CV TF moves only 39 hexes in 25 days.

Post by Rusty1961 »

I had the Lexington and the Saratoga some 280 miles east of Hawaii when the Lex was sunk by a Japanese I-boat.

Since that moment, I can't get the Saratoga TF to move more than one or two hexes a turn. It has been some 25 days since the sinking of the Lex and I've only been able to get the remaining CV TF to move some 39 hexes SW.

I've tried moving full-speed, Cruise-speed, mission speed. I've tried changing my destination hex, everything.

Ideas?

It almost sounds as if your TF is out of fuel. Check the endurance numbers for all ships in the TF, if any or all are reading '0', then that might be the problem.

Sure does sound like they are out of fuel.

If not, please post a screen shot of the TF and we might be able to spot what's going on.

As you can see, no fuel or speed problems with each vessel in the TF.

What's in TF 202? What is its condition?

Also, just looked again. You have Remain on Station activated.

Remain on station pertains to it "remaining" on station once it reaches it's destination.

It never moves to it's destination more than a hex or two a turn.

<...>

6.2.7.1 FOLLOW TASK FORCE
A TF given Follow Task Force orders has the same destination as the targeted TF, although the TF Information Screen will not list a DH for it. If Follow Task Force is selected, the Tactical Map is brought up. Click on the TF icon that you want the current TF to follow, and it will return to the TF Information Screen. During movement, it will always move so as to stay in the same hex as the TF it is unless ordered to trail at a distance. If the following TF is not fast enough to keep up, the followed Task Force will slow down to allow the following TF to keep up.

Don may have hit the nail on the head. Not sure how the TF in question obtained the following TF, but I deleted the order and we'll see how the next turn goes.

Thanks, guys.

Thank you. That is probably the problem.

ship fuel states gonna bite yer behind quite often in this game!

if the following TF is in the same hex as the CV TF, you can do a refuel-at-sea, but be careful you don't drain your CV TF, leaving it unable to make port!

create a temporary EscortTF, w/ only the empty ships, & change it from Full Refuel to Tactical Refuel before you tag the Replenish TF at Sea button. Also you must probably set the EscortTF's destination (to Suva?) before you replenish. under the Tac Refuel option, you'll only take on enough fuel to reach the destination + 10% - but if the TF is still set to Follow, the game might not realize that you're only going to Suva & will prob'ly attempt a Full Refuel anyway.

reset the EscortTF to follow, or merge it back into TF 202 after you've replenished.

then, contemplate the delights of a ReplTF, consisting of 2 AO & 2-4 DD. USN starts the game w/ a coupla' three 18-knot AOs, they're just the thing to trail 3-6 hexes behind your CVTFs. but as MartinB said, your CVTF will be speed-limited by the speed of the following TF. so advance towards your target, refuel from the ReplTF, then remove the ReplTF's follow orders as the CVTF runs in to its launch point.
