Doh! I got so excited seeing you do something with Allied carriers in Dec 41 that I missed that part. [:D]

I forgot to mention that 2 Marine fighter, a Marine SBD, and a Bolo loaded fast xAKs at San Fran. Tomorrow, they will leave with the faster TK/AOs for Australia with good escorts. Need both over there for prolonged operations. Both Lex and Big "E" need a full Marine fighter group placed on board.

Nothing Mike. The 18 plane Marine fighters will bring the CVs fighter strength up to 45 in January. The organic American CV Navy fighter strength starts off at 21 in Reluctant Admiral, but increases to 27 with a re-sizing in 1/42. Add in 36 DB (Dauntless) and 15 TB (Devastators) to fill out my 90 capacity CVs.

27 Navy fighters (upgrade to F4F-4s)
36 SBD Dauntless DBs
15 Devastators TBs (upgrade to Avengers)
18 Marine fighters (usually fill out with F4F-3s)
-----
96 planes total

If you figure the 5 American CVs have this, then KB can be attacked with some degree of success in May/June 42 IF opportunity presents itself. Before the July 1st re-sizing for Japanese CVs air groups AND if the Japanese players does not re-organize his CV air groups beforehand. Like add more Zeros and take off some Vals to get close to or slightly over max capacity. Most should be upgraded to the F4F-4 and the Avenger should be out. Add in a few British CVs and facing KB is not as daunting as it would seem. It would have to be away from Japan's Nell/Betty menace for me to engage, but it can be done. 225 fighters from the Americans is a good number to fight with vs 135 without the Marines on board.

In your Scenario 1 game as Japan, KB has 18 Zeros per CV until July 1st. That's only 108 Zeros vs my 225. I'll take those odds!![:D] I would take off at least one Val group for another Zero group of 27 or 36 Zeros. I usually add in CVL Ryujo with her 36 Zeros to increase all around survivability.

IMO, it should be SOP for the Allies to place the Marine fighters on each CV ASAP.

Interesting Michael. I never realized the US CVs had a capacity of 90. Add 15% and you can put 103 on each on if needed. Wow!

Can you do that on all of the US CVs? I thought only the Sara and Lex had that kind of capacity.

Another question on this issue is about over-filling CVs. If they go into the red is there any drop-off in performance or getting planes into the air quickly for CAP and strikes?

The Yorktown class have 90 capacity as well. They all just start with undersized fighter squadrons. It's a pretty standard tactic amongst experienced players to supplement with Marine fighters until the carrier fighter squadrons resize to 36.

It takes about 3 months for the Marine squadrons to become carreir trained, but even as carrier capable the ops losses are not significant.

The plan is to only let their capacity go into the "orange" not red. And I have seen no discernable drop off in performance in the orange.

If a heavy CV, regardless of which side, can have up to 5 air groups on board and stay below 115% capacity, they will still conduct air ops (IF this is wrong somebody correct me!). All the American CVs except Wasp and the Midway Class have a capacity of 90. Each carrier capable/trained air group has one re-size available after a mandatory re-sizing that happens to both sides with most scenarios/mods July '42.

In Scenario 1 and 2 as Japan, you have lots of extra capacity available. You can take off your Vals, but is that the best option??

Scenario 1 & 2
Akagi - 81 - 18Z, 18V, 27K = 63 (18 extra) transfer in a 24 or 27 plane Zero or 18 Vals from Hiryu
Kaga - 71 - 18Z, 18V, 27K = 72
Hiryu - 71 - 18Z, 18V, 18K = 54 (17 extra) 18 Vals to Akagi and add another 36 Zeros
Soryu - 63 - 18Z, 18V, 18K = 54 (9 extra) not much room here
Shokaku - 72 - 18Z, 27V, 27K = 72
Zuikaku - 72 - 18Z, 27V, 27K = 72
Ryujo - 48 - 12Z, 12K = 24 (24 extra) re-size Zero to 36

For me, the Vals from Hiryu go to Akagi and a 36 plane Zero group goes to Hiryu. Maybe a small 9 plane Zero to Soryu. I now have over 180 Zeros with KB vs 108 (no changes and no Ryujo).
Note - I have a game as Japan ongoing. [;)]

Reluctant Admiral
Akagi - 75 - 21Z, 27V, 27K = 75
Kaga - 81 - 27Z, 27V, 28K = 81
Hiryu - 69 - 21Z, 24V, 24K = 69
Soryu - 63 - 21Z, 21V, 21K = 63
Shokaku - 72 - 24Z, 24V, 24K = 72
Zuikaku - 72 - 24Z, 24V, 24K = 72
Ryujo - 48 - 30Z, 18K = 48

In my game, you have 168 Zeros with Ryujo and 138 without.

I've been playing WITP/AE for 7 years. Initially, I was of the mindset to keep the American CVs away from KB until '43 or later. It has evolved somewhat to where I will be a little more aggressive once I get those extra Marine fighters on board and some training done.

Good to know. I need to play the Allies again to remember what they can do.

Also, great to hear that the orange level won't hurt ops. I'll feel comfortable stacking extra planes in groups now. All groups I have are sized to the max, so at least I got that far.

American CVs off Rabaul!!

Post by ny59giants »

Dec 16th (Part 1): Des reported being surprised at Rabaul. I think he was expecting to see Lexington only there, not Enterprise joining her. Force Z ran over RO-64 at Deboyne Island and is now 6 hexes from Rabaul (Des reported knowing she is there now [:(]). My 2 CVs hit a lot of shipping.

Now what?!?
1) Force Z to go in to hit any shipping left there to unload. I have ordered her to "Remain on Station."
2) Break off a SC TF from my 2 CV TF as I have 8 CAs and 18 DDs. Would it be better to form 1 or 2 SC TF?? If so, what are the number of CAs and DDs in each TF?? Where to place them??
3) Both CVs will move 1 or 2 hexes west to cover the SC TF and hit shipping. CAP will be 60 or 70% as I expect some attempts with Nell/Betty out of Truk with extended range Zeros escorts.

Are you sure it is only one resize?
I have gourps resized and once back on a carrier, I can resize them again!

I'm positive on the one re-sizing as I have done them before. There may be more available, but have not done so to know if there is either a finite or infinite number of times you can re-size.

Does anyone have the answer to this??

Dec 16th (part 2): Malaya and China are quiet on the ground still....

Key: c = casualties; b = airbase hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits, ()= number planes destroyed

Subs:
RO-64 is run over by Force Z at Deboyne Island off the southern tip of New guinea. I guess Des knows where this powerful force is now. Rats!
I-172 takes a shot at Saratoga's escorts as they leave Pearl.

Malaya: [>:]

Burma:
Rangoon - 12 Oscars escort in 29 Sally [11b, 2s, 23r] The Buffalo are over LRCAP the transports with a brigade off Port Blair.

China:
Changsha - More attacks on the AF by 19 Lily, 30 Sally, 20 Sally, and then 21 Lily. Damage is now 0-36-46

Philippines:
Lingayen -86th PS Coastal Artillery Battalion is targeted by 13 Sonia
Manila - 40 Zero escort in 40(1) Betty to find 9(2) P-40 Warhawk on CAP. They score well as 9b, 17s, 59r!! The number of supply hits is a concern. [:(]

Rabaul:
My 6" CD guns continue to get hits on the small xAKLs trying to unload troops from 2 different TFs. [:)]
Ground combat at Rabaul (106,125)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 4491 troops, 45 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 144

Defending force 1931 troops, 30 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 40

Japanese adjusted assault: 31

Allied adjusted defense: 21

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 0) [:)]

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-)
experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
99 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
121 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Assaulting units:
144th Infantry Regiment
III/66th Naval Guard Unit
II/66th Naval Guard Unit
1st JNAF Coy

Defending units:
Lark Battalion
Rabaul Coastal Gun Battalion
Rabaul Det. Base Force

CVs:
KB @ 154,119 (13 NW Johnson Island) - she moved the normal 9 hexes this turn. Des tells me they are done refueling.
Mini-KB @ 74,103 (6 NE Kendari) - Looks like a raid and possible support of landing at Kendari as transport are above Ternate.

Saratoga (12 South Pearl)
Lexington and Enterprise - see above posting

Notes:
TF 139 leaves San Fran with 2 Marine fighters, 1 Marine SBD, 1 Bolo, 22k supply, and 200k fuel bound for Australia. 6x T2-SE-A Class TKs, 2x Esso Type -T Class TKs, 9x Federal Type E Class TKs, 3 DDs, PG, 2 AMC, AVD, AVP.
2 SC TFs were formed (2 CAs, 3 DDs each) to try to get a shot at any fleeing ships from Rabaul for Truk. In his shoes, I would set them for Full Speed and try to get as close to Truk as I could. Lex and E move three hexes closer. Force Z will run into Rabaul and stay there.
Pearl - one more day and the base will be fully repaired. DD Monaghan [79-94(72)-57)15)-88] has been fighting fires for days now. The fires have never gone below 50, but I refuse to scuttle her.

Lesson learned around Rabaul to think through as many options for your opponent that you can think of. I didn't in this case. Hopefully, I can move fast enough in a westerly direction to get some more licks in.
Port Moresby - I often do not try to defend this base, but I am going to try to make this a large speed bump. I have 206 Assault Value there now, forts at 1 with 85% towards next level, Aviation Support at 71, and supply at 8834 with another 6712 still to be unloaded. I have a PBY group and the 4 other small patrol groups that start every game here.

Lexington and Enterprise (2 NW of Manas) - plans to follow Force Z down to Sydney for replenishment and minor repairs (slightly less than one week travel time). Will stay till after Jan 1st to re-size fighters from 21 to 27.
Saratoga - 3 NE Christmas Island headed for Canton Island to refuel from the 8k in fuel there before heading to Sydney.

Notes:
I hope I was able to delay Des' operations in the Solomons and New Guinea area for a few days while he awaits KBs arrival. This allows me time to build up my defenses.

The transports with fuel and Marine fighters will not arrive at Australia until mid-January. So, I have to rely on the limited fuel I have there and what will be unloading at Perth. Thankfully, I have lost less ships that expected from the Luzon area, so it will help long term.
