RE: Ending an IJ wet dream - bluebook (J) vs castor troy (A)

Post by castor troy »

while I expect Hiryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku operating South of Perth, we have spotted another enemy carrier TF East of Brisbane... We have identified Akagi and Kaga operating in SOPAC earlier and so I think they are now raiding my lines near New Caledonia... same as South of Perth, they won't find anything important...

not sure what I am really facing in the Perth area, today we engage another BB TF in the area with our only available assets, which are two second class DD squadrons... amazingly enough our old destroyers get away unharmed after putting two shells into two enemy ships... what are all those ships doing here, we spotted six BB in total now, is he going to invade the area while having cancelled his Darwin operation? Am not really afraid at the moment, Perth should be able to hold against everything except a real major operation... as you can see, bluebook still uses TB in his SC TF which points towards not having enough DD escorts, not even for his BB which is rather amazing to me...

after our first squadron fought the enemy for no result, the second one manages to sink a destroyer with a torp hit but in return two Dutch DD are sunk... would have been fun to see a torp slamming into a BB but that's something only IJN DD are able to do... Van Nes blew up after a 36cm slammed through her belt...

so that's the reason halve of the IJN is sitting in the Perth area... the enemy lands here before he even attacks Darwin or Port Moresby... bluebook continues the tactic I have compared earlier with taking Moscow before you take Warsaw, Kiev or Minsk... the game let's him do it (he still has the fantasy bonus too) so game on... reminds me of that game back in WITP times when I had an opponent landing a couple of divisions near Karachi before attacking any other base in India...

WHAT THE HELL? Parallel to the invasion of Australia's West Coast the enemy also lands troops North of Brisbane!! Those carriers spotted yesterday weren't raiding, they covered an invasion force all my patrols failed to spot... talk about a nice realistic tactic, the only thing that prevents the IJ landing in the Antarctica is the map ending North of it... oh how I hate that ridicoulos amphib bonus and this PBEM clearly shows how ridicoulos it really is when the IJ player wants to play it to the edge...

at least it fully supports what we already knew, the enemy is going all out for Australia...

two divisions are coming ashore... he did not attack PM or Darwin, he goes straight towards the Perth and Brisbane area, the next major IJ bases are 1800-2000 miles away, what a realistic strategy... amphib bonus? a joke... IJ need for fuel or supplies? laughable... the whole IJN seems to be operating around Australia with probably halve a dozen IJA divisions plus support going to land...

Will you commit any LBA or real warships / carriers to try to oppose these latest invasions?  I mean, reading your AAR one would think the allies didn't actually have any LBA (other than one group of marauders) or carriers at this point, but I'm pretty sure that's actually not the case.  [:'(]  I'm sure your carriers must be off doing something important like guarding the approaches to Vancouver or S. Africa though.  (Who knows, they could be next!  [:D])

Not trying to fight when you are disadvantaged makes sense of course, but the extent to which you offer no resistance to his advances is contributing to the wanton rampage I think.  Just a little effort at Darwin had pretty good results after all.

The big ships do eat a lot of fuel, but only really badly if you make them move quickly.  He might be using cruise speed (still a decent 8 hex/day) a lot to extend their fuel life.

I don't want to take away too much but of course I will use my forces against an invasion of Australia. His advance has more to do with "I ignore any real life need to have a line of supply and take Sydney before I take Port Moresby or Darwin or Perth and I have a fantasy feature that is called amphib bonus that lets me unload as if I would have 21st century abilities". Of course, if I would have been able to sink the whole IJN in the SRA he wouldn't be able to do this but heck, who sinks the IJN in the SRA, normally you lose 9 out of 10 times so that's not an option to me.

I've used my forces when I could do some harm, the annihilation of a whole convoy of two dozen ships at Kendari with Force Z for example, but not if it is senseless. And when I look at my resistance at Singapore, it is pretty much the best I have ever seen in all the years of WITP and AE as we have resisted for weeks against a force of 3000+ av and the enemy lost combat squads worth two divs, let alone those that were disabled.

If someone wants to land 2000 miles from his next base the game lets him do so and I'm fine with, I will have the same ability to do so. I don't think it is realistic but not much you can do to change this so no critic here. As to the amphib bonus, well this is the real joke because what would take the IJN three weeks to unload at at level 1 port is now done in two days, THIS is what should be changed, no matter how long the JFB cry around that it is need to take the SRA. It isn't needed to take the SRA (it is for the AI) it is needed to do such crazy things we see here, where probably nearly a dozen divisions are going to land on Australia in March 42 and they load/unload at non existent port facilities like my divisions do at San Francisco.

But hey, this thread is called ending an IJ wet dream and this is what I intend to do. So far it looks impressing what the enemy did, but basically I can only repeat myself, he took EMPTY ground and when he tried to tangle with a place that was defended it didn't go according to his plan. We'll see how his adventure will turn out, I can asure you, even if he would succeed taking Australia, it will for sure NOT GO ACCORDING TO HIS PLANS!

With the situation as it is now in the game (ahead of the AAR) I am thinking the Darwin operation was just a feint, what speaks against this though is the fact that the transports I hit were loaded with troops. Oh and if you think it is only one group of Marauders, there were actually 6 groups and all were set to nav attack all the time, it's just the game that decides that it would be sufficient to fly only 50% at best. But you will see soon that also those Marauders will see action and they will be doing good.

A real problem for me in the coming weeks though is the bomb effect of SAP bombs in Babes. I have spoken to JWE on the issue and I was told that there is indeed the need for a change and he will look at it and while an ongoing game can be updated, the changes will be too late for me when I could really need the db correction for my defense of Australia because as it stands now, my bombs are by far not as lethal as they are supposed to be which makes it pretty twice as hard as it should be. When you see freighters take two 1000lb bombs and they just sail on you are sitting in front of your monitor like

I can asure all readers that the coming weeks will be an interesting read and I can also asure you that I am too experienced to have lost Australia already. With ignoring both Darwin and Port Moresby the enemy gained weeks (if not months) and this has quadruppled his chance to actually take the continent but the chances are at best 50:50 IMO. The coming weeks will show one major operation, if I succeed, his chances will drop to 20%, if I fail, his chances will nearly reach 100%.

Castor, I don't want to come across as critical and belittling as it seems the others who recently asked if you are intending to put up a fight seemed to do, but I was wondering why you allowed him to take so many of those useless dot hexes without putting up at least some kind of resistance that would have attrited his forces.

I kow the dot hexes are mostly worthless and the point isn't to prevent him from taking them so much as using the oppurtunities to attrite his forces. It seems most of them were surely taken out of range of IJ LBA and without carrier cover so a few judiciously placed SAGs could have done some real damage, although I recognize that it would also have attrited your surface combat force as well.

I have been hoping that you were simply conserving your force and marshalling it for a counterstrike that I'm awaiting with great anticipation. [:)]

Looking forward to seeing how you put up a fight in Australia so I can learn from it.

because all it takes to take all those dot bases in SOPAC are three SNLF or navguard units and halve a dozen xAK and even if I would have sunk those it would not attrit the enemy at all. The fact that he took all those dot bases means pretty much nothing and if you wonder where my carriers are, they have been brought into position where I wanted them to be and that took some time, so hunting a couple of xAK through SOPAC would have been a waste.

had some low value ships at Brisbane and they were target of an enemy airstrike coming from the carriers now sitting in Maryborough's base hex... four of my P-40 squadrons were at Brisbane too as I expected an airstrike against the base and the fighters tangle with the enemy strike for some good effect... mind you, these are KB's elite pilots so achieving a better than 1:1 kill rate is a success for me as his pilots can never be replaced and we down quite a couple of them today...

Does he go for all of Australia?

good question, he is currently landing North East of Brisbane (two divs plus some support), his carriers are coming from the Perth area down towards Melbourne and he has several convoys sitting West of Perth doing nothing (which is something I don't understand at all).

have sent out my destroyer squadrons that are based in the Perth area to investigate those convoys sitting West of Perth and the first TF we meet is a single heavy cruiser that is screened by four destroyers... not really a frightening force even though it should have bene enough for my destroyers but my second line DD win that encounter... I also have a RN cruiser squadron in the area and I have kept them secret so far but seeing this cover force for all those convoys sitting off Perth I have ordered the cruisers to engage, takes two days to be in striking range... when my cruisers will show up there will probably be some battlewaggons and more cruiser stuff around but who knows, we might get some good hits and I just have to react now as an invasion of Australia is surely stepping across the line I have drawn...

Day Time Surface Combat, near Perth at 41,147, Range 15,000 Yards

Allied Ships
DD Kortenaer, Shell hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Evertsen, Shell hits 1
DD Witte de With, Shell hits 1
DD Banckert, Shell hits 3, on fire

the second destroyer squadron are the Dutch and while I've thought the Brits would be whiped out by CA Myoko I expected the Dutch to outperform Murasame which shows up with E Shimushu which seems another rather strange TF for me... Murasame easily handled my four destroyers though, sinking Kortenaer and hitting the other three... Murasame should be done too though...

so if the enemy convoys stay where they are then they should encounter my RN cruisers in two turns and I have another surprise for the IJN if the situation stays as it is this turn...

damn it, enemy tank Army landing at Port Augusta, vital spot in the defense of Australia as it cuts the rail connection between Western and Eastern Australia... I've just railed in a tank unit and a mot inf bgd but I doubt they will be able to hold, especially as we now have spotted several convoys, not just the carriers and an unidentified task force! Seems like another MAJOR amphib operation is probably bringing a whole Army to Port Augusta...

anybody like to discuss the amphib bonus? [8|]

AMc Warrawee, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Thanet

I wasn't really sure what the enemy is up to, in fact I didn't expect him to land at Port Augusta, nor did we spot that big number of convoys going all the way around Perth down to Port Augusta and I thought some ships could go to Adelaide so I've sent two destroyers to disrupt things a little... there was also an AMc at the base for mine sweeping duties if needed, all three vessels are attacked by a strike launched by Hiryu and Zuikaku which is met by four P-40 squadrons that did really well but there weren't enough of them to wreck havoc even though we downed quite a number of carrier aircraft again, hopefully this will pay off at some point... Thracian won't make it and Warrawee was sunk, Thanet retreats South...

this invasion of Port Augusta can prove to be a real danger for us, excellent move while it would be all five times harder without the amphib bonus but I am tired complaining about such a feature as it doesn't help anyway so I just have to live with it for another 17 days...

I was quite surprised by the high number of escorts, which convinces me that there are Hiryu, Zuikaku, Shokaku and at least two or three CVL as I am sure most of the Zeroes would be flying Cap and not escort... lots of Cap fighters turned back due to low fuel or ammo or whatever other defects, none of the escorts suffered from these factors... is this wad? see it all the time... that means 1/3 of your Cap turns around due to these issues while the escorts aren't... shouldn't it go for both sides?

unfortunately there was no strike in the afternoon as this could have meant a good dozen IJN losses more...

this turn's air losses, we again achieve a 2:1 A2A vs the carrier based Zeroes, not bad... am sure that more than a dozen IJN elite Zero pilots are gone forever as they were downed over my base...
