Got to love the aggressiveness if not the effectiveness of submarine attacks. Akagi, now Soryu, and no hits either time. I have upgraded the commanders and are starting to get results, but I think most of that is due to better torpedos. Good luck with the submariners. John

I'm just biding my time with the submarines. At this point in 1942 it's not so much how much or what the submarines manage to torpedo or sink, it's that they're out there and your Japanese opponent knows they are. Many of my sub patrols do not intercept any Japanese ships while they're out in their patrol areas but Pillager is constantly spotting them, at least several each game turn and in constantly changing locations. Pillager may not be concerned with those subs now, but that will change come 1943 and they will spread Japanese ASW resources very thin.

South Pacific: US transport (xAK) unloading cargo in Tahiti reports spotting by unknown Japanese aircraft. The transport completed unloading of its cargo and is departing Tahiti this game turn as scheduled. At this point, it’s believed the Jap plane is likely a floatplane from a nearby submarine – occasional Jap submarine patrols are known to operate in the Tahiti sea area. While it’s considered unlikely the KB is in the Tahiti area, several minesweepers based in Tahiti have put to sea as a precaution.

Two small New Zealand xAP report a contact with Jap submarine between Auckland and Raoul Is. AAR follows.

Sub-units of US 2nd Marine Division now combined to form the divisional LCU. Units of this division had been dispatched piecemeal to the South Pacific theatre and distributed as garrisons on various islands – these elements were collected together for combining into the parent formation. Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon from British aerial recon – no Japanese ships anchored in port, 3 Jap TF’s in harbor (-1 from last report), no definitive report of aircraft (though unspecified Jap planes remain based in Rangoon), 8 Jap LCU’s.

India: Jap Ki-44-IIa Tojo fighter sweeps resumed over Ledo, daylight bombing raid on Ledo airfield. No reported damage to airfield facilities, 2 C-47 transport planes destroyed on the ground.

Remnants of Chinese 96th Infantry Division airlifted into Ledo from Chengtu. At 7% of TOE strength, the division was no longer usable in China, nor could the LCU be rebuilt with replacement elements in China due to the overall supply point situation there. The most feasible course of action being a relatively cheap (PP cost) transfer to Southeast Asia command and evacuation by air to India. 96 Division will be moved to a rear-area base in India to draw replacement elements and rebuild to full strength. Four other Chinese infantry divisions are already in India and drawing replacements, 96 Division being the fifth Chinese ground unit to do so.

Summary of Operations 11/07/42

Central Pacific: Sigint entry from 11/06 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Marcus Is. Detected status of Marcus Is shows no visible Japanese forces or activity. Available intelligence data has one Jap LCU (43 Naval Gd) known to be at Marcus Is.

Another 11/06 Sigint entry reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from an unidentified Jap submarine detected at hex location 172, 141 (due W of Christmas Is). No information available on the submarine’s movement. No Allied ships operating in the immediate vicinity of this contact.

South Pacific: No further reports of Japanese aircraft at Tahiti.

Entry in 11/06 Combat Events report indicates unknown object (not presumed to be friendly) is stuck in the harbor protection net at Auckland. Maybe we caught a Jap midget submarine? A whale? Several surface ASW and minesweeping TF’s were formed and now prowling the Auckland base hex in search of Jap mines and midget subs. Several US S-class subs due to arrive next game turn in Auckland for 10/42 ship upgrade and/or minor repairs have been temporarily diverted elsewhere – let the minesweepers and ASW do their work if Pillager had indeed laid some eggs.

Southeast Asia: Dutch submarine K-XVIII passing through the Straits of Malacca drew three separate attacks this game turn by Jap air patrols (Ki-21 Sally, Ki-30 Ann). K-XVIII received no hits from any of these attacks.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon from British aerial recon – no Japanese ships anchored in port, 3 Jap TF’s in harbor, 32 aircraft (32 fighters, no bombers), 8 Jap LCU’s.

India: Jap Ki-44-IIa Tojo fighter sweeps over Ledo, also two daylight bombing raids on Ledo airfield. Reported damage to airfield facilities – 16 airfield service, 3 runway. Three C-47 transport planes and 1 Hurricane IIa destroyed on the ground.

At this point in time, Allied air operations from Ledo airfield currently underway are being completed and the airfield wound down. One transferrable Chinese infantry division that can be evacuated to India remains in Chengtu. Transport planes based in Ledo are now picking up elements of this division from Chengtu and bringing it to Ledo – once this is done, there is no further need to retain air transport squadrons in Ledo and these will be removed. RAF fighter squadrons in Ledo will also transfer out. Unless it serves a clearly defined purpose, what there is no need to contest will not be contested, that being a waste of resources. I have engineers in Ledo, Pillager can bomb an empty airfield and it can be repaired as quickly as he can damage it.

Departure of Allied air assets from Ledo is not permanent, what air units are there have now completed the operations they came to accomplish and are being removed as there is no longer a useful purpose for them to remain. When there are new air missions to run from Ledo, the planes will return. Allied LCU’s now in Ledo will remain there, transfer of one or more additional flak LCU(s) into Ledo is being considered.

Indian Ocean: Another ship collision, Johnjohn. A fender-bender between two British TK’s in a fuel convoy bound from Abaden to Australia via Capetown. No known Japanese activity in the area of this convoy and rather unlikely there is any.

It appears at least one of the two ships involved in a collision receives significant damage much of the time. This particular collision was not terribly bad, though inconvenient as it does lay up a damaged TK for awhile once it reaches Capetown. October 17, 1943. Am proceeding with massive repair and minor upgrades on all ships. Most supply vessels have now rotated through various yards and repaired all minor damage. The big boys are nearly finished with Oct 43 upgrades. Plans are completed for a four island invasion in November. Roi-Namur, Kwajalene, Amingalaplap (sp?) and Eniwetok are the targets. Wotje is no longer required, so the troops scheduled there are being added to the Kwajalene assault. I have 7 CVs at PH along with several fast CVLs ready to support the effort. The slow battleships are still on the west coast, though most have finished rebuildiing and repairs. 8 Divisions are at PH ready to go with 1st Marine Div ready at Makin and 3rd Marine Div ready at Tarawa as the reserve.

Once the Marshalls are secure, the object is to move west to Truk and then to the Marianas. Am not in a hurry. Have found that it is better to wait for the logistical tail to catch up.

McA is working his way up the coast to Madang. SWPAC is ready to move from Brisbane. I don't expect serious trouble from the Enemy on NG, but anything is possible.

Intelligence is mulling the lack of offensive operations across the board by the enemy. Either the supply situation has become urgent or the AI is up to something. I rather think the former is most likely.

Have found that it is better to wait for the logistical tail to catch up.

I strongly suspect things move at the speed of your logistical tail, whether you would like to move at that pace or not.

I have an extensive amount of intelligence on Pillager's Jap LCU deployments and locations which includes virtually the entire Japanese OOB. This should provide a fairly good picture of what he is and is not defending. The dividend from maintaining the spreadsheet of Jap LCU's will allow me an easily obtained list of Japanese units (of all types) that are located in practically any Japanese-controlled base on the map with a fairly high degree of accuracy. Basically I will know most if not all of what's waiting ashore for my invasion before a single ship leaves the harbor. This intelligence data will play no small part in determining the route(s) of US offensive advances in the Pacific theatres. Pillager can't cover everything, only a matter of what he doesn't or can't defend adequately. My opinion being that Pillager will very heavily occupy the major objectives and key routes into them. I will likely take what he gives me initially then gradually pry open his Japanese strongpoints.

I'm still not holding much of a chance that China will hold out, but it's going to be longer than I thought and longer than Pillager wants it to take. The one advantage I do have with the Chinese at this point (if anything) is that nearly all the Chinese forces are compressed into a fairly small area - concept of interior lines. Pillager is trying to approach Chungking from various directions and as long as I can keep a sufficient Chinese force in front of each attack to stop or seriously delay it, the fall of China continues to drag out. The Chinese supply situation is going to make a fall almost inevitable, though it could take a long time.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-22 (25 ships) departing Eastern US this game turn for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes one LCU (11 Marine Defense Bn), six air squadrons (two transport, four 2E bomber), 58K supply and 58K fuel.

South Pacific: A minesweeper returning to base at Tahiti reports contact with Japanese floatplane in Tahiti base hex. Likely this floatplane is operating from a Jap submarine somewhere in the area.

Sigint entry for 11/07 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Efate. Detected status of Efate shows no visible Japanese forces or activity, also no evidence of construction activity to expand port or airfield facilities at Efate. Available intelligence data has one Jap LCU (86 Naval Gd) known to be at Efate.

No reports of Japanese mines or submarines found in Auckland base hex by Allied minesweepers and surface ASW patrols dispatched in response to the 11/06 Combat Events entry indicating an unknown object was “caught in the net” at Auckland. Minesweeping and ASW patrols in Auckland base hex will continue at least one more day. Ships bound into Auckland that had been diverted last game turn will be allowed to proceed into Auckland – this diversion imposing no significant delays.

India: No Japanese air activity this game turn over Ledo. The two USAAF P-40E fighter squadrons that had been operating in Ledo are now withdrawn to Calcutta and drawing replacement aircraft and pilots.

One difficulty encountered with operating air squadrons in Ledo was delays that the squadrons had in drawing replacement planes from the pools, this despite sufficient supply points and replacement pool planes on hand, a size 7 airfield and the presence in Ledo of US Tenth Air Force HQ and three Base Force LCU’s. This difficulty does impair air operations from Ledo for more than a short period – recent experience in Ledo having “worn out” air squadrons operating in Ledo needing to transfer from Ledo to a rear-area base in order to draw replacement planes quickly without a significant delay. This particularly affected the ability to sustain fighter CAP operations over Ledo. The situation with replacement planes as much as Pillager’s Ki-44 Tojo reinforcements prompted the stopping of Allied fighter ops over Ledo – though I would have rather continued air-to-air combat over Ledo, difficulty in keeping Allied fighter squadrons fully operational at Ledo did not make sustaining this endeavor cost-effective.

Summary of Operations 11/09/42

Mainland US: US 31 Infantry Regiment was re-activated from eliminated LCU’s (this LCU starting the game in the Philippines). Cost to re-activate 31 Regiment was 15 PP and the unit will arrive at San Francisco as a reinforcement in 36 days under West Coast command. Plans are to immediately transfer the cadre of 31 Regiment from West Coast to a front-line command on re-entry to the game, then rebuild to full TOE strength with replacement elements. 31 Regiment will remain in the mainland US while drawing elements from the replacement pools.

My selection of 31 Regiment for re-activation was based on (1) nationality, (2) the fact it’s a combat LCU, (3) replacement elements for building the unit to full TOE strength are readily available, (4) it’s very likely this particular unit will become useful in future operations.

Central Pacific: Sub-units of US 24th Infantry Division combined to form divisional LCU under Pacific Ocean Areas (Central Pacific theatre) command. This action represents the initial phase of LCU build-up for US amphibious forces that will eventually operate under Central Pacific theatre.

Sigint entry for 11/08 reports heavy volume of Jap radio transmissions from Kwajalein. Detected status of Kwajalein shows no visible Japanese TF’s or other forces, though there are undetermined Jap ships and planes based in Kwajalein as expected.

Another Sigint entry for 11/08 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Tarawa. Detected status of Tarawa shows no visible Japanese forces. Evidence of construction activity on Tarawa to increase port and airfield sizes observed – current port size 3(1), airfield size 3(2). Only one Jap LCU (53 Naval Gd) is known to be on Tarawa from available intelligence data – likely at least one additional undetected Jap LCU containing engineer squads exists on Tarawa given the port and airfield construction activity reported above.

November 6, 1943. (AP) US Army troops overrun Japanese positions on Roi-Namur wiping out the defenders. Elements of the 24th Infantry Division and the 7th Infantry Divisions secured the Northern part of the Kwajalene atoll, distroying some fifty Zero fighters and thirty Betty and Sonja Bombers at the Roi-Namur airfield, the largest airfield in the atoll. At the same time McA's 43rd Infantry took Salidor on the NG coast while the 3rd Aussie Div is finishing off the remnants of the Lae defenders. The 43rd is less than 80 miles from Madang, the goal of this thrust.

Anticipated enemy carrier intervention in the Marshalls did not materialize. Seven US Navy CVs and four CVLs patrol off Roi-Namur, laying a trap for the enemy, but the enemy did not leave Truk. Darwin is now hotly contested by the enemy, but sufficient fighter units are in place inflicting significant losses on the Betty assault.

Nimitz, when asked said, "I am pleased with the results of our joint efforts in the Pacific and New Guinea. Our fighting men are doing a terrific job laying into the enemy. We still have quite a ways to go to win this war, but we are on the way to ultimate victory."

Australia: Cadre of 22 Australian Brigade (sub-unit of 8th Australian Division) re-entered the game this turn as a reinforcement after its purchase from the “dead pile” on 10/11. A command transfer of the cadre from Australia Command to SW Pacific theatre was also done this game turn (cost 26 PP) as 8 Australian Division is being formed under SW Pacific command. Total PP cost for bringing 22 Brigade cadre into the game under SW Pacific was 52 PP (includes the earlier purchase of 22 Brigade from eliminated LCU’s plus its transfer to SW Pacific command this game turn).

Building of 8th Australian Division to a full TOE strength divisional unit under SW Pacific theatre command is expected to be complete in early 1943. Remaining steps include transfer of Lark, Sparrow and Gull Bns from ADBA to SW Pacific command (this at an estimated total cost of 650 PP). Expenditure of the 650 PP to transfer the Bns and complete the build of 8th Division as a divisional unit is in the plans but this task is currently at a lower priority behind several other “projects” requiring PP expenditures.

In the meantime, 22 Australian Brigade will start drawing replacement elements and continue a build-up of 8 Division to full TOE strength. The other sub-units of 8 Division (27 Australian Brigade and the three Bns) are currently at 100% TOE strength and can no longer draw replacements. 27 Brigade is already under SW Pacific command.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon from British aerial recon – no Japanese ships anchored in port, 1 Jap TF in harbor, 38 aircraft (38 fighters, no bombers), 8 Jap LCU’s.

November 10, 1943. Kwajalene secured by 2nd USMC Div, completing invasion of Kwajalene atoll. Follow up operations to develop the bases underway. In NG the road to Mandang is wide open and McA is moving rapidly to secure it. Support operations are resupplying SWPAC. Darwin's fighters are clearing the skies. In Burma the raid on Miytkyena is going very well. Recon flights determined no, repeat, no combat troops in area. Katha taken by Chindits and entire force racing for Miytkyena. The 29th Inf Bde is moving down from Imphal to secure Katha. Looks like General Slim may make a clean sweep.

Submarine forces are sinking several ships daily. The torpedos and more aggressive commanders are making a difference. Still using the Computer assist option.

Recent intelligence confirms that both Yamato and Mushai were sunk in early '43 off Green Island during operations to secure the Island. I have FOG on, so it is gratifying to know we got them. At same time, confirmed that Hiyo, which was reported sunk, in fact escaped heavily damaged and must be in a shipyard somewhere. IJN still has four CVs available for operations. AI has shifted to a defensive game. Enemy is no longer showing any aggressive tendancies.

I'm looking forward to the improvements in US submarine warfare.

One of my PP expenditure priorities is upgrading commanders in all operational US submarines. Plans are for the change in sub commanders to coincide with the 12/42 ship upgrade (this upgrade includes virtually all US fleet subs). How this is likely to play out for each individual sub is that the sub's commander will be examined (and upgraded as needed) at the same time as the 12/42 ship upgrade is done for the sub. While there's nothing requiring me to do it in this manner, this process does allow me to "check off" each individual sub as it's done.

The total time to process all US fleet subs through the 12/42 upgrade is estimated at 1-2 months, this span of time takes into account getting all the operational US subs "cycled" through the 12/42 upgrade and commander change as they return to base from their current patrols. At this point I have about 90% of the US submarine fleet at sea at any given time, either operating in assigned patrol zones, or in transit between an assigned patrol zone and a home base.

PP expenditures for US submarine commander changes is currently the "top project" in my list for using PP - this a major reason for how the 8th Australian Division "project" is being handled.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon from British aerial recon – no Japanese ships anchored in port, 2 Jap TF in harbor (+1 from last report), 38 aircraft (38 fighters, no bombers), 8 Jap LCU’s. The new Jap TF in Rangoon appears to be a transport TF containing 4 ships (one TK, two small escorts, one unknown).

China: Japanese ground bombardment attacks continue along southern front of Chungking defenses. Latest AAR’s and situation map follow.

Three Japanese divisions arrive to reinforce attack at hex location 75,46 SE of Chungking – two of these units transferred from front N of Chungking. Chinese reinforcements are moving to this hex from central reserves in Chungking. Chinese LCU strength along the northern Chungking front is being maintained despite Pillager’s movement of Japanese units from north to south (possibility of Japanese ground assault from the north still cannot be completely dismissed).

My overall goal is to counter and repel as many of Pillager’s Japanese ground attacks toward Chungking for as long as possible – having the advantage of interior lines, a considerable Chinese central reserve in Chungking, and a relatively compact area to defend.

Summary of Operations 11/16/42

11/42 Ship Upgrades: These are almost fully completed, including BB’s Washington and North Carolina and a number of DD’s. With all ship upgrades of US fleet carriers and designated escort ships completed to a suitable level for active operations, plans are for TF’s in the US Carrier Main Force to be formed again within the next several days.

Deployment of the US Carrier Main Force is also contingent of arrival of BB Indiana and several cruisers now and shortly entering the game as reinforcements. These ships entering the game have been designated for use as escorts in US Air Combat TF’s. At this point there are no definite plans set for employment of US Carriers, though several possible actions are under consideration.

Central Pacific: US sub returning to base from patrol intercepts what appears to be a large Jap transport in mid-ocean. No indication whether the Jap transport is moving alone or if there are other ship(s). Also no information on the Jap transport’s movement, though it’s likely movement is between the Japanese Home Islands and a possible origin or destination including Marcus and Wake Islands, also the Marshalls. Sigint entry for 11/16 reports intercepted radio transmissions from an unidentified Jap TF at hex location 99, 68 ESE of Okinawa. No information on the Jap TF’s composition or movement. No US submarines are currently near the Jap TF’s location.

SS Greenling reports contact with Ki-49 Helen air patrol NE of Iwo Jima while moving to its assigned patrol area. No combat occurred.

North Pacific: Unidentified Jap submarine detected SW of Bella Bella off the Canadian west coast (hex location 202, 48). Canadian surface ASW is being dispatched to the Jap sub’s location, this contact also a “free” ASW air training opportunity for nearby Canadian air squadrons.

Central Pacific: Sub-units of US 25th Infantry Division combined to form the divisional LCU. Plans are for 25 Division to operate in the Central Pacific theatre.

Plans are underway to move from Pearl Harbor one of the two heavily damaged BB’s still in Pearl Harbor from the 12/7/41 attack to the US West Coast to complete its shipyard repair. Current damage status of the ship being moved (BB California) is system damage 48, float 66, engine 35. BB California is presently capable of movement at 5 kts – estimated transit time to San Francisco (56 hexes distance) is 28 days.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon from British aerial recon – no Japanese ships anchored in port, three Jap TF’s in harbor (+2 from last report), 44 aircraft (44 fighters, no bombers), 8 Jap LCU’s. New Jap TF’s in Rangoon include one probable transport TF (1 xAK, 1 DM) and an unidentified TF (4 ships total - 1 AV, 1 CVE, 1 PB, 1 unknown).

Summary of Operations 11/18/42

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-23 (27 ships) departing the Eastern US for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard convoy EX-23 includes 136K supply and 35K fuel, no air units or LCU’s.

North Pacific: No further contact reported with the unidentified Jap submarine detected SW of Bella Bella off the Canadian west coast on 11/17. Air and surface ASW patrols by Canadian forces continue.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 11/17 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Roi-Namur. Detected status of Roi-Namur shows undetermined Japanese aircraft based on the island, also evidence airfield is expanded to maximum size. Current size of Roi-Namur airfield is 4(1). Known Jap LCU’s on Roi-Namur from available intelligence data include HQ 24 Air Flotilla, 2 Sasebo SNLF Co, 6 Base Force. No other visible Japanese forces or activity at Roi-Namur.

Central/South Pacific: Sigint entry for 11/17 reports intercepted radio transmissions from one or more unidentified Jap TF(s) at hex location 163, 152 NW of Penhryn Island. Movement information of this contact is not available. Location of this contact is not within range of Allied naval air search. The contact in this Sigint report could be a Jap submarine patrol, could be a KB sortie – either way Pillager is likely making an attempt to locate and interdict transport shipping (convoys) between the mainland US and South Pacific.

No US or Allied naval forces or shipping is presently moving or operating near the contact location. Current movement courses set for several transport convoys in transit between the South Pacific theatre and mainland US are expected to potentially take them through a possible operating area of the detected Jap TF(s) in the event the Jap TF(s) move far enough southward from their current position. No action is being taken at this time to re-route the convoys as none of them are currently nearby, though this could be a possibility later depending on further developments. Naval air search flights from Tahiti and Christmas Is have been activated.
