edit I meant allied units

What went wrong (partly) here was massive bombing rands effects on the Hong Kong and HK Volunteer Defense Corps
unit - which starts at AV = 66 (with some elements disabled) - here it was reduced to 0 - and was apparently
in bad shape. Kumoan rifles were also at zero - and other units a tiny fraction of their full strength. Probably the combination
of lots of infantry, ample support with the Army HQ, and lots of artillery - after the air strikes - did the trick.

I suppose the only saving grace for the battle was that the aircraft used to bomb HK were not being used elsewhere.

The chinese junks loaded about half of all the HK units and moved upriver on turn2.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Turn 8 - lots of action

Post by el cid again »

Big Red is traveling - so it may be a couple days before he sees this - but here is the
combat report.

As a German officer said late in WWII - "the enemy is retreating faster than we can
advance" - in Luzon and Malaya - and parts of China as well. We are forced to take
time to sort out units jumbled in the landing process. On balance, I am glad we didn't
land in the teeth of enemy opposition - and are marching in with main forces. It is
very Japanese, but also casualty efficient. As an experiment I landed one unit at KB -
and it got cut up - as I expected.

The chinese junks loaded about half of all the HK units and moved upriver on turn2.

I just discovered this from watching the screen this turn - no wonder HK was so quick to fall!

It was supposed to pacify an unoccupied village
and a corps showed up

But it was a kind of unintended trap
by the time his attack could have come home, two more units were present,
and the corps had already taken casualties from air strikes.

Since the HK attack force is now free - lots of troops are headed this way -
so if the corps hangs out - it will probably cease to exist. It might be better
off if it defends from the rougher terrain just one hex away from this town.

Note the AV of 4 is misleading. Its nominal AV = 0 - like the Middlesex MG battalion at HK in the
image above. I just converted the UK MG units to AV = 3. This so they can attack - not just defend.
These units have many weapons that do not count for AV purposes - but DO get used in combat.

KB vanished

Post by bigred »

The KB and the Iboat recon has vanished from the map. His search lights (float nav search) have been turned off. The game inside the game.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Slaughter at Sea! Victory Everywhere!

Post by el cid again »

Someone took a chance.
A major TF of ships either attempted to relieve PH
or attempted to escape from it. Never mind the force
was known to be in those waters. Bad idea -
like the historical sailing of Force Z. Similar outcome.

Device changes take immediate effect, so Ghost Submarine
attacks no longer produce "ship's side penetrated" messages,
but rather instead "torpedoes failed to detonate"
which is more logical. Hopefully other improvements are filtering
in as well.

We are having trouble finding the enemy on land - by the time
we get there he has abandoned the place. Alor Star was taken
by a recon regiment!

Post by el cid again »

Following up, his "corps" did a shock attack on the now three small battalions in
the hex - one proper infantry battalion, one specialist auto-weapons battalion, and
one supporting mortar battalion. Never mind - he didn't listen - and the odds were
1:7 against him - and he took 10:1 casualties! He was low on supplies, low on
morale, and had nothing in particular going for him. There is more to the combat
value of a unit than AV numbers: you must look at total devices - and also at
the "soft" factors - leadership, supply, morale, etc. Units with a low AV count are
in particular very effective in the defense. Their other useful role is supporting
an attack by other units. All their devices with effect ratings too small to permit
AV counts or artillery bombardment DO work - in combat - at close range.

The KB and the Iboat recon has vanished from the map. His search lights (float nav search) have been turned off. The game inside the game.

Actually - not. I simply reversed course - hoping he thought I was going to chase those scattered formations headed to California - tiny ones with a couple of ships each. And it paid off - we ambushed a major convoy of 16 ships. No less than 15 were hit on the first wave - 4 reported sunk outright. A group of 27 Kates that got separated or took off late then saw all that black smoke and knew where to go - found 9 more targets - and reported 4 more sinkings. Every other target was reported with heavy fires and major damage. The only ship to escape in the initial raid was sunk outright. Only the DD in escort MIGHT survive - they are in deep water.

But it is indeed the game within the game. Try to read his mind, and not be predictable.

HIS surprise was to put Aussie cruisers at Kavieng. I bet he does not know what is lurking over the horizon. Stay tuned... (I never bluff)

It is amazing to me how all these 5star old guard matrix players make a big deal out of sinking a allied supply convoy....ElCid probably used all his torpedoes on this one...

Oh, ich sehe wir haben Interesse von einem echten Deutschen bereit, AE Geschichte zu machen. Kommen Sie jetzt Historiker wissen wir, Sie wollen uns helfen.

FYI in RHS we have a number of German units - many from an unpublished mod by Mifune - otherwise imported from WITP RHS. These include die Erste Monsons submarines, raiders, tenders (one of which was sunk in this game already by a US submarine), and rather efficient transports (useful for moving "ores" - resources - from the mainland to Japan. A few units start on the map in Japan and Manchukuo. The rest appear in the SW map corner at a tiny island which is not developable - and should not be developed by either side nor captured by the Allies. This island - a dot location without art - is almost invisible and NOT a supply source nor a developed base in any sense. It is a point for Axis units to appear - period. But it is real! It is Amsterdam Island, a volano with no suitable place for a port or airfield - and the only attempt to do something there economically (raise cattle) failed.
How is the lack of building costs for german units reflected? Did you use my duration-method?

I took no special action - and am not familiar with your suggestion (or possibly I forgot it if made long ago). Tell me about it.

I do not regard it as a problem - the bigger ships start the game = no building cost.

Only one small raider appears after game start - otherwise purely submarines - and not even big submarines by Japanese standards (although,
to be sure, they are pretty big by German ones - most are Type IXs). The cost of less than 20 medium size and small (type VIIF I think) subs isn't a big strain on the economy of Japan.

The cost of less than 20 medium size and small (type VIIF I think) subs isn't a big strain on the economy of Japan.
give them durability of 1 to reflect the (almost) 0 building cost and let it upgrade to its real dur afterwards.
Without any doubt: I am the spawn of evil - and the Bavarian Beer Monster (BBM)!

I do not like to waste torpedoes - a real Japanese trait - they are limited in number when far at sea - so I set Kates to "using bombs"
vs ships that will either sink at once or burn out - i.e. merchants. And in port - they drop 800 kg - which I prefer to a torpedo even.

As for bombing altitude - the lower - the more accurate - as IRL. Most raids are set at 5000 feet - game default - a good standard. Sometimes I use 6000 feet, sometimes 4000 feet. Note I wrote the devices in RHS so I know the effective altitude of MG and LAA. MG work up to about 3200 feet - so 4000 feet is above them. They are bad because there are numbers of them. And many merchant ships only have MG for AAA at this stage of the war. [Stock has too many heavier AA guns on merchants in general, and at start in particular.] I am willing to take AA losses - but I try to stay out of the nasty zone with MG

Then there is the matter of doctrine. Skip bombing isn't invented yet - I consider it "cheating" to bomb at really low altitude - where the code gives you a bonus that is probably related to skip bombing. So I stay at what is technically medium altitude - the place where medium AAA is designed for. Until a player actually gets some medium AAA - there is this nice gap with little AAA opposition - too low for HAA - to high for LAA

Woops..no torps in that attack...

[;)]I do wonder if Sid set his kates at 4000ft?
