Ground Radar.. Confused

Post by KenchiSulla »

Being in a 2 year long PBEM campaign now (RL and gametime), I have seen many things change within the game and I can't really keep track anymore so forgive me if this has been asked before:

When a TF gets attacked you can get the detected by radar message and the combat report shows detection range usually between 80 -120 NM.
When a base gets attacked you can get the detected by radar message and the combat report shows detection ranges at around 40 NM (often less)

I used to see "standby" CAP join the fight (the guys on escort duty, not being the active CAP and not being on rest). Now I at most see the max % of aircraft of the unit on CAP duty fly.

Did anything change or is this a nasty little bug(ger)?

I'll check it out in my game and see if I'm getting similar results. Can't say I've noticed, but hey!, with everything going on I could easily miss something like this.

I'm seeing plenty of standby CAP joining fights over land bases. Okay, not "plenty" but it's definitely still there. Maybe your dice rolls just miss.

My guess is that due to late detection there is not enough time to intercept. This could have something to do with radar. Check your combat reports. You will probably not see detection over land base at a bigger range then lets see 43 NM. At sea it is not a problem (Detection up to 120 NM for the allies)...

Just sayin'...

Does ground radars even have as good range as ship's radars?

I think 40 NM is definitely radar detection, without radar detection range is something like 10-25 NM. Maybe 40 NM is a bit short?

I stopped thinking about this a long time ago. ..

Let us have a raid to attack point 'B' that crosses one of our airbases with radar at point 'A'. "Nothing to see here boys those bombers are heading to point 'B' so no need for us at point 'A' to get involved ..."

[8D]

And we worry about fighters intercepting around the target and radar ranges ..[:'(]

According to the manual ..(http://www.scribd.com/doc/12981393/1945 ... r_page_290, 1945) groups of planes on the horizon could be ID from 60-80 miles away with single planes varying from 20-40 miles. I think the game is fixed for air attacking landbased target at 40 miles?

But we must remind ourselves . it is a game with a very sophisticated referee system to manage PBEM ... not a simulation ..[;)]

Not that I can say. Below is a collection of detections and sightings of last turn, highly variable with a clear distinction on detection range depending on radar
guarded bases, raid size, and raid altitude.

Latest official patch, our current PBEM.
Morning Air attack on 4th RAAF Base Force, at 51,102 (Tjilatjap)
Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 108 NM, estimated altitude 20,000 feet. <-- medium bomber raid, several radars in place
Estimated time to target is 34 minutes

------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Bandoeng , at 50,100

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet. <-- large heavy bomber raid, no radar or radar ineffective
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Rabaul , at 106,125

Weather in hex: Severe storms
Raid detected at 79 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet. <-- large heavy bomber raid, medium alt, radar obviousely working
Estimated time to target is 27 minutes

------------------------------------------------------------------

Afternoon Air attack on Kavieng , at 106,122

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 19 NM, estimated altitude 41,000 feet. <-- small fighter sweep, high alt, radar working but smal a/c reduce detection range
Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

If there is a glitch I did not notice up to now. Looks plausible.

+1

I get detections at bases with radar at +80 regularly. I also get detections at bases with radar at -40 regularly. Gary's randomness is working perfectly for me. [;)]

I stand corrected, raid size seems to be key.. Radar is excellent for picking up bomber raids..

Yep and not so good for sweeps, particularly low ones.
