines

14th Army HQ on Luzon is preparing the assault on Clark Field. Present during this attack will be:

That is, more or less 1,000 AV.

On Mindanao I currently hold Zamboanga, Cagayan, Butuan and Davao. I have 33rd Infantry Regiment and 146th Infantry Regiment proceeding on a line of advance along the main road from Davao-Cotabato-Cagayan. They are planning for Malaybalay (as is 16th Army HQ which is still on Babeldaob and will be transported to Mindanao shortly along with a tank regiment).

The SNLF that captured Cagayan and then Butuan will shortly capture Surigao. Two more SNLFs will cpature Oroqiueta and Dumanquilas, and then capture any remaining coastal bases in Mindanao thereafter.

The assault on the stronghold at Malaybalay will eventually involve the following units:

146th Infantry Regiment
7th Tank Regiment

That is, about 300 AV.

Cagayan, after being captured on 8/9 December 1941, still has runway damage of 24% and airfield service damage of 54%. In DBB-C it takes a long time to repair stuff.

Southern Area

38th Division is almost back to 100% TOE at Hong Kong and is planning for the invasion of Sumatra (they will go ashore at Oosthaven).

4th Division at Nagasaki is planning for Port Moresby, but we will only start this campaign once I can focus the majority of my assets there (i.e. the Dutch East Indies must be pretty much sealed off and the majority of ABDA surface assets in the area destroyed).

Dutch East Indies

Two SNLFs should capture Kendari tomorrow. 23rd Air Flotilla HQ will then be moved there to operate as a Nell base. Two SNLFs will invade Ambon before New Years Day, and the 21st Air Flotilla HQ will then be moved there from Manado.

Any invasion of Java will only take place once that island has been well and truly isolated.
 
On the northern end, this implies capturing Singapore (to provide an excellent port for refueling and rearmament and resupply) first as well as most of south Sumatra (at the very least, the axis Oosthaven-Praboem.-Palembang).
 
On the southern end, Kendari and Ambon need to be captured and the airbases fully operational with torpedo-armed Betties and Nells to prevent any movement in the Banda Sea.

NAVAL MOVEMENT

Nothing to report - not even a single sub attack or ASW contact. One of my Betties from Formosa reports hitting a US sub with a 250kg bomb - will have to see about that one.

MALAYA

We bomb Penang Fort (Georgetown); later during the day 41st Infantry Regiment captures the base, with only 3rd SSVF Bn managing to escape to the west. They will soon be destroyed as well.

124th Infantry Regiment lands at Kuantan without hindrance - 4,000 troops are ashore. I think the Allies only have a base force there (only 200 troops spotted), so he must have pulled back the Indian brigade that was there to the inland. We will shock attack tomorrow!

THE PHILIPPINES

33rd and 146th Infantry Regiments take Digos on Mindanao. They will now advance to Cotabato.

On Luzon, 65th Brigade will advance to capture Iba. Clark Field will then be attacked from four directions later (Iba, Lingayen, Cabanatuan and Manila).

DUTCH EAST INDIES

Two SNLFs land at Kendari. They achieve a 2 to 1, the base will fall tomorrow, Christmas Day.

A Naval Guard Unit inflicts more pain on the remnants of the Manado garrison.

CHINA

Now the fun bit [:D][:D][:D]. As stated previously, recon indicated that my opponent was abandoning Ichang. Only three Chinese units were left - so, filled with fresh supplies, I ordered the Ichang corps to launch a shock attack.

It was brutally one-sided - we destroy a total of 405 retreating Chinese squads, as well as 50 (out of 71) guns. The 39th, 45th and 68th Chinese Corps cannot be looking too good at the moment.

Ichang could be a major turning point in the early war in China. I have inflicted extremely heavy losses on the Chinese there.

In less than a week, the Battle of Ichang (18-24 December) has resulted in a decisive Japanese victory:

The Chinese have had more than 1,000 combat squads destroyed in a 19-day period.

Does anyone know what the Chinese combat squad replacement rate is?

Should be 350 per month.

About 700 per month when the 43 sqd comes on line before the 41 sqd finishes. Never enough.

One thing I've really noticed is the importance of preparation.

Forcing myself to have a minimum of 25 planning points for IJA units invading bases in the Dutch East Indies (most of my SNLFs are at that level or close to it anyway, e.g. 2nd Kure SNLF on its way to land at Dumanquilas has 26 prep for that base, Sasebo 2nd SNLF on its way to land at Oroquieta has 36 prep etc.) has really cut down on disruption and casualties.
