2/12/42 An attack was mounted against the Japanese carrier force near Port Moresby and 12 out of 13 Banshees penetrated the IJN CAP and targeted the Shokaku and the Shoho. Perhaps this raised a bead of sweat on vontiger's brow. However, they scored no hits and two of them were lost (one to the Zeroes) and eleven P-40s were lost in the process. No Zeroes were reported downed. Turns out the TF observed just north of Kavieng was headed there and it is now reported that it includes some troop ships. They are really building up this base as though they have written off capturing Rabaul. Hmmmm. Additionally, the TF observed passing from the Solomon Sea into the Coral Sea has instead begun unloading at Milne Bay. I must say that this is something I would do, but perhaps not before neutralizing Rabaul. This point can be argued credibly from either side. In any case, we have now planted a spy within the IJN high command, and we will soon know all their plans.

Sweeped Port Moresby 2 Zeros for 4 P40E. Allied attack on my carrier fleet- 1 Banshee and 11 P40 for 0. However my pilots clamied more I suspect that it cost 15-20 P40E. Claims for the day were 35 P40E shot down I suspect it is a little lower around 20-25 P40E. I was pretty happy to see no hits, I thought one of the carriers was going to get it.

2/26/42 For anyone having difficulty keeping track, Shortlands fell a month ago or so, Torokina soon after. He holds all the ports from Hollandia to Finschafen. He also holds Manus, Kavieng and Milne Bay. Nearly all of Burma was evacuated and he has occupied most of it. The Chinese are in retreat nearly everywhere. He has captured Palembang. Soerbaja and Batavia and a couple other places are holding out on Java. Manila and Bataan continue to hold out, along with Singapore.

Two days ago a large carrier fleet appeared east of the Santa Cruz islands. It appears it may include all 6 CVs, but I don't trust my search crews to that level of detail. Today they arrived to the west of Fiji and bombed Suva with about 150 bombers (Vals and Kates). Besides that I wonder what he's up to. A raid I suppose.

3/1/42 The CV group (I'm pretty sure it's all 6 of them, estimates of 300 - 360 planes or so) just bombed Noumea and seems to be drifting towards Brisbane, I guess. Another carrier group has just arrived in the Bismark Sea and appears headed to the Solomon Sea. Estimates are that it has about 180 aircraft. I'm also almost certain there's a couple of light jobs hovering around Java. Geez, what's a doofus like me supposed to do to win this thing?

3/2/42 Bataan has indeed fallen. I had failed weeks ago to provide it with sufficient supplies to hold out longer. His CVs are drifting closer to Brisbane. They don't seem to have anything important to do. I haven't spotted any oilers around and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have any with him. Must be getting low by now. Sydney is preparing as best she can for a possible raid, that would be a nuisance.
Overall there seems to be a definite lowering of the tempo, and a lack of urgency as if time were on his side and not mine. The pace of bombing attacks has slowed as well, he was bombing everything everywhere relentlessly, giving my ESC hitting finger a real workout. I now have a carpal of steel. Perhaps he is just soothing my heart with a monotonous languor.

3/5/42 Yes, the IJN has spotted a carrier force near Sydney. Submarine based float planes did it, and a radio transmission of some sort was intercepted.

A carrier force under my command was quite near when his CVs showed up east of the Santa Cruz Islands. They mirrored the IJN movements for over a week, just beyond reach. Throughout, if both groups had headed directly at each other they would've been right on top of each other at daybreak. This of course never happened, but when the IJN Carrier Group was off of Brisbane, the distance between the two forces was at one point only 520 nautical miles. A massive carrier battle was always possible (he would have lost of course) but due to his sheer cowardice it was not to be. My carrier force stands ready, whether he attacks with 6 CVs or 16. It is all the same to them, they will prevail no matter what. It is disappointing that we face such a fraidey cat in charge of the Japanese.
