Hi folks,
I have always been very interested in the German army both in ww1 and ww2. My focus here tho will be ww2. I have decided that every day I will post on one German division each day. I have a lot of information but I'm sure there are facts and tidbits I will leave out, feel free to correct me and add to it. I'm going to start with the army panzer divisions then the panzer grenadier. Then I will hit the infantry, grenadier and volksgrenadier. Then I will cover all the misenlanious divisions which include security , flak, Luftwaffe , air, parachute, light , supply, jäger , ski, mountain , and all others. The rap up will be the SS divisions. You have to have an understanding of the German wehrkeise system. In short it acts like the American national guard. It had responsibilies for recruiting, drafting, inducting and training German soldiers. Without this system in place there was no way the Germans could have gotten past Poland . Every single German division had a wehrkeise it was supplied by. So we start with the 1st panzer division.

The 1st Panzer Division consisted mainly of Thuringians, with significant numbers of Saxons and Prussians and Later draftees from other parts of Germany. The 1st Panzer took part in the occupation of Austria (1938), the Sudetenland (1938), and Prague (1939). In the Polish campaign of 1939, it rolled into suburbs of Warsaw in just eight days. It attacked across Luxemburg and souther Belgium in May 1940, and fought in the battle of Dunkirk, before turning south and helping finish off the French Republic. It only lost 495 fatal casualties in the process.
The 1st Panzer crossed into the Soviet Union when Operation Barbaorssa began on June 22nd, 1941 with a strenght of approximately 155 tanks. It formeed part of Army Group North's 4th Panzer Group. It took part in the annihilation of the Soviet III armored Corps at Dubysa in June. By August 16th it was down to only forty-four tanks. Took part in the drive to Moscow and was within twenty miles. By February 18th, 1942 it was down to 18 tanks. Helped save th 9th Army which was nearly surrounded at Rzhev.
In early July, the 1st and 2nd Panzer Divisions surrounded and destroyed or captured 218 soviet tanks, 592 gunds and 1,300 anti-tank guns near Pushkeri. In August the 1st Destroyed sixty-five superheavy KV-1 and KV-2 tanks. In Janurary it was sent to Amiens, France and was brought up to full strenght. A full battalion of PzKw V's and about 100 Pzkw VI's tanks. It was sent to Italy and subdued the Italian 11th Army. Returned to the Russian Front in Ocober 1943, and took part in the battle of the Kiev Salient. It failed in it's objective to rescue the XI and XXXXII Corps. In 1944 most of the 1st was trapped and destroyed at Szekesfehervar, Hungary. The rest of the Division kept fighting and extricated itself from the Red Army and Surrendered to the Americans in 1945.

Baron Maximilian von Weichs was chosen as the first commander of the 1st by Colonel General Ludwig Beck because Beck thought his cautious and conservative nature would be an effective counterweight to the blitzkrieg theories of Heinz Guderian.
