RE: Preparing for '43

Post by Crackaces »

Turns away ... we have a plan for Burma .. we bought a bdge from Ceylon and will replace the Indian 7th division's population supression duties at Bombay. Miltia can exert force just as well as trained troops in unarmed peace loving populations ...

Noumea makes a great forward base but is too close to the action to be a good staging base. I have moved my operations to a secret base elsewhere. It will take two weeks to fully have infrastructure in place. Meanwhile we are getting fully preped for a very bloody contest in '43.

In other news .. Kayemo in Burma now is a big enough base to hold Bombers ... we begin to stage our aircraft for deep opertional force projection ..

The Pennsyvania had an accident .in port while refitting . and caught 22 sys damage and 150 more days in the pen ..[:@] The Idaho made it to San Francisco and will repair its engine damage it took from 2 18" torps in our Makin invasion ... this at a much faster rate than Pearl. The California has just left on its trek to Alameda and the West Virgina is about 20 days from Los Angeles .. still afloat!! 1 sys 85 flt and 25 engine damage .. the worse has been 95 flt [X(] and it has self repaired to 73 flt twice in this journey ..

The main mission for these pre-war battleships to is absorb the punishment and escort landings ... I would much rahter have those 75's and 105's shooting at my ol' BB's than AP's ...or Vals and Kates hunting these beasts .... [;)]

More later ..

I sure hope the California can make it to SF ..[&:]

Temporary flotation repairs failing aboard BB California

The West Virgina sort of had the same course with reparing things along the way .. I can only hope for a similar fate ..but leaving the California in port to occupy precious dockyard space was a futile exercise ..

On the animation 2 Tojo's, 2 Nick's, and a Oscar for a B25 and a B24 .. runway/base damage is negligiable ... the FOW says 22 aircraft total downed with many of the Damaged Tojo's being ops losses ..I do think this raid had a "Doolittle" effect in that the bombers got through despite fighter aircraft CAP and getting an intercept.

Long range ..severe storms the long range B-24 Kwajalein Island raid has little effect ..

Be very carefull with clicking .. I looked back at the turn and I clicked one guy accidentaly into move mode .. the entire attack was worthless and the defense gets a free 42 mile teleport into even better terrain..[8|] I will have to take 10 days to surround these guys (4 miles per day to slog through the marsh ..)

Ok more later ..

Ok quiet turn .. more later ..

For 5 Sallys downed 2 Helens by flak the IJ trades 2 runway hits and a Trop IIc on the ground ... that does not count the aircraft that do not make it back home because of the long range .. The bad side of this was that the CAP was brushed aside in clear weather and 89% moonlight ...[8|]

I accidently left this attack in place .. they get some bombing practice ..

I think there are two things that have to come togeher the moon and weather . if these are not aligned with the mission then you simply fly make some noise and then take ops losses ..but if you hit an undefended overstacked airbase and sneak in on a clear moonlit night . it is beautiful ... [;)]

Two interesting messages ..

2/1st Hvy.Artillery Regiment is planning for an attack on Katherine.

If this was set this turn then the IJ have something in store. The 33rd B division is stuck at Bhamo facing 1:1 odds that will change if he starts moving . the 2/1 Hvy.Artillery Regiment is trapped being surrounded right now in Northern Oz ..

We are in a very interesting postion in Burma. To the north Bhamo has 200 AV vs IJ 450 AV unsupplied. To the East two hexes southeast of Lashio the IJ have 450 AV and south of that is another 1000 AV. In Mandalay is 2000 AV and growing. Magwe has 400 AV right now. We have About 800 AV in Swebo, anthor 1400 AV at the railhead rough jungle hex next to Mandalay. 1000 AV north of that protecting the rail/road junction. To the west is 1000 AV moving on Magwe slugging it out in the rough jungle taking another month or so ..

The 7th Indian division is 300 AV we are about to bring into the fray. It can move on Bhamo and attrite the forces there. The division can reinforce Swebo. Or it can support the move on Magwe which will take another 2 months of marching through rough jungle.

Decisions Decisions :) I am thinking more of cleaning up the mess at Bhamo....bringing enough forces that the end of '43 a clear line is drawn north/south of Mandalay ....

BURMA 26 NOV 42:

The map below shows the IJ dispositions in Burma. They are occupying the rough jungle with 400 AV, which is about enough given the stacking restrictions as rough jungle X3 defense and one cannot get the adjusted 2:1 needed to move the defenders out.

One huge mistake was to get armor committed on the East side of Swebo. These units are locked in for '43 as moving them will take months. Probably the best thing to do is pull all the armor North and engage the units at Bhamo. At least the rules state that a line from Ledo can be drawn into China and the IJ are blocking this path now.

To the West, 1200 AV are gathering to put pressure on Magwe. At the very least more forces will move up from Rangoon and forces will move from Mandalay.

I think one thing Scenario #2 does not take in account is the reaction Congress had given real life and Two-Ocean Navy Act. I feel very confident that if the IJ decided to somehow ramp up for war like scenario #2 that we would in kind have devoted a lot more toward engaging the Japaneese. One can be selective with context and the facts at hand although :)

As it is in scenario #1 and the current 60 day variation in OOB the Allies have a challange in '43. In my game here .. the challange is keeping the pressure on Burma, while developing force projection in the Marshall's and Solomon's .. so far the IJ have pulled thier Air force into positions I cannot yet get at but they can project force unopposed. I have to figure out how to change that ...

Otherwise time clicks off the clock toward Hellcats and effective torps ..[;)]

I have thought this, but I'm beginning to wonder now. The more I learn the more I wonder if it's true. Where do the forces come from? Do you pull them from the Italian invasion? From the bombing over Germany? From the North Atlantic?

In '43 all of those areas were very closely run operations. It would have been tough to get more into the Pacific, and if more did come, it might not be that much more. Even about 20 more Lightnings a month from mid-42 on would really change the picture though, so maybe it wouldn't take that much.

I would like an Allied production system, maybe linked to PPs somehow. Changing would be a one-time cost of some PPs and then you could make 20 Lightnings a month instead of 40 P-39s.

It took the S&G for Congress to wake up ..and start building the Navy. Simply it would be begining a mobilization one year ealier and one less year of WPA ;) I do not propose '44 in '43 but I would propose for example Montana platforms ... Simply the United States took an isolationist stance, which allowed for the transfer of GDP to a domestic agenda. That debate I contend would be way different in scenario #2. I cannot see the hawks in congress not going ape .... The S&G / German build out spured a 70% increase in military budget in 1940 .. the forces in scenario #2 as they built up I do propose would cause congress to rethink Roosevelts social / domestic agenda ... that is where I propose the resources would come from ..

[Interestingly we are facing the same questions in 2012 ...care for our vulnerable populations or ramp up the military for a possible conflcit in Iran ..]

I do think the Reluctant Admiral scenario is more likely to get under the radar ...

Well, after the severe losses suffered by the surface fleet at Guadacanal the Americans did find and shift a fair number of warships to the Pacific to compensate, so it did and could happen. I have no doubt that if the Japaese were pumping out 250 tojos a month and threatening Northern OZ in late 1942 that the Allies would have certainly put a lot more aircraft at the disposal of the Pacific commanders. I don't think that Europe first was an unflexible policy and success had its on way of changing things. The American early sucesses in the Pacific caused a shift in this policy and Admiral King was able to send far more force than initially planned to the Pacific theater.
