Error, wont load .net issue.

Post by major.pain »

Started with this issue with windows (XP) updates today badgering me to install 3-4 .net patch updates and after running through the install i would be badgered again by windows updates soon after to install the same updates, in the end i uninstalled all my .net and reinstalled. Everything went fine, all upto date with windows update ect but came to run COH this evening and i get this error screen instead of the games splash screen.
Uninstalled COH and reinstalled, patched, same deal. Seems i am not alone withthis .net proble, any ideas.

Don't you just hate that. Sorry I don't have an answer myself. But I am careful not to update Java for the very same reasons. But I'm sure WCS can help you out.

Sorry to hear you're having problems. If you've got system restore points set, maybe try rolling back your system to the last point before which you applied the updates. Also be sure any anti-virus software is turned off before installing the game or .net; some anti-virus software prevents important files like csc.exe from installing or running properly.

Before you try a system restore, try what I did. Uninstall the game, then delete the Conflict of Heroes Awakening the Bear folder from your Matrix Games folder. Then check My Documents and make sure there is no Conflict of Heroes folder inside the Western Civilization Software folder if there is one. This is where your saves and screenshots are stored so back them up or move them first.

It wouldn't hurt to restart your computer after that. Then turn off your antivirus and install the game, allowing the .Net, DX amd XNA to run and repair.

Good luck.
Conflict of Heroes "Most games are like checkers or chess and some have dice and cards involved too. This game plays like checkers but you think like chess and the dice and cards can change everything in real time."

I solved it after a little trial and error so if anybody is having a issue with .net give this a shot. First i disabled my antivirus while i completed this, i then uninstalled all my .net starting with the newest version, then all earlier versions, working back, restarting pc when asked to ect untill i removed all my .net.

Next install .net v1.1 next v1.1 updates from windows update.

I then skipped over installing .net v2.0 and .net v3.0 instead just installing .net v3.5 as this actually has the earlier .net included if you go to your "add remove programs" after install you will see v2.0 and v3.0 are installed.

Restart pc, back on windows update and install the .net patches, there are about six or so for your different .net versions, again another restart. Done.

Game now works without any issue. Hope this helps some one else.

Glad to hear you got the problem sorted out. I've been reading some Microsoft blogs with discussions about .NET installation and corruption problems, and there doesn't seem to be any easy way of solving these sorts of things.

I found an error looking through the event viewer logs that kept referring to .net 2.0 runtime optimization service failing to compile and another one i forget now also to do with .net 2.0 so i tried a different way of reinstalling my .net as something i was doing on the previous installs was corrunpting it in some way.

For anyone with a corrupted .NET installation who can't get it repaired through the normal .NET installers, this may also be worth a try:
