RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Thailand Invaded!
Seems some element of Commonwealth forces has seen fit to invade Thailand!
By the only real road connection (secondary though it is). There are technical
trail connections in RHS - over Three Pagoda's Pass (which isn't yet built into
a rail line) and in the vast jungle to the North - both overland and along the
Mekong River. But little passes these ways, and units must move slowly.
But in the middile - aimed to or from Pisanoluke - a major air base -
there is a secondary road. Recon says a unit has moved steadily along it
and is now a threat to Raeing - an advanced airfield. RTAF will see what
can be done to discourage it - in force! Fortunately, an RTA division was
moving on Raeing anyway. Not all Thai units are in good shape - Sixth Division
was beat up in the invasion of the South - and several air units ground elements
are still recovering from the political disaster and division of December -
and their associated air units have no operational planes. But here - at least -
RTAF has its best - Ki-21s, B-10 (both by other, Thai designations) -
and Ki-30s moved in from Bangkok - the best of the fighters - Hawk 75s -
were already here. These carry 100 kg bombs and have 30 mm Madsen cannons -
probably the first fighters in the world to fit cannon - even before the Zero.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Thailand Invaded!
When male customers in their mid eighties come in to my store I always ask them if they served in WW2.I interviewed Mr. Beam.
I met Mr. Jones, he was w/ the 4th US div and landed on dday.
Another man I met was in the 106th div in St. Vith. He got pissed off when I mentioned half his unit surrendered and I dont remember his name.
I met CSM Duco. He was 18 and dropped on dday and later his unit formed a new division and he dropped into germany(IIRC).
All the above are white.
Then i met Mr. Sims. Black man in his late 80s. He was on active duty w/ the army on Dec7. He served the whole war at air bases in CONUS. Interesting. He later retired an e8.

This is a multi screen view of NW Borneo. ElCid will need Singawang for a quick advance.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Mongolia & Russia Invaded!
In this turn, Japanese units probe into border locations of Mongolia and Russia,
with variable results. One cavalry unit reported air recon out of date, with
three units present vice only one - and hastily beat a retreat. Still - the location
was isolated from supply by yet another unit in its rear. Farther West, a different
cavalry unit captured an undefended location - reprisal for Moho. In the North,
inside Russia itself, a tiny unit barely qualified to attack will do the same thing
to a Siberian village. Five other cavalry or infantry formations have yet to reach
their assigned objectives - but an entire division did enter a well defended hex
on the main front of Amur Province. It is NOT set to attack - this being a demonstration.
If it doesn't work, an entire corps is en route to back it up. The location is carefully
chosen NOT to threaten any LOC or air base - so as not to be mistaken for an
offensive. It is assumed the combination of so many probes plus a main front
incursion must be reported to Moscow, and it is expected that the repeated offers to
respect the border will be given a more reasonable response within a day or so.
Note that the air strike by most of an air division shows the Japanese did not withdraw
planes from Manchukuo - which in most mods may be tempting since there is no risk.
With risk - the Japanese garrison both ground and air - because otherwise the Russians
might be tempted to take advantage of the situation.
RTAF needs training (at least it is getting it!) -
not a single casualty inflicted for an entire group
attack! But photographs show the "invasion" out
of Burma involves about 800 troops - not exactly
a lot. RTN decided to see if its river gunboats
can hit the target - and is sailing North from bases
in and around Bangkok.
In Central China, a Zero sweep at what was considered
the most efficient P-40 base turned up none at all -
but recon said it isn't an undefended river port - drat!
The comment it will take 3 corps to reduce Changsha
is wrong - because that isn't how I do it. I will cut its
LOC, one way or another. Up at Kaifeng we have almost
done that to the defenders of two cities - although recon
reports the former strong forces there were mostly
removed - had they remained - it would be only a matter
of time to reduce the larger force.
The Allies artillery bombardments more often than not are
costing THEM casualties - since they face bigger artillery
forces - and so the attacks are consuming both supplies
and squads. This in major locations as at Clark or
Changsha.
The defenders of Tacloban retreated the wrong way - into
Leyte - so they have no chance of linking up with the forces
on Cebu - which might have been better for them!
The battle of Sinkawang is moving into its second phase,
with reinforcements arriving - but paying a dear price (again) -
to the remarkable obsolete Vildebeeste - three hits on three
targets! In the air, and on the sea, Big Red shows the advantages
of an active defense. He is rarely so good on land - but here
at Sinkawang is a shining exception - he moved in reinforcements
and concentrated local units - and is successfully delaying the
takeover of the developed air base/port complex.
Air ASW is working - all it takes is assigning enough planes.
Three subs near Kwajalein all reported taking hits. As many in
other places as well. In RHS, the modified subs should not sink
from any normal single hit (except maybe a really big bomb) -
but instead will either go home or sink to cumulative damage over
time - as IRL.

with variable results.

Another s-boat gets the job done.

Submarines are the nightmare of Japan. It starts out bad enough - the US and NEI
have numbers on the board - and just gets worse over time. RN joins the show
soon, and US torpedoes get fixed in due course. Radar is added. Big Red has shown
some of the potential - but I am very pleased he didn't elect to send the sub force
at Manila deep into Japanese waters - as the Allies should do - right at the start.

And again. The fly boys should not get to confident.
![]()
More like uncoordinated. They missed their fighter escort and proceeded to target
anyway - and then didn't disengage as is supposed to happen. This is a real problem -
and it will require a creative solution. Changsha is on the river system, so subject
to bombardment from the "sea" - and to invasion as well - directly and indirectly.
We had to move in Zeros to compete - an unplanned diversion from the Southern
Area of operations.

looks like a base commander has gone renegade. May have to send in the NKVD.

It isn't unique - Japanese fighters got off the reservation early in the game. One
aspect of Active Russians is you need to carefully monitor EVERY air unit setting -
the AI thinks these are enemy planes - and will engage if they run into each other.
LRCAP is the reason Japanese fighters were here - none were sent to this hex -
I had to reset. Had I set the air defense of Mutankiang properly, this battle would not
have happened. LRCAP is a favorite SOP of mine - it generates better chances of
intercept - but not near the border of a Russia not technically at war! Bad idea.

Seems ElCid has reinforced the area w/ cap to shut down the 4 plane walrus detachment. alot of fuss for a little unit.
![]()
It is a mystery how such a small unit stays in action? The airfield is essentially destroyed. But
it is a real problem to lose ships to "depth charge" attacks - and any such threat DOES divert disproportionate
forces. Fortunately, we will capture Wenchow shortly - the approaches are taken and the units moving into
the city at last.

This is a multi screen view of NW Borneo. ElCid will need Singawang for a quick advance.
![]()
This is a good demonstration of why active defense matters. The Allies should FIGHT FOR
their bases - not abandon them. This DOES require sending every available plane and unit into
the area - as IRL - but it WILL slow down the offensive and thus limit how far it gets.

There are several factors at work here. First of all, RHS deliberately reduced the impact
of heavy shells (also bombs) vs soft targets. We use a function of the square root of size,
rather than size itself. [There is a constant; for field artillery, assumed to fire HE, it is 4,
so we multiply square root times 4] This because, once upon a time, there was a problem
nicknamed "nuclear bombardment" - especially by battleships. But if we change a value in
RHS, usually we do so by a rule that applies to all similar devices. Second, I have added
to the game a new unit that is designed to simulate the unique artillery organization only used
on Luzon. Unfortunately, a command assignment issue means it is stuck on the mainland in this
test - so we will only see it used there. This is a special artillery HQ, with Japan's best arty
commander, that provides support for the artillery. Third, the results can not be judged by
a single attack - die roles cause great variation from attack to attack. They need to be evaluated
in statistically significant numbers of attacks (that is, at least 30). SOMETIMES the artillery is too
effective, sometimes no effect at all. Since I often take locations with massive damage, I think
bombardment is working.
Note that code seems to assume an "artillery dual" occurs if the "defender" vs an artillery attack
has guns of his own. Often we see Allied artillery taking losses when IT attacks - which I assume is
counterbattery fire. And vice versa.
