I have been thinking for a couple of years about getting that game, I would like some thoughts about it from the people here.

Thanks

witp without planes to speak of, without production - but with a lot of BBs!

Surely a lot of fun!

I think I might get it if you are interested in a PBEM game?

The shorter scenarios area blast with lots of surface gun action. However the long campaign just got tedious with very long waits between action. Usually, a lot of ships are sunk in the first few months of the war and then nothing for very long periods. My opponnent and I finally gave up due to boredom. I would recommend you play a short scenario.

Lots of distance to cover in the Pacific with slow ships.  If you don't stumble into one another there will be little action.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Yes get it. I played a PBEM against Terminus which eventually came to a 'terminus' on my part due to RL issues at the time.

He had playtested the game (I think) but I remember we had great fun. I also think we posted an AAR on the forum but would have to check

It's great fun on the simple basis that very few games deal with surface ship gun battles, but as tocaff and crsutton said, it has some problems with pacing. I'd also like to say it has unit stacking issues, as it's not uncommon to have several thousand troops garrisoning Wake Island. Having to dig out hexes like that repeatedly can get very tedious.

Amphibious landings are very trying affairs in WPO. I had an AAR vs the AI going for a while until I tried to take Wake. The 1st Cav Div and a USMC Rgt went right through the woodchipper.

WPO does play quickly. Once things settle down, you can have lots of turns where nothing happens. With the ranges of the ships, you tend to work in more direct paths a la Nimitz.

Badly needs to be brought to AE standard.

Plus a real plot rather than it currently has.

We'd need to get Tankerace back here...

AI is almost nonexistent in the game. I would consider it PBEM only.

Somebody please update Fighting Steel.  I had a killer strategy for the Battle of the Denmark Straits.

I was rather dissapointed with it. Almost impossible to spot enemy fleets until they arrive at a destination hex......strange combat results......lots of BBs firing 7.7mm machine guns at each other for 10 minutes in the combat phase.......and large periods of tedium inbetween. To be fair a few modders had a crack at making it more enjoyable, but I deleted it off my hard drive years ago.
