Here's a question for you economy experts: I was tinkering around with the oil refinery's looking for ways to boost the output of supplies for China and I found a refinery in Bangkok and when I went to expand it the message was that it would cost X amount of HI and Y amount of manpower........so I looked at the manpower pool and saw that I had enough manpower available and the thought occured to me.....why would you not want to put all that manpower to work immediately doing something productive? Is there some minimum amount of manpower that you need to reserve for some other purpose besides industry? I'm thinking of expanding all kinds of industry things so as to use up all that extra manpower because I don't know of a good reason not to. Yes?

I'm finding, as I try to learn to play the Japanese, that re-reading Chapter 13 is useful. It illustrates why Tracker shows what it does. Re Manpower, you need it for replacements in military units, as well as some forms of military device production. When a new LCU comes onto the map you'll be charged for its initial outfitting. A division usually costs something around or just above 3000 Manpower points, all charged that one turn. You're still early and haven't seen a lot of LCUs activate, but you will. Those "fees" are manageable, but you need to run a balance in Manpower to be ready. Of the major accounts, I find it's the easiest to keep in the black.
Apart from what the Moose states, be very careful with your expansions. While manpower will probably never run out...
Firstly, there is a threshold for how many Res/Oil are available on the map. Hence, a limit to how much can be sustained for HI/LI production.
Secondly, expansion costs supplies. Expanding too much, too soon will create a supply problem.
Finally, wholesale changes will need to be balanced with HI production ...

PS. Why expand the refinery in Bangkok? Refineries only provide 1 supply, 9 fuel for 1 Oil. Oil is limited, it will run out around the end of '43. Of course it never fully runs out, there will still be enough to cover Oil Ref, just no surplus.

Secondly supplies will not trickle into China from here unless you've openned the road and are more likely to pool in Bangkok or go to Singapore.

Finally, even though expanding HI might seem like a good thing for supply production in china, remember it takes 500 days (1000(repaircost)/2(suppliesproduced) to get back the investment. Of course you get the added bonus of HI points too... what about LI ? No way, 1000 days and it is less efficient resource wise than HI plants.

I'm sure I've forgotten some stuff, but essentially, be slow, be careful - esp. as a new player.
[edit] Knew I forgot ... and Bangkok will have to import oil too ...

I had no idea. Good advice. I WAS getting reckless and didn't think the whole thing through. It's great to have expert advice, many thanks.

I've got the veterans from the Kota Bharu bombardment replenished ( except for the 2 BB's ) and they are riding to the rescue of the Miri and Brunei landings. They will be there in about 2 days going at full speed.

I almost forgot to post the animation of the strategic map. It's from 8Dec to 12Dec now.

Okie dokie.......I've gotten Rob's first turn just now 20:19 hours 11May2012 and I'm starting an AAR of our game so this one is on hold for about 24 hours or so.

EDIT: it's now 02:51 hours 13May2012 and it appears that I've used about two full days to do the first turn. I felt so bad about it taking so long compared to how soon I usually get my turns out that I may have rushed it. I forgot to move somebody into the HK hex for instance, to do come ground combat sooner. D'oh.

Larry around Wake do you have any surface ships preferably CA or larger??  If so recon and bombard, until you get reinforcements. Wake doesn't start with a lot of supply and bombardment eats supply up at a pretty decent rate. Recon and get the DL or detection level up before and during bombardment. The chances of success are that much better.
Using the float planes to do recon is a capital idea. I like that a lot. Thanks.

So um........I'm going through the "list all TF's" list of ships to find those whose destination needs tweaking and I've found a DD that has collected some damage. Should I peel it out of the TF and fix it NOW before it accumulates into several day's Pierside repair or do you guys let it ( damage ) accumulate until the pierside repair is adequately justified? I'm sort of leaning toward the idea of leaving it at sea until the next time that TF has to refuel but usually my ASW patrols near the home islands stay out at sea for a significant period of time.

I was too late preventing the horses leaving the barn but I can still chase them down to put the saddle on 'em. There's so many ships you could call this a target rich environment. I figure my TF is so much faster then those AK types that I'll probably be able to catch at least a few.

My recon by sub shows, I think, that nobody is home at Ocean Island so it should be low-hanging fruit. I've got somebody headed that way even as we speak. I'm wondering if I ought to fly one of my Mavis recon jobs down to Tarawa and let the transport Mavis's fly supply into those newly captured places.

Yesterday we got lucky in that the Guam coastal guns didn't hit anything and I don't want to push my luck today. Especially since my ground troops seem to have an adequate supply of supplies and there's only relatively defenseless ships in the TF I'm thinking of moving.

I'd love to take credit Larry but recon and bombardment go hand and hand.
Recon and DL gives you a much better chance of success , so make sure you use it when you have it at you're disposal.
Something else you might want to think about if you're in sub infested waters (since at wars start ASW skill is much lower than search) is drop some float planes down to sea search 1 to 2 k to help spot or raise DL of subs. No scientific experiments but I have to believe it will help prevent attacks.

Um......I've been running my ASW planes at 100' ASL to hopefully increase the DL of those submerged pests. Is 1,000' better? If so I'll do it.

I thought I'd drive a sub into the harbour at Midway to take a look around, see what we can see.

From reading over the past so many years I beleive the general consensus for ASW is 1,000 feet.

I run my ASW at 1k but until I train my pilots up in that skill I use naval search at 1 and 2 k. Naval search that low will spot subs.
Since ASW is a smaller search arc than naval search I also use short legged IJAAF planes around the Yellow Sea in naval search
instead of ASW.

Here's Manchukuo Infantry that's eligible to be purchased. Note the categories on my personal notes I color coded these with a highlighter in the order they should be bought according to their experience & value to the war effort and also wrote what these boys should be prepping for. This should be helpful to all IJ players that don't have it, hopefully I won't assist the other side too much in posting it...[:D]

The days you see is how many days they have to wait to combine IIRC because waiting for other units.

Somehow WAY TOO MUCH stuff got unloaded at Singora so I find that I have to try to pull that stuff back off the beach onto the ship to avoid losses from spoilage.
