Old man ElCid was asleep at the mouse on this one. Your men do not respect you, they fear your decision process.

I finally figured out the problem here: there is a rail line feeding the city which isn't shown in art - RHS has the actual
rail lines and rarely one must use reveal codes Y to see them. I normally use reveal codes R to see roads and trails -
and this place seemed pretty isolated from supply. I play logistically oriented - and forgot about the rail line - which
meant that these units are not starving. A clue should have been the bright yellow color - indicating lots of supplies.

Ground combat at Tsiaotso [E China] (88,42)
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 27660 troops, 350 guns, 100 vehicles, Assault Value = 942
Defending force 42982 troops, 126 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 899
Japanese adjusted assault: 290
Allied adjusted defense: 985
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 3 (fort level 3)
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)
Japanese ground losses:
2454 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 310 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 34 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 18 disabled
Guns lost 75 (1 destroyed, 74 disabled)
Allied ground losses:
100 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Assaulting units:
16th China Pack C Brigade
35th Draft B Division
6th China Pack C Brigade
4th China Pack C Brigade
IJA Sp Armord Train
12th Army
1st Ind Gun Co
2nd Ind Gun Co
Defending units:
ROC 27th Corps
ROC 5th New Lt Cps Division
ROC 93rd Corps
ROCAF 4th Base Force
ROC 80th Corps
ROC 7th "Egr Rgt" Construction Battalion
The shock attack came because a division crossed a river. Not a good idea at this location -
which is supply rich due to a rail line to the West feeding it. I need to cut that LOC before
engaging here with all these strong units.

Actually it isn't - and further the largest TF in port was not engaged at all.
I need to plant mines here - and keep a submarine on patrol in spite of
no reports of enemy in area. Three subs were available for ops - and
a heavy surface task force right in hex. KB is now attempting to intercept
the raiders. Do not ask why AE hates to let bombers engage unless a
target has been tracked for days? No idea.

hMMMM, SOUNDS LIKE A FAILURE OF GENERAL STAFF TO ISSUE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR A COVERING ESCORT FORCE.
It is. No reports of enemy in area - the area teeming with bombers, warships, submarines - and
cross focused recon from nearby islands - there was no sense it should be necessary since no
enemy TFs were on the plot.

SPECIAL ARMORED TRAIN???
![]()
RHS features armored trains, not in other mods except those which are based on it.
These are confined - by rare house rules (there are few in RHS) - to operating on
rail lines. Russia has many - the US has a couple - even Canada has one. But Japan
has three proper trains - 1st, 2nd and Special - as well as the technical minor case
of the First Independent Artillery Company - which has the single Schneider Rail Gun
(30 cm). Note this location is on a main rail line. All Japanese armored trains are
in Manchukuo when the game starts and pretty much are restricted to Manchukuo,
Korea and China in practical terms.
Armored trains differ from each other significantly. Russian and Japanese - and
Canadian - trains typically are wierd ground combat units - classed as armor for
movement and also because their armored RR cars have actual armor! They
usually have light artillery, AAA and infantry devices. Others - notably the US ones -
are almost purely CD guns. Note the one on Hawaii - present in most mods as part
of the Hawaii Separate Coast Defense Brigade (usually not with its proper name) -
is separate in RHS so the Allies may move it by ship - if they wish - to a place with
rail lines! The other one is at Fort Lewis (Tacoma) - and intended to defende Aberdeen
& Hoquiam Washington - an ideal invasion point with good LOC and no coast defenses.
The location is a port and airfield - and threatens Tacoma, Bremerton, and even
Portland. While the Canadian train has a CD mission - it has small CD guns - but
an actual infantry force - so is more like Russian and Japanese trains in detail. The
Fort Lewis train has 12 inch CD mortars. The Hawaii train has 8 inch CD guns
and disabled 12 inch CD mortars (because they start held in reserve without actual
crews). The unique Schneider Rail Gun unit in Japan, in spite of its CD origins, is
more generally used as land artillery. Note that it too is here - the First Independent
Artillery Company. The Second Independent Artillery Company - also present - is
sort of a composite heavy artillery unit that is fully mechanized - but it isn't a rail unit.
In later editions of RHS you can identify RR units by RR or the word "rail" in the name.
That is generally the case in Test 4 - but the First Company had not yet picked up the
RR part of its name.

Sid, what is the difference of gray or white lines? And can u explain the gray line traced thru the woods hex from Wuchang to Changsha?

Gray lines are main line railroads.
White lines are secondary rail lines.
There are several critical rail lines missing from stock - never mind that IRL Japan actually managed to unify the Chinese rail system in 1944.
I put the missing sections back in. The Wuchang to Changsha line is the ONLY major rail line between North China and South China - and Changsha also is the critical nexus with a secondary line going East to Shanghai from it. There also is a line North from Hong Kong - and one from Indochina - and more or less everything going a long way must pass through Changsha. But I forgot about the main line to Sian from Kaifeng - and it was feeding those battles I lost so badly. The secondary line just North of it isn't the main line - and you can see Sian has main line even in stock art.

And the road net
![]()
The use of many extra locations is borrowed from Treespider - suggested by Mifune who referred me to his mod.
The road net is partly amplified by trails - which represent different things in different places. Along the Yangtze
and some other rivers, these represent local riverine transport assets - which will move some supplies - and which
permit troops to move slowly but better than just going overland. There is a similar trail system along the lower
Yellow River - and the upper Yellow river as well. This is criticial in the Upper Yellow River area because there are neither
roads nor rail lines - and units are in danger of "starving" - as well as there is no incentive to route units along the
river - which is the main way they would go.

Actually this is a French metric gage line - all the way. A similar line went all the way to Kunming - but
the ROC destroyed it in Northern Tonkin - where you see the two hex gap. It was rebuilt and operated
again until a couple of years ago. But during the war - it was entirely gone - amazing demonlition -
only the grade remained.
In RHS - if the game lasts long enough- the Allies build the Burma-Kunming line - which more or less follows
the logical route. It was begun in 1941 but not completed because the Japanese invaded North Burma.
Little trace of it remains - one sign at the front of a tunnel excavation is all I have seen. It was, however,
supported by the US - which sent a medical team to help the workers. The Burma Siam RR is just to the
West of this image - also a secondary line - and it is built midwar.
In RHS rail lines (and roads sometimes) change - because we have a different pwhex for every season of the war.
In different years, the same season will have a different rail / road net - representing construction - most of it Allied
In Thailand and in Burma you see "primary rail line" which isn't related to a different gage - but to different standards
of signals and other things affecting rail thruput. Most places it also would model different weight of rails. Gage alone
isn't that critical - some metric gage rail lines handle very heavy equipment - and some standard and broad gage lines
are pretty light duty. Rail capacity is related to several factors - including the foundation - the weight of the rail - the
kind and quality of signals - and the amount of infrastructure in each "division" (section of the line) or "grand division"
(group of adjacent divisions run to a common standard).

Look at the art work on the sally... Sid may need to change his bomb load to a heavier mix.

RE: RHS 101 v 3 Test 4B: Skirmishing and reprisals in Russia
To Soviet Foreign Minister
From Japanese Foreign Minister
For three days a unit withdrawing from the Amur Province has been attacked.
I allowed three units on the main rail line in North Manchukuo to leave once it was clear they would. I expected similar courtesy here.
Since I didn't get it - I ordered a deep penetration raid to capture a Soviet town.
And tomorrow we will retake Moho - which started this whole chain of border violations.
The deep penetration raid - left because I didn't trust the situation was totally resolved - needs MANY days to leave - and I will not order it to start UNLESS you agree not to attack it. And - note - it cut the Trans Siberian RR and it remains cut. If you want to restore RR traffic - as badly as I want to restore shipping in the sea of Japan -
it is time to tell the troops we have an agreement and to allow forces to leave the country - as we did on the main line near Borzia.
