Does Panzer Corps allow tanks to overun?

Post by guyd333 »

The original Panzer General allowed tanks to overun--keep killing--a group of weakened opponents, but this feature seems to have been left out. Why?

Panzer General allowed tanks to keep attacking weakened units after each kill. Did Panzer Corps keep this feature.

Posting the same question twice wasn't totally necessary, we heard ya. [:'(] [;)]

But, no the feature was left out deliberately for reasons of game balance. I loved overruns in PG and PG II as well, but uh, it was completely unfair once you got good at it and highly questionable from a realism standpoint. This has been heavily discussed on the forums here, (do a search if you like, there are a lot of well through-out arguments out there on both sides) but one of the big reasons is the new supply system. With tanks able to worm their way in between the enemy ranks, enemies (and especially human players online) would find resupply VERY difficult.

I missed it at first, but only for a very brief time. Soon I realized that panzers had their own unique set of benefits (fast movement, heavy firepower, high initiative) that more than satisfied the maneuver warfare requirements of "shock and awe". Believe me, I honestly feel like Panzer Corps is a better game for not incorporating that old feature.

I understand the idea of ballance, and that is fine with me.

It's a tricky one, because when a company makes a game that's a "spiritual successor" to an earlier game, but elects to change some key component, some backlash is pretty much inevitable. Fortunately, the PC team had enough testers and beta-testers to show that, nostalgia aside, leaving overrun out made for a better game.

Now the trick is to remember that panzers are your heavily armed and armored scalpel force, meant for diving into the weak points of an enemy's line and creating a breakthrough for other units to exploit. Who needs overun, that's the way I look at it. When I'm doing it right, my infantry and towed artillery are STRUGGLING to keep up with the driving pace of the Schwerpunkt spearheaded by my panzers. If those units are waiting for a breakthrough or being static... I know I've lost the initiative and need to drastically alter my tactics. If you blunt your panzers up against heavy anti-tank units or fortified cities, well... you desire what you get for misusing a functional tool. [:-] [;)]

The only unit that can overrun but really I should not call it that is the recon unit. It can move a few spaces them move again if it attacks I think that is it. So perhaps in a way this change also indirectly makes the Recon unit more important than it already is because it is the only unit that can move a few spaces and them move again.

There is a Peace that is only found at the other end of War.

Recons are great to sneak into little spaces and give a good spanking to that artillery unit that's making your attack impossible ;). Yeah, finding recon even more important than what it already was in vanilla PG (and it was a vital unit back then).

I think the no overrun rule is fine and balanced, but I do think it somehow still should be in the game for armored formations dealing with very weakened support units (soft artillery). Maybe it was OP if you could pull it off vs every unit, but against those already weak support units, I think it would be fine...currently you usually have to deal with using your only per-turn attack by your strong armored unit into an almost dead support unit you -know- will be reinforced next turn (and keep being a pain in the ass), or using it against the main defence units you're trying to break to open a gap.

Not sure about this one, I think the way it was before, yeah, it was a too good ability, but the way its now is a bit too limiting...

i think there is something very wrong with a 1 strength unit bouncing out in retreat in the middle of no man's land and next turn it gets back to a powerful 10 strength instantly.

The lack of overrun makes it even more painfully annoying.

bouncing is nearly always an advantage for the defender unless unit is surrounded and the attacker has not way to know if it is going to happen.
