I was playing Allies vs the AI in the original WitP and one of the British CVs with a single Swordfish squadron blundered in 1 hex from the Yamato. The RN TF launched two waves of stringbags. The second wave returned to the carrier without finding anything because the first wave sank it.

That was probably one of the luckiest battles I ever fought in any of the WitP family games.

Dang, Bill - that was the day you should have invested a couple hundred bucks in lottery tickets!

Lose Yamato? It's unsinkable! Nagato and Mutsu are the biggest ships, I have lost. And now I'm afraid of British cruisers in night battle.

I have 'yet' to lose Yamato as Japan. [:)]

However, as Allies, I sunk her once in June '42 when she did not get far enough away from a bombardment of Vava'u and then was still too close to Suva to get any LRCAP from Noumea. No torpedo hits, but just over 20 x 1000lb from my SBDs put her under. [:D]

Uhhh, the pain is back ! No need to remember me [8|]

Bill, IF an Iowa could have been stripped of the big rifles and extra AA added, what kind of rating would she have, game-wise?

Thanks for all the comments.

I wonder if you were the Japs - instead of Mush on wards would you have built more CV escorts or gone for the excellent CA.

Now I know why the Allies were in such a rush to develop and drop the Atom bomb on Japan.[;)]

Losing Yamato to a sub hit and magazine explosion is pretty bad but I have to say that Greyjoy sinking Rader's Yamato with PT boats was epic.

Haven't played as Japan, but in my current game Yamato was sunk by a pair of RAN CA plus screen (all RAN, RNZN or Dutch) in a night combat off the Shortlands. She took both the CAs with her, so from a strategic standpoint it was a win for Japan, but from a VP standpoint a serious win for the Allies. Plus, it has to be embarrassing to loose to a task force you outmass by over 2:1 all by yourself, and which has no gun of more than half your bore size. The IJN also lost a CL and a DD in that fight.

No one would build something that big with nothing heavier than a 5"/38, and the mounts would wind up restricting each other's fire arcs unless you made up something like a sextuple mount which wouldn't be very efficient...

Oh, fine, figure eight additional twin 5" turrets.

Probably something like that. Though it would take a lot less steel to build a few CLAAs with the same equivalent firepower.

Actually, surface combat is so juiced up in this game that I think it is worth it for the Japanese player to build them. In real life, no.
crsutton,

Are you satisfied with Yamato's ASW rating in the game?

Oops, never answered OP:

Haven't lost Yamato yet, except in a scenario.
