RE: Plight of the Antietam
The Japanese used 24 Jills, 18 Judys, 6 Graces and 12 kamikazes to attack one DD! [8|]
Seems like they should have sought bigger game. [:-]
[I know the AI allocates the attacks so the player doesn't have control of which squadrons go for which TFs, so this is not a criticism of your opponent!]

No matter how bad a situation is, you can always make it worse. - Chris Hadfield : An Astronaut's Guide To Life On Earth
RE: Plight of the Antietam
The used those planes to attack 2 DD's [;)] and sank one of them was sunk. We don't know if the japs knew there were 2 or 3 or more DD's in the fleet.
I'm not surprised really, given the location of these two ships...
ALSO, more importantly, my invasion fleets were heavily LRCAP'ed from Amami Oshima & surrounding airfields (6-8 groups per isle on 80% LRCAP 20% Rest and that I'm sure contributed to the Japanese low exp, low morale, crappy pilots, crappy escorts, failing their morale check and decided to go after the next best target - a confirmed 2, possible 4 DD fleet 40 nautical miles off of Japan.
I've decided to bump up the numbers of all my Fast Raider fleets to a minimum 3 ships. These seem to be as effective as 2DD fleets in ASW & small craft battles, seem to have the same ability to avoid IJ airpower, and the extra ship adds a little more ummmphh for AA and surface combat. It seems as if the 2DD ones just dont have enough juice when encountering something bigger. Of course, I do have legacy legacy Fast Raider fleets out there and the occasional 1 DD fleet (cuz one got sunk)

RE: Plight of the Antietam
Are those straits at Wakkanai and Hakodate still mined? How did your subs transit without loss? Mine detecting sonar like in the movies??
Isn't Shasukotan Jima the one closest to Hokkaido? Is it Onnekotan Jima that you are going for?
Better check Porterfield's AA ammo levels!

RE: Plight of the Antietam
There's two islands "past" Shasukotan, Onnekotan Jima and Paramishuro (sp).
A few days ago, one of my sctf's covering my CV's had to go back for fuel, along the way, I set all the floatplanes to recon the bases. Most of the bases have 1k troops or so except for Shakutosan and the dot base immediately East - SE of Hokkadaido. 5 APD's can't carry an invasion force, just an occupation force...and none of my troops are really prepped for an atoll invasion.... so I decided to grab Shakutosan, based AV, AD, AS, AG's there to get search and small-boat rearm capability, for a bigger move to the south. I felt that if I grabbed a base or two closer to Japan at this moment, I'd lose it to a small counterattack (i've only got about 5 AV holding that island I just took - as I said, I'm doing the North as cheaply as possible while trying to give the impression of danger)
The straights just north of Wakkanai are not mined - it's the only opening into the Sea of Japan. The straights between Hokkaido and Honshu are not mined very much, I moved most of those subs through those straights with little to no loss.
And yeah, the Porterfield's gonna need to return to base - although the game is actually 1 week ahead of where we're at now.

RE: Plight of the Antietam
Ahh - I missed that dot base next to Onnekotan Jima - was probably thinking of the other one you mentioned next to Hokkaido.
Nice grab by the way. Taking initiative to attack weak points in the enemy line is a great way to move ahead at minimal cost, and throw him off balance.
BTW - straights are heterosexual people. The water filled channels are straits ...(and no, I was never an English teacher) [;)]

RE: Plight of the Antietam
Interestingly enough, having never gotten a PBEM past '43, I'm totally unused to the power and tempo the allies can do here.
Had I known better, I'd have been bombing Osaka on Day 1 instead of fearing the IJA/IJN aircraft. I'd have pushed towards Japan faster.
This is really a discovery game for me... as in, discovering what it's like to not get your Allied butt kicked all over the place for a year of game time, and discovering what it's like to go "wherever you want", discovering what its like to be the King of the Hill with P51H's. I havent' even started to fathom how I'm going to use some of the fancy planes like the P80 and such.
Of course, it also means planning a 15 division & assorted support troops invasion and that's going to be a monster task. I have 104 APA's, some 20-50 AKA/AK's, tons of ships...
but making it all happen smoothly, so I can get in and out of Japan's doorstep in 2-4 days, is going to be interesting.

Yeah, it looks awesome when you send TFs with half a dozen CVs all over the place - power to spare!
I've been watching the fighter combat reports and it seems to me that the P47 T-bolt has done better against the Franks than the Mustang. The Mustang may be king of the manoevering dogfight but the T-bolt is the rugged ship that can stick it out after damage in a nose to nose pass. Just my impression, too lazy to do an empirical review of the stats.

Bad note to end the day
RE: Plight of the Antietam
This was probably the best day for the Empire so far, thanks to a combination of my stupidity and a nice setup by Cruft. I left a couple of groups at low altitude when I switched them from an escort role to a sweep role, and paid for it by ending up on the wrong side of the AA battle.
Then, I do have to salute Cruft for his switch to a day attack at Fukue-Jima. he pretty much wiped out my Helldiver squadron there (easily replaceable) and did great damage to my P61's (I don't have a lot, and these things are invaluable in a night-cap role). It was a nice setup by Cruft. I had a feeling it was coming, but didn't act on it.
Now that I have 2 bases, soon to be 3, on the doorstep of Japan, it's not going to be this easy for Cruft to be able to pull a move like this. The bases are building quickly and nicely, and soon they'll be big enough where I can put enough CAP in the air to cover both phases of air combat.
The next turn was much better for me, but I still left a couple air groups at low altitude because well there's so much to do, it's just too easy to forget 1 or 2 things.

This was probably the best day for the Empire so far, thanks to a combination of my stupidity and a nice setup by Cruft. I left a couple of groups at low altitude when I switched them from an escort role to a sweep role, and paid for it by ending up on the wrong side of the AA battle.

Just a thought .. I check Witp Tracker Aircroups option and check my sweeps and escorts before submitting the turn. Both who is doing it, and at what altitude .. but like you I forget [;)]

Amen on the things this game forces you to track. I have taken to making a to-do list as I think of things and as I watch the combat replays.
Still manage to miss a few things each turn though...[8|]

RE: Plight of the Antietam
I have a lot of re-org going on right now, so the turn's going to take a few days.
I'm getting my troops positioned for embarkation to the invasion of Japan. If I want to land on Month 2, Day 1, I figure I'll need to start loading the transports about 2-3 weeks before.
I have three invasion options for and “first pass” pro’s cons of each:
#1 Korea instead of Kyushu
Pros: lots of bases, lots of landing zones, Can build level 9 port in Sea of Japan and open the “interior” of Japan to Invasion. Can probably take without too much damage to my infantry. Unexpected invasion site, may take too long for Cruft to figure it out, and may avoid the full brunt of the kami’s.
Cons: It’s not Japan. Longest supply line. Does not bring me any bases closer to Japan than other options. Victory Points probably not as much as Kyushu. Cruft can throw all his air to closing Korea as much as possible, and I’ll have to use my CV’s to keep the sea lines open instead of just lba.
#2 Kyushu
Pros: Lots of bases, extremely close to my air bases, easiest supply chain, easiest to reinforce and bring more troops
Cons: Obvious invasion location means probably the most well defended. Only a couple clear hexes to invade lest I face forts and forest multipliers. Can be reinforced by Japan with other troops on Kyushu. Will face the full brunt of the Kamikaze’s.
#3 Shikoko Island (the island with three bases between Kyushu and Honshu
Pros: Hard for Cruft to reinforce once it’s clear. Opens up the Inland Sea to invasion. Bypasses the forts on Kyushu, probably not well defended.
Cons: Only three bases. Does not connect to Kyushu or Honshu. Not a lot of VP’s.
I plan on coming ashore with 15 Infantry Divisions. Each infantry division will have an Armor unit designated as that ID’s armor unit. Each ID will have a “small” Arty unit attached to it. Every three ID’s makes a corps, and each corps will consist of (above and beyond the 3 ID’s, 3 Armor Units, and 3 Arty Units) it’s parent HQ, it’s parent CBT Eng, and it’s parent Arty unit. Any additional units attached to the corps will also come along for the ride (incl a couple amphib tank battalions). I’ll supplement the invasion force with a couple more Combat Engr regiments to beef up fort destruction. This will be my combat force.
Support Forces consist of the necessary USN and USA base forces to provide adequate support (haven’t figured out how much and how many, yet), construction battalions, and probably 10-15 AA units. I’ll also bring along the Army HQ.
I have 100+ APA’s and 50ish AKA’s and AK’s. I’ll use these and LCT’s LCI’s etc to load up the combat forces for a 1 (or 2) day unload (depending on if I have enough to unload all in one day). xAP’s and xAK’s will be used for the support forces (while relying on enough naval support landing via Amphib Support units to unload these). I’ll bring along a couple of empty 100 ship landing craft units to assist in unloading. I want to bring enough ships to unload everything in a maximum of 2 days.
So, to land 15 divisions and all that extra stuff, I’m guessing I’ll need around 500 ships just carrying troops supplies. Tack on another 400 or so Combat ships, and another 3-400 landing craft ships, and I’m looking at an invasion fleet of something like 1200-1500 ships.

RE: Plight of the Antietam
It is. A lot of it is simply “learning”. For example, I looked over my units for the amphib assault and saw a couple of “Amphib Tank BN” and thougt, well darn it, that’s gotta be in the invasion fleet for it’s clearly labeled “Amphibious”… so what’s in this amphib tank Bn?
A ton of LVT(A)-4’s are in it. Great!!! What’s an LVT(A)-4?
Oh it’s one of those amtraks but it has a 75mm cannon! Ding Ding Ding it’s definitely going.
I can’t imagine the number of 75mm cannons I’m going to throw at the Nippon. First off, I have about 300 aircraft that mount a 75 mm cannon, so there’s that. Then there’s a number of these amphib tank bn’s that are being used…. And I haven’t even considered the number of 75mm cannons in my LCU’s… must be a billion of them between the Infantry Divs, Arty, AA, and Tank units.

RE: Plight of the Antietam
Well, if I go after Kyushu, I need to stop him from being able to rail troops into the hex, or seriously limit his ability to reinforce. To do that, the best way I can think of is to use my B29's to ground attack all the locations in Kyushu that hold troops on a daily basis. This will force them out of "strat" mode and "move" mode and into Combat mode... that should slow them down a bit at least.
Of course, I need to drop level 9 forts to zero and take the base. to do that will require a large commitment of aircraft to pummel the troops on the ground and the port/af. So I figure I'll use the 4E's to bomb non-invasion hexes filled with troops, and use the 1E's and 2E's as close in ground support to the invasion. This is why it's key for me the "end" the strat bombing campaign by the end of this month. The only real HI center left is Tokyo, and Tokyo will get it's due...shortly.
If I go for Korea or Shikiko (sp), then those concerns are not there. I can easily take a port base in Korea with 15 divs in a couple days. I think. I can use airpower to prevent any reinforcement of Shikiko.
Pros, Cons, going to decide tonite so I can start setting planning for my troops. I don't htink I'll be going in with 100% prep.

RE: Plight of the Antietam
I don't think bombing causes units to come out of strat mode - at least in stock, latest update, scenario.
I was interested to see what was needed to neutralize Truk's forts so I did a simulation where I played the scenario head-to-head. I put Truk's defences all on Strat mode and pounded away with bombers and surface ships as close as 1K yards. The units [including infantry] never came out of strat mode, but it took exceedingly long for the damage to pile up enough to destroy the forts - 3 months of almost daily pounding IIR. I ended up landing raiders from APDs and paratroops before the fort was completely gone and the defenders never came out of Strat mode.
If Downfall has not changed that, you will have to delay the reinforcements at their train debarkation point. I invaded Hokkaido first, and once I held all six bases I landed at Fukuoka so that I could stop reinforcements coming to Kyushu across the rail bridge next to Shimonoseki. Just put a strong blocking force in the hex SE of Fukuoka. Of course I had to neutralize Tsushima and Iki Shima forts first and clear mines +I think the defences are much more developed in your scenario.

RE: Plight of the Antietam
Yes I'm sure his defenses are much stronger.
He's been mining that "Fusan-Tsushima-Fukukoka (sp)" line since day 1, has reinforced and built up all three of these bases. he's been using this "mine of death" (lol at the pun over "line of death". Sry, I amuse myself quite often) to shuffle troops from Korea to Japan, as all three bases are heavily capped (Karyu's over all three) and what's left of his fleet is located all in these three hexes.
The CAP's too much for me to break through, and a couple of attacks by my Helldivers at FukueJima went after less heavily defended task forces. He's using my tricks in reverse. That bastard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was seriously considering invading that hex on the far south of Kyushu. It's not on a rail hex, but it's wooded and at last check, he had upwards of 20-30k troops there. I think that hex, with it's forts and forest, will be too much to take as fast as I need to take it with casualties at an acceptable level. In short, I think it'll take too long to take, and beat up my forces too much.
The fort/forest hex in Shikiko (kochi?), same issues, but he won't be able to reinforce it, and it's not as heavily defended.
Korea has too many clear hex invasion sites for him to cover adequately, so I know this would fall fairly easily.
