Yes it has shaken up our opponant, he is taking a little time out at the moment

There are a number of factors at play...
He is advancing over (what the game considers) open ground against forces dug in to level 6...
Our forces have a lot of heavy Arty, including lots of 15cm and 10 cm 9these are really dedicated long range counter battery pieces) guns, and a lot of AT guns.
He has been in the jungle on low supplies, and probably had a lot of disabled squads to begin with.
We have lots of supply, and good commanders.

But this is just a delay position, to force him to prepare for this place, while our main defensive line is across the river and also well dug in. That should generate a months delay.

However the success of this makes it tempting to move 2-4 div back over the river! The problem is the enemy air will eventually smash us in the open... But while he is smashing the ground forces our airforce will be left untouched... if he focus's on out airforce then our ground forces will cause the delay. While he is dealing here we intend to attack his lodgements in the Andaman Chain of islands.

With around 70 Franks lost in a turn, and unit morale low this was not a good turn! We didn't loose many pilots though.

Why do you think your Franks did so poorly against his Corsairs?? I'm about a week ahead of you and I've still done well in my limited air war (no offensive air missions by Allies in 12 days!! [X(]).

The height advantage "bounce" factor. The Corsair were incorrectly set as well.

Being a year away from this kind of Allied airpower I cringe just looking at the report. I have enough trouble now dealing with sweeps of just 50 Lightnings and 2E attacks with 60 bombers. But 1554E and 160 2E plus the unmatchable quality of those sweeps! Ouch! [:(]

Plans have a habit of not working... Our TF's decide to arrive at dawn... not bombard and fight during the daylight hours... with untidy results. The only redeaming point is that for some reason the enemy planes only used bombs!

Not only did our TF not bombard at night, but the Tanaka CA Tf decides not to run in either!

Our CV's are moving up the straits of Malacca and are undetected. so we will position for when they are ready.

We loose 6 DD today, but the capital ships are OK due to his orders to use bombs only... they should get away, but next turn we will LRCAP them just in case he sends his CV's forward... If he does our CV's should be able to get in a long range strike from the vicinity of Georgetown.

Next turn we are going to send the Tanaka CA Tf in to Litle Andaman, move the CV's up so they can strike at range 8 on the island in the morning phase and see if we can get the CA Tf's he has defending the place... We are sweeping with lots of ground based fighters and will send in about 100 Netties to try to hit what is there, or soak up CAP in the process... should be an interesting turn!

1 August 1943 Victory!

The Andamans should make a good dive location after the war!

Summery
It starts poorly when Tanakas TF is detected on raider and due to low visibility is ambushed at 2000 yards and badly beat up. Later in the day the TF absorbs some of the strikes despite a decent LRCAP. We loose 3 CA outright, will probably loose a CL. Two CA and a CL get away with only moderate damage… we have a shortage of CA now

The main battle occurs, Mini KB and the lighter CV/CVL/CVE of the enemy react towards each other. KB Main stays two hex behind, 7 hex from the enemy fleet CV’s behind little Andaman, but only 4 hex from the enemy lighter TF. Our CVE/CVL Tf and the enemy CV/CVL/CVE Tf end up two hex from one another… the carnage then begins.

Our fighter sweeps against Little Andaman go in first, they get chewed up but appear to draw a lot of CAP from the enemy fleet CV’s who are in the adjacent hex.

Our strikes go in first, probably because we knew exactly where the enemy fleet was from last turn, and we had excellent ISR over the area, whereas our CV’s were until this time undetected. The strike is coordinated and strikes home well.

We then get a lightly escorted strike on the fleet CV’s near little Andaman and strike home… I think the fact that a lot of the CAP had been drawn by our previous sweeps helps. Three torps into Wasp, 4 into Enterprise, 3 into BB Wahsington.

Then enemy strikes come in generally in “CV” loads and are met by a strong CAP, shooting many strikes from the sky, but still we suffer damage on our light CVE/CVL forces and loose a CVL.

Main KB comes through unscathed!

Only about half of our land based Nava strike aircraft fly, soaking up CAP but not doing much otherwise.

I agree with Obvert, the need to pursue. American CVs are tough and you need to sink them now vs seeing them again in '44.

Thanks gents, concur that the other CV's probably haven't sunk, but they will be incapable of air ops. The danger is those airgroups have gone to the islands, which are probably over stacked, but with airHQ's on them become quite dangerous.

KB is in a parallel pursuit if that makes sense

our subs have been vectored in as well. Being close to our airbases means we have been able to pull some of the decimated airgroups off and replace with 48 fresh Kate and about a similar number of Zero, plus some Judy.

We have a 1/3- ½ load of torps.

A danger is all his SCTF ships, our CV TF are fairly light on in that department.

Max effort from our land based airgroups as well.

Andrew is a bit despondent at the moment, having lost two CV battles now, and he is probably unable of defending the islands now…. So they will eventually fall with the loss of 4 bdes of infantry (mostly Brits).

IMHO Andrew's defeat resulted from sticking around the islands with his CVs too long. He had done ok until now, but as you state you knew where he was but he did not know where you were. I believe this sort of battle has occurred several times in this and other AARs (PzB, Castor Troy as Japan, even GreyJoy although under different circumstances). AFBs beware operating too far out of LBA range lest you feel forced to keep CVs on station like this. Once the CV ratio favors the USN this becomes less risky, but during a time of relative parity look out.

The strategy Andrew has used here is really sound, it is incredibly dangerous for the Japanese player... you HAVE to do something about it. The key as the Japanese is being agile enough to react and doing it in MASS. If you go in in penny packets then the outcome won't be good. We had been expecting a move against Sumatra or the DEI, we had prepositioned the fleet accordingly. I think Andrew expected/planned to have a few more days to get ready... and we caught him not as well prepared as he would have liked.

As the Japanese operating under your own land based air at this stage of the war is critical, it is the only way you can generate better than a 50/50 outcome... the benefit is the Allies have to come to you. Having the land bases in support means you can replenish airgroups...

We have won a tactical victory at quite a heavy cost. It will only become an operational victory if we can sink the bulk of the enemy fleet. Considering the bad weather (we are in the Monsoon) that is far from certain.

IMHO Andrew's defeat resulted from sticking around the islands with his CVs too long. He had done ok until now, but as you state you knew where he was but he did not know where you were. I believe this sort of battle has occurred several times in this and other AARs (PzB, Castor Troy as Japan, even GreyJoy although under different circumstances). AFBs beware operating too far out of LBA range lest you feel forced to keep CVs on station like this. Once the CV ratio favors the USN this becomes less risky, but during a time of relative parity look out.
