Are these West cost invasions below the line where you get the extra Aussie reinforcements or is he walking that tight rope as well?

He has quite a long supply line and two distinct separate invasion points to support. If you can keep KB engaged at one, it might be a chance to use your carriers to disrupt supply to the other. Or counter invade a key hex on his line of supply route. (Milne Bay or Rossell Island come to mind). Even if you eventually lose it, it will throw a wrench into his plans and force him to react-and no invasion bonus soon. Right now he seems to be on a very tight timetable. Anything to disrupt him might just really screw him up. And given the date, he can't have very much defending his rear areas.
I also concur in that I don't think you need to fret about him grabbing all the dot bases in the Pacific. He can't sustain them and you only need to take the ones back that suit your needs. I don't really know why he is doing it except to perhaps confuse you.

no, not yet, but he probably will take some bases on the East coast that will trigger reinforcements

I doubt he would care about Milne Bay at all, because I own PM and he doesn't care. [:D] I don't worry about the dots in the Pacific nor can I take them all back as I would have to prep my units for three months for each dot, otherwhise landing at empty dots would cause too many losses, no amphib fantasy bonus for the Allied, even if they were the ones doing real amphib operations, not the Japanese.

But hey, this thread is called ending an IJ wet dream and this is what I intend to do. So far it looks impressing what the enemy did, but basically I can only repeat myself, he took EMPTY ground and when he tried to tangle with a place that was defended it didn't go according to his plan. We'll see how his adventure will turn out, I can asure you, even if he would succeed taking Australia, it will for sure NOT GO ACCORDING TO HIS PLANS!![]()
Haha, that's the spirit! To be clear, I didn't mean anything bad by my comments - they were just me being silly mostly, although I don't think you took them wrong way. The idea of IJ amphibious landings in Antarctica was too funny, made me respond.
His logistical constraints in southern/western Australia are an interesting puzzle. Does he sail all the way back to the DEI to replenish ammo and sorties, or has he brought along nav support and auxiliaries to turn one of the small local ports into a base of operations? 5th fleet over on Fiji or New Caledonia would work too, but transiting the Tasman Sea for resupply seems like sheer craziness. I guess if he overruns Adelaide or Perth the problem goes away.
Regarding the fight with Murasame, I've often wondered if the surface combat model actually has any penalty for getting shot at more than one time in a combat round. Seems like one ship can return fire effectively to any number of attackers in a single combat round, which feels a little counterintuitive.

Adelaide?
Speaking as a mostly Japan player this is just utterly preposterous. It's game engine optimisation gone mad.

On the plus side, KB's fighters being used on escort missions into heavy P40 CAP is surely pretty much the ideal situation for you. The edge should be taken off KB fairly quickly at this rate.
As for dot hexes, if they are totally undefended you could run rampant with some paras. Sub raid on one atoll, get some transport a/c there, and then everything in range thats exposed is yours, all bloodlessly. I think paras can drop by Catalina no? so you need a sub, an AV, a para battalion and and a Catalina squadron.
Assuming you have any paras at this point in the war, and that assumes that they really are empty.
Probably a good idea to take as much as you can bloodlessly when you can, as even a baseforce there will stop that and force the slow route. It sounds like he's relying on the landing losses alone to deter rapid counterinvasion.
added: especially as his amphib bonus is about to expire so he wont simply be able to march back in at will.

When I see how many IJN ships (hundreds) operate SOUTH!!! of Australia one can not speak about any logistical constraints at all for the IJN in this game, it just does not exist, no matter what ppl are saying, this is once more a good prove for it. I am struggling in every game to have enough fuel at the frontline using EVERY available tanker and the IJN happily sails two hundred xAK/xAP covered by literally all available BB/CV/CA into positions West, East and South of Australia and we are in MARCH 42! [8|]
As to surface combat, yeah, every ship that is fired upon seems to be able to fire back at each and every enemy that shoots the ship. Counterintuitive is spot on in this regard.

Bluebook surely isn't happy about his carriers launching strikes against targets covered by Cap and he sure isn't deliberately doing so. But all in all, we haven't killed enough of KB's airwing yet.
I guess I will never care about all the dots, let alone at this stage now. The para + patrol ac idea is a good one though.

Read Greyjoy vs. Radier ...Here in Scenario #2 the IJ not only took India & China .. but sank almost the entire USN/RN including AP's .. but in '44 the Allies get so much stuff that this IJ strategy of extension failed when Greyjoy pulled off the Hokkido Hurricane .. .The game ended because the system cannot handle at least the number of platforms in scenario #2 [Allied fighter/IJ fighters and Allied bombers OOB] that were all within range on the home islands. My own evaluation of the situation is that the IJ would have been hard pressed to last unitl '46.
Such is the opporunity here is you are paitent.

Bluebook is burning lot of fuel by doing that. Early 1942 Japan have enough fuel reserves to support that kind of operations, but he must be losing fuel rapidly.
It almost seems like your opponent is not going to play this game past 1942... [&:]

Guys, I never meant to spark a discussion on the value or lack thereof for dot hexes in empty wasteland areas of the south pacific. I was only trying to point out that the forces being used to take them were likely very susceptable to attrition and possibly open to putting an outright stop to such mad island grabbing by the intervention of very little force.
Castor discounted the usefullness of going after them by stating that he did it all with an xAK and a small assault unit that wasn't worth wasting his carriers on. I agree, but a force of 2 DDs or a light SAG of a CL and a couple of DDs could just as easily have put a stop to it.
Personally, I think it's worth shutting down his expansion wherever and whenever you can. Surely he would have just loaded up another xAK with another small assault unit and went right back to his old tricks serving up another small force for the slaughter.
Just my two cents.

I know GJ and Rader's game and I don't worry about me at all, not even if he would take all of Australia, I can wait for 18 months and land anywhere I like to. But I really had to wonder how it is possible for the IJN to operate more or less the whole Navy 1800 miles away from the next bigger port.

bluebook said he wants to do better than real life and even if he would take losses (he will, I can guarantee you this) he will not give in. It's not really about having the fuel, but you also have to have it where you need it which makes me just even more shaking my head when I see where all those massive convoys are operating.

yeah, but the dots won't help nor harm me. The target is Australia and we'll have to focus on it. Letting him do what he did so far without opposition everywhere got one big reason, I don't give a lot on the areas he took. And like I've said earlier already, he might have a chance to take Australia but I can asure you, it won't go as smooth as taking empty area's in SOPAC.

this engagement pretty much confirms what we have said recently, a single ship will fire at every ship it is fired from and in the case of the Japanese, it means these ships constantly turn out as super heroes... you just have to read below's combat summary which shows that Myoko fired like wild, literally knocking out my Brit/US cruiser force... all of those hits were either penetrating or exploded in the super structure, leaving my two British heavy cruisers in a poor state... once again an IJN super hero result we see just too often but one can keep insisting this is all fine... Myoko's belt armor was strong enough to see the British 8 inch shells bouncing from longer range...
so with the way it is working, you see one cruiser putting out more shells than four cruisers together... clear IJN victory... would there have been a second IJN CA we would probably not have a single ship left... this is a daylight encounter for those that would like to bring up another argument how super hero like the IJN was in night engagements...

WOW! I just can't believe that bluebook really only covers this huge armada (there are more than just this TF in the hex) with only one heavy cruiser and not even halve a dozen destroyers... imagine if our cruiser squadron would have performed as you would expect it during a daylight engagement of a far superior force vs a totally outgunned enemy, we would probably have whiped out halve of this convoy... we sink one and heavily damage another freighter but ground losses are severe already... this is what I earlier called "not working according to plan" for the enemy... am sure this convoy is carrying at least one IJA div... and there should be another surprise for the IJN...
there wasn't a single escort for this troop convoy...
we pay with two heavy and one light cruiser in a pityful state, all three of them in worse state than Myoko... while they aren't in imminent danger of sinking another engagement with enemy cruisers would probably finish them, don't want to think about the IJN CV showing up but they are still covering the invasion at Port Augusta... mistake, BIG mistake...

I have moved my base forces out of Clark Field, those units alone used up 80% of all supply there, they are now on suicide mission... NEVER, I say NEVER have flak guns at a base under siege when you can't bring in supplies, no notable effect but those units alone will use up all your supply...

ordered my bombers from Melbourne to attack the enemy tank Army landing at Port Augusta and in good weather we do some nice damage... this attack nearly had the PBEM being abandoned as result as I was told that this turn had to be redone because I have used my B-17 at 6000ft. Now there was never a hr for 4E A2G attacks, only for nav attack below 10000ft and I replied that I would never redo that turn... I was forced into a new hr of no 4E on ground attack below 10000ft as result, otherwise my opponent would have dropped the game as he said the 4E (not even three dozen of them mind you) would kill his Army in Australia alone... [8|] funny, someone throws all realism over board doing those crazy invasions that are nothing but pure game fantasy and then insists my 4E are too powerful - this is Babeslite, bomb effect was HALVED!
at least in the end he had to admit that there was no hr I have broken but the game only continued with a new hr on 4E... that the 40 Marauders did far more damage here is for sure...
we identified leaking Cap from two enemy CV and a CVL...

in bluebook's oppinion the two dozen 4E at 6000ft were the reason this shock attack failed... the fact how totally silly the overall situation is with a tank Army being unloaded in one turn at Port Augusta, 2000 miles away from the next IJ base is of course perfectly fine... screw the silly amphib bonus...

this engagement pretty much confirms what we have said recently, a single ship will fire at every ship it is fired from and in the case of the Japanese, it means these ships constantly turn out as super heroes... you just have to read below's combat summary which shows that Myoko fired like wild, literally knocking out my Brit/US cruiser force... all of those hits were either penetrating or exploded in the super structure, leaving my two British heavy cruisers in a poor state... once again an IJN super hero result we see just too often but one can keep insisting this is all fine...

Cornwall was so heavily damaged by Myoko that she was split off the cruiser squadron and she's retiring to Perth together with DD Encounter... amazingly enough, Dorsetshire was still part of this TF, it was Boise to sink Shinonome with 6 inch shell hits...

No, but in retaking most of these bases the Allied don't need much help. Most will be weakly garrisoned if at all and when the Allied get LST, LCI, LCI and the smaller landing craft, they can pretty much throw any unprepped or lightly prepped unit ashore and the disruption will be moderate. Only real issue are atolls with a decent defense. They require a lot more preparation. A lot of players are in a hurry to recombine the gull, lark and sparrow units into their larger organic units but I find these units are prefect for this sort of mission. They all have great organic artillery support and are very strong for their size. Disruption aside, the Allies have plenty of small units available when time comes to retake some of these basses.
Like you said. It is more a nuisance than anything else.

ordered my bombers from Melbourne to attack the enemy tank Army landing at Port Augusta and in good weather we do some nice damage... this attack nearly had the PBEM being abandoned as result as I was told that this turn had to be redone because I have used my B-17 at 6000ft. Now there was never a hr for 4E A2G attacks, only for nav attack below 10000ft and I replied that I would never redo that turn... I was forced into a new hr of no 4E on ground attack below 10000ft as result, otherwise my opponent would have dropped the game as he said the 4E (not even three dozen of them mind you) would kill his Army in Australia alone... funny, someone throws all realism over board doing those crazy invasions that are nothing but pure game fantasy and then insists my 4E are too powerful - this is Babeslite, bomb effect was HALVED!
at least in the end he had to admit that there was no hr I have broken but the game only continued with a new hr on 4E... that the 40 Marauders did far more damage here is for sure...
I'm a long time lurker on the forums and greatly enjoy your AARs but really have to comment on this: I find it really dissapointing that an opponent who constantly pushes the game rules to the breaking point would insist on a new HR at this point. I think it really reflects badly on Bluebook.
IMO, a bunch of tin can IJA tanks and tankettes running around Australia would have been mauled by bombers in real life so it's a bit rich to complain about it happening in the game.
Cheers,

Couldn't agree more. Your opponent appears to be the typical JFB who overexploits every over the top advantage the game designers gave to the Japanese while demanding that one of the only real threats the Allies have be nerfed by a house rule. I would recommend you look for a real man for an opponent in place of this spoiled child.

Bluebook is burning lot of fuel by doing that. Early 1942 Japan have enough fuel reserves to support that kind of operations, but he must be losing fuel rapidly.
It almost seems like your opponent is not going to play this game past 1942... [&:]
bluebook said he wants to do better than real life and even if he would take losses (he will, I can guarantee you this) he will not give in. It's not really about having the fuel, but you also have to have it where you need it which makes me just even more shaking my head when I see where all those massive convoys are operating.
We'll see about that...
He is using japanese biggest transports, those have very good range. I'll admit it's totally historical to operate ships that far south, but what I said is still valid. He has enough tankers and oilers to support that kind of operation, but that means home island is losing fuel rapidly. It takes lot of fuel to refuel battleships and carriers.

Not talking about Castor's game but in general, level bombers are way too effective vs. ground attack. In stock game allies could destroy one japanese infantry division in three days just by using level bombers. Historically it was totally impossible to destroy entire combat formation of a division just by dropping bombs at 10000 feet...
I think that was one of the reasons Babes team reduced bomb effectiveness. I sertainly hope that Babes scenarios have fixed that issue. It was not issue of 4Es, but level bombers in general.
