RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Mongolia & Russia Invaded!

Post by el cid again »

The Russian Commander Far East clearly has ordered a massive set of air strikes.
Worse - Japanese fighters flew 80 miles to object to the air strikes on their comrads on the ground WITHOUT ANY being on area CAP. [I had no idea point defense could fly so far - and it is a problem - how to you prevent fighters being sucked across the border into a fight?] The first reinforcement element of the demonstration corps has joined the lead division - an armor "regiment" - and orders to artillery and another division have not been changed - they remain in route. Similarly, orders to cut the Trans Siberian RR at multiple points stand - a demonstration that war has consequences as well as a way to isolate Amur Province if wisdom does not prevail. Let em fight without being able to import oil (and we can take the oil of Sakhalin as well) - and render their heavy industry unable to generate local supplies. A village in Siberia also fell today. The (300) raiders will now leave - just as Moho isn't occupied - no reason to occupy this place. But it shows that takeover of Japanese territory isn't going to happen without a price. This is madness - but I know of no other way to proceed - diplomacy having failed we need to show both resolve and patience that Stalin will intervene due to supreme national self interest. I will order all planes to stand down New Years Day. If it doesn't work - I am running out of cards to play in favor of peace on this front.

Re: Unwanted conflict on in East Asia

Commander, Kwangtung Army reports the Commander, Soviet Far East Command is
unwilling to respect the borders of Manchukuo. There have been several air battles
caused by Red Air Force units crossing the borders after the town of Moho mysteriously
became Soviet territory. Reprisal raids captured two towns, first one in Mongolia,
now one in Siberia, without producing any response to requests for a negotiated solution.
The raiders involved are already withdrawing from Soviet and Mongol territory, their misson
having been accomplished. Hundreds of men have died and upwards of a hundred aircraft
have been lost in many days of conflict. A larger demonstration - by a division - on the
Amur front - not on any line of communication so it cannot be mistaken for a serious invasion
of anything - also failed to produce any communication (except air and artillery bombardment).
A general stand down has been ordered - but for the last time. If there is no indication the
de facto hostilities are going to end, the Trans Siberian RR will be cut at multiple points,
and the need to actually fight a campaign will be faced. Like it or not, if combat does not stop,
we are at war. But Japan is already at war with great powers. So is the USSR. Further,
we have a treaty guaranteeing peace and border recognition until 1945. I believe it is in both
our interests not to allow yet another front to erupt into general war.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Looks more and more like real war with Russia

Post by el cid again »

The Russians put a submarine off a Koran port and torpedoed a laden (coal) transport en route to Japan. They also committed armor and air power to eject the incursion into Amur Province. It was ugly - lots of casualties. Japanese fighters continue to fly - never mind they are now GROUNDED - and in tiny numbers get slaughtered - I guess in protest to the air strikes on their ground comrads just over the border. AIr strikes came in on Sakhalin Island as well. I am at wits end - how precisely to avoid the nightmare of a war in the North? There is NO diplomatic traffic - which makes no sense whatever. Moscow barely survived an assault - and the Germans surely will have another go in 1942. It is a violation of the RHS house rules to start a war without some actual cause when Russia would not do that. I also am tired of losing airplanes and - now taking torpedoes. There had better be some diplomatic traffic today.

A "surprise" invasion of Midway was met by PT boats, which repelled it. Looks like they paid a high price - but the landing was aborted - never mind the orders. In China, one guerilla regiment was wiped out - at something like 217:1 odds - but another one, facing more than 400:1 odds, retreated. The difference is probably supply state, otherwise die rolls. The entire route from Northern Luzon to Southern Mindinao (by land and ferry) is nearly all Japanese controlled - but one enemy unit remains on Leyte - and another on Mindinao. Not sure where two of the three regiments on Mindinao got to? But only one is in sight - and there is no where they can be - so they must have left (possible if the political points were paid). Malaya is Japanese down almost to Kuala Lumpur, which appears undefended on recon photographs. The fight there will be for the South, apparently. But an extra army has entered the territory - bound for Burma - it is going to use its weight to end the campaign before embarking on ships to head North on the other side of the Penninsula.

Both the I-15 and I-16 were rearmed considerably compared to their original
design versions to give them more firepower. If you get in front of them at close
range, you have a problem. If you get behind them, they can out turn you and evade
your (only two) rifle caliber guns. The I-153 Chaika, the I-15bis "Chato" and the I-16
Type 24 ALL have 4 forward firing guns - twice the firepower of a Nate.

Nevertheless, an air tactician (actually anti-air warfare specialist) the one time I set out
to eat I-16s, I wiped out 13, for a loss of something like 1 Nate. I know how to fight
the Nate. This battle was fought against orders - EVERY fighter unit was "stood down"
and I am really surprised they flew anyway! Coming in in tiny numbers at the wrong
altitude is a receipe for disaster.

This is essentially a demonstration that code is sophisticated. Aiming at huge
transports anchored and offloading is very different from aiming at warships which
are underway, moving fast. You demonstrated this earlier in the game.

In RHS, names of units are informative for players. They also are English translations
of their formal or informal names.

Mobile = motorized
Mixed = more than one caliber
In Artillery = two different calibers of major guns
In Infantry = an artillery element is added to the infantry, and possibly also engineers
Assault Engineers = a significant number of flamethrower equipped squads - absent from most
IJA units - but generally present in full scale SNLFs as an SOP
Electric Engineers = one unit fitted with remote controlled (wire or radio) demolitin micro tanks
Pack = supported by pack trains, usually mules, sometimes bearers, or both
Draft = supported by draft animal pulled wagons and carts
Semi-Motorized = at least half the logistical support is by trucks
Artillery Mortar = heavy mortars run by the Artillery Branch vice the Infantry Branch

These rail units are absent in the simplified scenarios 102 and 104 - there are quite
a few of them - many in Central Asia - and a handful near Chita and another handful
in Amur Province. Other armored trains exist at Fort Lewis (aka Tacoma) and in
Canada - that one not yet arrived. The Japanese also have three per se, and a tiny
one armed with the Schnieder Rail Gun. This one is typical - a land combat unit as
such - but the US ones are CD units in intent. All are restricted by house rule to moving
along RR lines. All can be identified by RR or Train in their names. The one on Hawaii
is unable to move there - but is still a train so the Allies can move it by ship to a place
with RR and freedom of movement. These units are mostly absent (Russian, Japanese)
or immobile (American) in Scenarios 102 and 104, which are intended for AI use as an
option - and AI does not know house rules! The Canadian one is present and mobile because,
where it is - leaving the rail line is impractical. It is intended to defend a river from landings,
and unless moved a vast distance - can only really move along the road/rail line beside that
river.

I do not abandon troops far at sea to go glory hunting! Once, in a game about the
Falklands war, I assigned the carriers to the amphib commodore, and put my flag
on a deception TF that revealed its position by sending radio messages taunting the
enemy (nominally "warning" him to leave before we got there) every morning.
This was intended to permit estimating when we could arrive - while the phibs came
in via an unlikely route - from the Antarctic - SOONER than that pattern would justify.
The commodore, IRL a former member of the staff of Mac, said this was very unusual
for a Navy guy - to believe in protecting the troops - and in running risks of paying
costs to do so. But I was, first of all, an amphib sailor (later an anti- air warfare sailor).
I had a plan and I did not allow myself to be distracted from it. Besides - we seem to
have found the TF - although hitting it is a problem. Finally, I do not exploit data from
the AAR which I don't know as an in game commander.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Midway Falls! Reprisals in Russia!

Post by el cid again »

From: Foreign Minister, Empire of Japan

To: Foreign Minister, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Re: Proposal to End Hostilities

Presenting Problem: massive air strikes, and a submarine attack, two days ago inflicted serious casualties on Japanese aircraft, and ground units involved in a demonstration which could not be misinterpreted as an invasion, and on a large ore carrier, which sank today before it could reach port.

Limited Response: Commander, Kwangtung Army was permitted only air response, with the following options:

1) Unlimited ASW patrols (which, unfortunately, failed to find the offending submarine)

2) Attacks on the base the submarine came from, with a view to sinking other submarines there (which, unfortunately, failed to happen - but many merchant and minor vessels were hit)

3) Attacks on one of the offending air bases (which appear to have taken it down for now)

Present orders:

1) All shipping has been ordered to leave the Sea of Japan, and the sea approaches to Sakhalin Island

2) All air units are ordered to stand down

3) All land units near Amur Province, moving in to support the demonstration, have been ordered to stop moving, stand down and dig in

4) Anti-aircraft units have been ordered to the front near Amur Province to exact a price on any future air raids.

Implications: Neither side can use the Sea of Japan or the Sea of Othosk for peaceful marine logistic purposes. This is unreasonable. It dooms Soviet ports isolated from land LOC to starve. At the same time, it prevents the most efficient, direct sea route for iron ore, coal and copper between the Korea and Japan. This should be unacceptable to political authorities on both sides.

Proposal: Presumably the massive air strikes of the last two days have been noticed in Moscow. Presumably the ship losses to the Soviet Union are as unacceptable as the giant freighter loss is to Japan. Presumably the loss of aircraft to both sides is equally unacceptable to both sides. Presumably the continuation of such an expensive campaign is even more unacceptable to both sides.

On this basis, it is proposed that both sides direct military commanders to respect the international border and the non-aggression treaty between us. IF you secure approval for this proposal by Comrad Stalin, please advise and I will issue orders to Commander, Kwangtung Army.

If you do not secure such approval, if I understand the situation correctly, raiding parties will cut the Trans-Siberian RR at three points in the next few days. I will wash my hands of the matter and refer it to the Minister of War.
