I made the same mistake at Noumea. Dissappearing CV taskforces tend to turn up right at your doorstep. It makes sense.. Strike when your undetected.. We do the same, yet we fall for that trick. Human mind is a strange machine..

Yeah, really no excuse to slack off the job, the Brits are paying for my scatterbrain approach.

As expected, mini-KB is set for port attack this turn and goes to town on Perth harbour. The Kittyhawks do fairly well given the circumstances, I've got nothing of consequence in the harbour save for Dorsetshire and maybe ACMs cos they're so rare, everything else is expendable. Some Hurricanes and P-39s will be in position by the next turn if mini-KB sticks around for another go.

Quiet turn, mini-KB disappears, destination and heading unknown. It's been quiet on the Darwin front for a while now, I imagine there must be quite a traffic jam at Dili and Koepang given the multiple divisions tasked to invading Darwin and dealing with stacking limits on top of all that.

In other news
Hornet is the first flattop out of the yards, the Lexingtons will be the last out in 6 days game time. The CV TFs will be back in action by month end.

CTG has been cleaning up the remnants of Palembang's defenders on Sumatra while being content with doing bombardments of Tjilatjap and Bandoeng on Java, all told that's 3 IJA divisions plus a couple of engineer and tank regiments that are tied down doing the cleanup and containment, isn't much but every little bit diverted helps.

The 3 surviving Dutch MTBs have been shuttling between dashing into Kendari from Makassar every other turn in a bid to see if they could snag a soft target as well as make him paranoid about escorting every convoy, even in relatively secure areas.

This turn the MTBs finally luck out, engaging a convoy under the cover of a thunderstorm and closing to 3k yards before being spotted, they damage 2 Marus while losing one of their own, I'll keep sending the MTBs in till I lose 'em all.

Quiet turn, Saury makes a nuisance of herself when she enters Dili, she gets smacked around while managing to get a couple of torpedoes off but no hits. Lots of ships in Dili harbour.

The Netties don't make another show over Darwin and he knows through recon that I have fighters up to my gills in the Darwin area, drat!

Pacific KB has pulled into Rabaul, I know this because all my subs on picket duty just outside the harbour get picked up and attacked by Vals and Kates, nothing announces you're in the neighbourhood like a blanket of ASW.

4 Base Groups just left PH on their way to Oz, every 4E that the USAAF has is now concentrated at Charters Towers awaiting buildup of forward airfields. As I don't have significant anti-shipping assets I have no chance of stopping the IJA from gaining a foothold on Australian soil, how hard I fight for Darwin will depend on how heavy his initial landings will be. That said, Darwin has built up to fort level 3 so the least I can do is make him bleed a little for it before I fall back. SIGINT shows quite a few divisions committed to this little jaunt and unless he intends to open another axis of attack it is my intention to make this front a meat grinder and to keep up enough pressure on him that he stays invested in north Oz for some time to come.

In other AARs the allied players made a point of putting a small unit into the dot base behnd Darwin [Fenton?] and at Katherine to prevent a paratroop drop that could cut off the retreat path for Darwin's defenders. I think the Japanese had already taken places like Broome and Wyndham so they had airfields to do the job. Allied anti-tank is not great at this stage so a block in the rear by paratroops and bombing to inhibit movement would allow tanks to go from Wyndham down to Katherine before the Darwin guys got out.

39th Division is planning for an attack on Changsha.

China
I'm facing a total of 4 IJA divisions at Patung, intel shows 60+k troops in the hex which should cause supply problems for him. The 20th Group Army with 5 corps has been tasked to hold off any further advance, 2 corps are in contact, 2 more are on the way and the fifth is coming in from Siangtan, that's down near Changsha. This group army was blooded in the initial defence of Changsha so has average experience levels in the mid 40's. I've got 700 AV in the hex with another 1200 AV on the way. To make life a little more difficult for CTG, chinese corps on the road from Nanyang to Ankang are moving to positions east of Patung to isolate the 4 IJA divisions at Patung.

Ground combat at Patung (81,46)
Japanese Deliberate attack

I've made provisions to cover everything from south of Darwin to Alice Springs, west of Wyndham to Broome is a little iffy, nothing there except for base forces and a couple of armored battalions that have not been upgraded.

The TFs massing around Dili and Koepang have dropped off the face of the earth. I have search planes covering to the north of Darwin but have nothing to spare to cover the flanks so no idea where they've gone to or if they're just disbanded in port.

There's also still lots of shipping activity in the Bismarck Sea, especially up near Rabaul and the cluster of bases around Lae. In addition, this turn sees an invasion TF appear off Tagula Island, taking this ought to give CTG an excellent tripwire/forward airbase to cover just about the whole of the Coral Sea and the northern half of the Australia's eastern coastline while covering the flanks of PM and the Solomons, which has yet to see any activity but should logically be next on the to-do list of the IJN.

In other news
I get a couple of goodies this turn, including Dorsetshire, Atlanta, a bunch of APs and 2 more 4E bomb groups.

I always hate it when I get comments in the email, it never bodes well for my pixel warriors, especially when it's something I could have avoided. This turn, KB shows up again about 8 hexes to the northwest of Koumac (that's the base on the northern (true) tip of New Caledonia). The bulk of the 164th Infantry Regiment pays the price of leaky naval search and it is almost totally destroyed together with the 2 xAPs and 4 APDs carrying it from Ndeni to Brisbane.

On hindsight I thoroughly deserve this setback. I have been relatively unmolested by IJN subs except near Sydney and apart from KB raids have not had to deal with SAGs. This led me to being a little complacent and taking one too many risks with my convoys. Running a troop convoy on a route that essentially runs through no-man's land between the front line bases of both sides with nothing but the organic defences of the ships was just asking for trouble. Chutzpah knows no borders.

The loss of the regiment stings but ultimately doesn't matter as men and material are easily replaced and I already had a sliver of the 164th at Brisbane waiting to mate up with their now destroyed parent unit. The loss of the APDs is a major dent to my fast transport capability although to be fair I've never been one to use APDs in a major way so I guess I can't miss what I don't use so I guess most of the damage thus far is psychological.

What concerns me most at this point is my very porous naval search, I've been concentrating Cats on Oz's east coast and on the SOPAC islands and tweaking their search arcs such that they're covered during both the morning and afternoon phase and that's the second time KB has gotten through. Wondering if I'm doing it wrong or CTG's just had the devil's luck when it comes to getting past the Cats.

Of course now this means I get a chance for some payback, KB is carrying on a southeasterly course so I'm moving up an FG I have on Suva to Noumea and am going to try and set a little trap for it. Hope he bites hard.

I've always wondered how much of a role weather plays in search failures. Are you playing with realistic weather "ON"?

What kind of experience levels in search do your pilots have?

What altitude(s) do you use? The FAQ for newbies says 6000 is the best for range of detection but lower is better for chance of detection [below most clouds, I suppose]. I tend to use 4000 but have no idea if it works better.

I feel my detection rate is fairly good and I almost never use search arcs.. Perhaps try running without them for a while? Normal patrol altitude for me is 6000 feet, normal range.. (almost never extended).

@Cannonfodder and BBfanboy,
BB, realistic weather is ON, exp levels for the Cat drivers are in their 50s with skill levels in the 50-60s, CTG didn't bomb the Pacific AF to bits on Dec 7 so I have full crews and intact squadrons.

Roel, I use mostly random search arcs for our own game and I've been happy with the results. Wanted to give specific search arcs a go since it's a new game but it's looking like I'm borked (most likely) or by setting specific search arcs I'm actually making it easier to the enemy CVs to dash between zones of no cover during the movement phase of the day/night pulses.

I've had horrendous ops losses for Cats in my other PBEM before I figured out what was causing the losses so one of the first things I did in this game was to set their patrol attitudes to 6k and normal range which again is my usual setting for my other PBEM and that one seems to be working fine when it comes to spotting enemy TFs.

SWPAC
Have to stop calling every enemy CV TF I see KB unless I know for sure the composition of the TF. Anyways, the CV TF that appeared off New Caledonia the last turn has disappeared so no IJN Elite Pilot Massacre Part 2 (phooey). Have reset all my Cat search arcs to random to see if that works a little better.

I've got a couple of troop convoys in Suva that have had to move east to avoid the threat posed by the enemy CVs, at least till I have a fix on where they are. Everything else from the east coast of Oz to Pago Pago is either disbanded in port or moving east. Talk about spanner in the works, all those purdy TFs I had running around, and nicely labelled too. This random raiding surely is annoying but I see opportunity here, my CVs are all out of the yards and are waiting for their escorts to do the same, the TFs should be up in about 10 days game time, the numbers of Vals and Kates that have been spotted thus far seems to indicate not all his CVs are in one basket so if CTG keeps doing these raids without the full might of KB and comes away feeling like he can do it anytime he wants perhaps I can do something about it the next time he comes back.

Charters Towers is now a level 5 airfield and ready to operate 4Es, next up would be Cloncurry which would bring everything everything up to Katherine within range of my 4Es, only thing to do now is to wait for Base Groups to arrive and support the heavies.

First turn of having all my Cats set to random search arcs, no hits on the enemy CV TF, still no idea if it has penetrated further into the US-Oz SLOC or if the previous attack was just a hit and run. The random search arcs have revealed a couple of subs in the vicinity of Noumea though. I've got TK convoys inbound to Suva and Sydney, the former is in a holding pattern 2 days out from Suva while the latter is headed for Auckland for the time being. Troop convoys are either holding or unloading at Suva, I've got fighter cover over Suva and Noumea but nowhere else in SOPAC, convoys carrying base groups and more bombers and fighters are inbound from Pearl but won't be in the area anytime soon.

DEI
I saw a couple of ships unloading at Kali and set the B-10s to take a look, they and their escorting P-40s ran into a wall of Zeroes (or is that Zeros? Da-nit, now I'll have that thought racing about inside my head all day). 11 B-10s shot down without even having a look at the TF composition. This is followed by a shock attack at Tjilatjap by the IJA, it's a good thing the engineers managed to bring the fort levels back up to 1 the previous turn. Still, shan't be long now.

Ground combat at Tjilatjap (51,102)
Japanese Shock attack
Attacking force 23953 troops, 217 guns, 78 vehicles, Assault Value = 660
Defending force 9632 troops, 41 guns, 135 vehicles, Assault Value = 190

So CTG goes "why Hello HMW Warspite and HMS Prince of Wales" in his email. Drat. Turns out it wasn't a hit and run. Zeros sweep Sydney (action, reaction) before Vals and Kates descend on it on a port attack. The BBs came off better than the attack suggested, Warspite is barely scratched at 6/0/0 while PoW is at 42/12(3)/5(2), up from 18/0/0 (she was repairing after an incident in port had bumped her to 62/0/0 in Feb '42). The way things are going either she sinks or by the time I get her back in action it'll be V-Day.

I had a 4 DD ASW group trying to sweep away some pesky subs off Sydney and they weren't attacked, pretty ballsy move by CTG not setting a reserve on naval attack. Anyways, that 4 DD TF and a TF centred around Warspite are going to pay a night visit to those CVs to see if we can put a couple of holes in them pretty CVs. The DDs and Warspite are set to run for NZ after their attack to put some distance between them and the enemy CVs. I've even thrown in the kitchen sink in the form of a TF centred on Adelaide and consisting of 3 AMCs and that old Dutch gunboat Soerabaja, the Kitchen Sink TF will make a 3 hex run out and back in again so I don't expect it to hit anything.

I have a motley group of fighters over Sydney, 1 P-40E, 1 Buffalo, 1 Blenheim and 1 Kittyhawk squadron. They're set on layered cap over Sydney. Not expecting to stop the buzzsaw as apart from the P-40s the other 2 squadrons have exp levels in the 30-40s.

So that's the plan, the turn is all done but I've still got a couple of hours before I have to send it off. I'm considering the following alternatives to what I've set.

1) I have 30+ Hudsons and 40+ Wirraways in Sydney training, I'm tempted to throw them at the enemy CVs but they'll probably be massacred and if they survived probably wouldn't be able to hit anything.
2) I'm thinking of having Warspite, the DDs and the Kitchen Sink stick around instead of scooting off after trying a night intercept (which may or may not happen) and having them react into the enemy CVs come daylight. Risking a BB to mess up some CVs is ok by me anyday.
3) Having set all his planes on port attack and seeing I had a 4 DD element so close to his CVs, what do you think CTG will do next? He's obviously excited he caught 2 BBs in port so I reckon he's going to want to stick around and finish them off but the thing is, will he reserve some planes on naval attack knowing that I have surface assets in the area or is he still going to go all in on Sydney?

Peanut gallery, do your thing.

CTG is very experienced and has shown himself to be aggressive but not foolish in previous encounters. Remember how slippery his carriers were north of Oz when you tried the intercept? I wouldn't expect him to stay in the same hex or to not reserve a naval strike. I would run able ships north and south in hopes of saving some.

Events conspire to make it a quiet turn, the enemy CVs moved SW in the night and are now 7 hexes SE of Sydney. Warspite's TF sat at anchor in Sydney and made no attempt to either escape or intercept the enemy CVs. The DD TF also didn't manage to intercept, daylight finds the DDs well to the east of Sydney, they'll move to Noumea to top up their bunkers. As for Soerabaja she's out all by her lonesome 4 hexes SE of Sydney after failing to connect with the enemy, she'll make her way back to port.

An additional 2 P-39 squadrons have joined the CAP above Sydney, making for a total of 120+ fighters.

Sub War
An I-boat enters Sydney and is engaged by Warspite's screen, hitting a mine on it's way out. Hope she sinks

Warspite sallies out on the night pulse of 21st April in a bid to intercept the enemy CVs, she doesn't connect and retires towards NZ. She's out of harm's way as of 22nd April.

As for the enemy CVs, naval search now shows a majority, if not all of Japan's CVs/CVLs are operating together. Current position of the CVs is 7 hexes due south (true) of Sydney. They moved west for the 21st April turn and I was concerned he was looking to strike at Melbourne where I had quite a few merchies from the DEI and Perth in the yards but it seems they've reversed course and were last seen headed east. 2 more fighter squadrons join their brethren at Sydney.

Apart from ships in port in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, I do not have any shipping in range of KB at this moment, I do have 2 troop convoys inbound Sydney but they've been routed to Auckland for the time being until I'm sure KB has cleared the neighbourhood. The SOPAC area is busy as I'm taking advantage of the knowledge of KB's whereabouts and am unloading troop/supply convoys as fast as the docks will take them.

Sub War
Shark, doing picket duty outside Palembang, sinks a small TK. She's heavily damaged in the process and is limping for Soerabaja.
