Note that in RHS the Allies have transport planes - and can fly to Baguio - a developed
airfield (and location of the future Philippine Military academy, under construction: classes
are for the time being held at Teacher Camp, which later was used as the POW camp for
US citizens by the Japanese). I suppose I should put in the garrison of Fort John Hay -
the Marine Legation in China has survived in this test - and it is much smaller.

Not sure I can fly enough troops to Baguio before the Japs arrive in force, along w/ other reasons not to commit.

It is MOUNTAINS. Little old ladies with broomsticks can defend em.

The only way the Japanese can get there first is to fly in - and that means lightly armed airborne.

I think I will add Fort John Hay - which actually packed up and formed a "column" that came in on the flank
of the Japanese at Boang - at the end of the Naguilian Road - by Linguyan Gulf. A controversial commander
was dubbed "the colonel who ran away because he determined his small, lightly armed force had no business
taking on the tank supported, artillery heavy forces which had already secured Highway 1 from Vigan to
Linguyan City. I think he did the right thing - retreating into central Luzon - where they remained effective
and a thorn in the side.

I did promise to see what could be done about HMS Canberra when she raided Kavieng.
Here you go. Unfortunately Adelade was no longer with her.

I admit ElCid is no Tokyo Rose. Canberra went down w/out causing any damage to the enemy.

Not quite no damage, Oboro is in some danger - and had to go to port to control flooding. Then it will
have to steam to Truk to repair damage. 8 inch shells are not nice from the point of view of an
unarmored destroyer! But big Japanese DD s do take damage better than little ones of any nation.

Four to one odds is not fair by any standard. And the Four also had 24" oxygen torpedoes - which
acounted for both ships sunk.

They turned Phu-ket Island into party central and then told the Austrailians about it.

This turn is more like turn one, so many different actions are included

and yes, we "found" the Allied carriers - or rather they decided to come out
and play - and found some of our ships

Time will tell if that was wise or as foolish as HMAS Australia et al attacking Sorong?

In international law,
a condition of sovereignty is that you must defend a territory.

The evacuation of Alor Star district means UK has relenquished
its claim to NW Malaya. This area was formerly Thai, taken in the
20th century by typical imperial means. [Imperialism with a

It is most of all the story of one leader, his policy, his fall from power -
and his RETURN to power as national leader! He is the ONLY successful
facist leader of all time - with the possible exception of Artentina's

Plaek Pibulsonggram was Field Marshal of the Thai Army and was Prime Minister of Thailand from 1938 until 1944. The Pibulsonggram regime embarked upon a course of economic nationalism and anti-Chinese policies. In 1940, he decided to invade Indo-China in hostilities known as the French-Thai War. In 1941, he allied Thailand with Japan and allowed it to use the country for the invasions of Burma and Malaya. When Japanese defeat was imminent, he was pressured to resign in 1944.

So Japan will return the "lost provinces" to Thailand [which in
fact it did IRL as well.]
What did the allies do to Thailand as punishment for joining the allies after the war?
They turned Phu-ket Island into party central and then told the Austrailians about it.

This is a very brief telling of a story long and complicated. To fully comprehend it, one
must be Thai, and grasp Thai history.

Lets start with "Thailand" - fitting as it was a name taken (vice Siam) at the institation of its
nationalistic leader of the era. Thailand means "free" in Thai and "land" in ENGLISH! There
are many oddities of that sort - Thailand shamelessly borrows ideas from the great power of
the area of the time. [They buy CHINESE warships today - maybe that says something about
the shifting winds???? If you are Thai, you would say "yep, he gets it."]

It is most of all the history of one man, a leader similar in many ways to the great fascist leaders
of Western countries, with the notable exception that, if he fell from power - he was able to return!

Pibun was nicknamed because no one, not even a Thai, could handle his name. The item correctly
reflects many aspects of his regime, including a campaign re foreigners in general and Chinese in
particular similar to the Nazi one re foreigners and Jews in particular. He built up the military, of
course, and it remains a pretorian guard, with regular coups when they don't like the course of
events. There is a lot to know, and therefor to say, so be sure to follow up if you are interested.
But it is ANYTHING but a one sided tale of evil - it is much more interesting than that.

First of all, Thailand is the ONLY nation in Asia never ruled by a colonial power, a fact which all Thai
are very proud of. Second, Thailand (as Siam) had been pushed around by European colonial powers
for more than a century - and had lost multiple provinces to Britain (as stated, in Malaya) and to
France (the real cause of the 1940 war - to recover them). The Malay case has, as mitigator for the
Brits, that the people involved were NOT Thai, and preferred not to be ruled by the Thai. The case
in Cambodia (mainly) is rather more awkward for Thai bashers - the French had no reasonable claim,
the people were substantially Thai and/or content with Thai rule - and if "justice" were done probably
Thailand would have continued to rule them [THEY would have been better off - no "killing fields" a
generation later for example, in which almost every person with an education died]

Second, it is anything but clear Pibun was really interested in Axis politics writ large, however much
a nationalist and even racist he may have been. [In that period people in the Commonwealth, and the
USA, were far more nationalist and racist than is normal today - a matter conveniently forgotten when
talking about Japanese "aggression" - even in China. Japan was taking over colonial priviliges from other
colonial powers, not inventing something new.] But I digress. Anyway - Pibun DID try to ally with
the Allies - asking Churchill for guarantees of Thai territory. This is reported in different ways - most of them
apologetic for the Brits - but if you can believe Churchill himself, and I do, UK could NOT guarantee the
safety and territory of Thailand in 1941, and was honest about it. So Pibun was tossed to the wolves,
as it were - left to fend for himself - with the overwhelming national priority being not to be ruled by
any foreign power. In the history below, Pibun is regarded as as successful as possible in the circumstances,
which is why he was able to return to power in the 1950s.

Thailand hedged its bets - which is SOP in Thai political culture. In effect, it had its cake, and ate it too -
appearing to join Japan - but in a legal technical sense - it didn't! Yes - Pibun concluded a deal - and even
signed a deal 21 days into the Pacific War. And the deal was approved by the state council, whatever it
is called. Sort of. The technicality is there was no quarum present, and as you may know, without a quarum
no legal business can be done. This was used as an excuse to say Thailand had not formally made the deal,
in 1945!

There is more. Different Thai in exile - military leaders - members of the royal family - set up opposition groups in
UK and the US - from the get go. AND the Thai military itself formed a resistence group - with the commander of
the Navy in command. [In RHS he commands the Free Thai Army - because he did!] They were about to stage a
coup in Bangkok, using police and underground and some military assets when the war ended. More than that,
they betrayed the Japanese effectively, flying agents in and out of the country on RTAF aircraft, and staging a
military takeover that stunned the Japanese in 1945. The Japanese commander said "when a wife is unfaithful,
her husband is the last to know." It is not quite clear WHICH side Thailand was actually on?

The fate of Pibun himself was, in very brief, that he was deposed in a kind of political coup, as much because
the winds were changing direction and Thailand needed to overtly change sides as anything else. How much
of this was deal is unclear - and Thai politics is NEVER EVER clear - there is USUALLY more going on at the top
than one can prove - one only suspects. He was eventually arrested for war crimes - because war crimes tribunals
have NO authority IF a nation police's its own (to this day). He was also tried and convicted and sentenced as well.
He appealed to the Thai Supreme Court - an institution modeled on the USA. [Thai politicians have admired the
US since King Monkot offered President Lincoln elephants to help with the US Civil War! Thai Marines were the
palace guard originally, and their name in Thai is as close as one can get to saying Marine in English.] That court
overturned his conviction - cleverly citing the US Constitution!! Not that it holds sway in Thailand, but it holds sway
HERE and we were the great power. [The Thai do their homework] It cited the provision of the Bill of Rights against
an ex post facto law: Pibun "broke laws" that were not yet the law at the time he broke them! So he was free -
and technically not a war criminal - having evaded Allied tribunals - but a civilian.

In a later time of crisis - Thailand has them every few years - he stepped up and was elected PM once again -
by Parliment of course - which is the vote that matters.

Many aspects of his regime survive to this day. Most visible of these is the very name of the country, which
he changed, and which no one has seriously considered changing back.

Now as to its post war fate - Thailand suffered under the illusion it could keep the new provinces - not only in Indochina and Malaya -
to which it had real claims - but also in Burma - where it had NO historical claims whatever. It was told, privately, that the mobilized
Allied forces in area would take em - if it didn't hand em over. So it did. And that was that. WE allied with Pibun, and when I was
in Viet Nam - Thailand was the only nation to send division sized forces to help us. [ROC offered - but was rejected for policical
reasons - there being a secret deal between LBJ and Mao - but I digress again. Don't get me started on history - or you may be
here all night!]

This complex history is represented in RHS. RHS in WITP days was the first mod to put in Thai troops. If that is SOP today,
the Thai Navy and air force are not - so we had to reinvent them for AE. Note the map is complex - the situation in Thailand and
Indochina is complex - and anything but unified in an economic and political sense. So there are ALLIED hexes that must change hands
before the area becomes a functional Japanese ruled place, delivering up its resources to Bangkog and Saigon for loading on ships
bound for Japan (in RHS one must think economically - the economy matters).

We also have the mobilized Thai Sixth Division, supported by Provincial Police and several (high school age) military academies that turned
to - and fought the landings (and less well known - you need to read this in Thai - they resisted BRITISH incursions - apparently
Operation Matador was attempted but rebuffed) - until ORDERED to stop by Pibun. HE let em do it because it established claims of sovereignty
which is required when invaded - or you don't own the land in international law. Also there is the one squadron of RTAF fighters far enough
South to matter - that really fought - but just on turn one. [Its losses IRL are deducted from RTAF when it reappears 21 days later on,
as an Axis air force.] ALL the Thai armed forces "change sides" once again in June, 1944 - then Pibun is deposed. The units simply
disappear from the map. But BEFORE that, Free Thai Army units - and even an air unit - appear - and they do not disappear. These are small
units, to be sure - and one is meant to represent a number of different irregular activities - but all are historical - and even have their wartime
leadership.

Yes, many actions. With the KB operating east of Hawaii a free hand has been given the allied TFs to operated into IJ controlled areas. And yes, it is a time to kill transports.

Last turn Naval search reported APs just north of Mili. Closest surface TF was the 3 mice, which where ordered to Mili at full speed from Singawick across the north side of Borneo. I never knew ElCid sent 2 large surface cover forces into the area which started killing the manila escape ships. I was in fear for the DDs as they encountered the BB TF. And then I thought maybe they will survive as they outran the BB TF(w/o damage!!) which is displayed in the report.

Note that in RHS the Allies have transport planes - and can fly to Baguio - a developed
airfield (and location of the future Philippine Military academy, under construction: classes
are for the time being held at Teacher Camp, which later was used as the POW camp for
US citizens by the Japanese). I suppose I should put in the garrison of Fort John Hay -
the Marine Legation in China has survived in this test - and it is much smaller.

Not sure I can fly enough troops to Baguio before the Japs arrive in force, along w/ other reasons not to commit.

OK - just adding Baguio has not been enough for any Allied player to take the bait and use it
as Yamashita did

So I will throw in the Fort John Hay Column

of over a thousand US and Filipino troops.
I have his maps (unpublished but publically visable at the Fort John Hay Museum today).
He marched down the Naguilian Road to Buang, on the coast,
and found IJA in control from San Fernando to Linguyan City -
with combined arms infantry/artillery regimental combat teams
supported by tanks -
and wisely elected to return up the road, destroy all the heavy equipment,
and took to the mountains.
The Japanese 4th Infantry Regiment went down that road in 1942 - to take the
city - and a US/Filipino combat team went down it agin - in 1944 - with the same object -
but a rather harder time - as Yamashita resisted.

When the war ended, Yamashita was asked to surrender. But he could not, he pointed
out, by Japanese law. So we got him an order from the Emperor himself - it being easier
than forcing the issue. [Even so, Nakano School agents stayed behind - for a generation -
until the Cold War era Japanese army ordered them to surrender!! Talk about loyalty to the
thrown!]

Since your handling of the Marine Legation at Peking shows a small unit can survive even
deep behind enemy lines because you got them into
rough country - I think the larger Camp John Hay Column - with actual
heavy weapons and mountain terrain - will do well.

This a look at current TF deployments in the Hawaii area. Note the tankers in the same tf w/ the CV TF. Also note the distance to midway where 3 AOs where sunk.

Code apparently loves die rolls on reports.

The AMC have linked up with, and protect the tankers - and provide a different point for
air recon to originate from (with both longer range and higher operational % than
I permit for subs - which have problems with sea conditions - and most subs have by
now lost their Glen)

There are no tankers with the carriers - the report is false. There were two days ago -
when the KB refueled. There are no PG or APD anywhere in the area.

It is a brave commander who sends a single CV out in range of six times their number.
Brave or foolish, time will tell!
