The author of the article makes quite a claim, "The Spitfire is arguably the most important plane in the history of aviation, playing a crucial role in world war two."

Crucial role in world war two? Sure. Most important in the history of aviation? Hmmm.
Maybe its just me but I always thought the Hurricane won the BoB [&:]

Well the Spitfire took all the glory, but the mainstay of most fighter squadrons in the BoB was the Hurricane. A good solid fighter that could take quite alot of punishment.

The Spitfire was 'this years model' so to speak in 1940, and stole the limelight from the dogged Hurricane.

The other great fighter of 1940, was of course the Me109E, an extremely deadly fighter, with high manouvreability.

Whether the Spitfire is arguably the the most important plane in the history of aviation is open to debate, I think the operative word is 'arguably',
as I would think there are at least a dozen aircraft models that fall into the category of 'the most important'.

I would have thought the most important plane in aviation history would have to be the Wrights Brothers plane, 'The Wright Flyer'

In post 27, the second aircraft ZP-U, is the often represented GREY NURSE, you can see the name forward of the cockpit.
