Having been a football referee for roughly 13 years in my youth, I would also say that I know the rules ... [:)] Also,I made a quick check on some British sport pages that commented upon the match and found none that even used the word offside. They just say it was a brilliant play.

I say that you are wrong ... but never mind - what has happened has happened and nothing we say will change anything.

We can at least agree on our disagreement [;)]

I shocked Historiker this morning and sent him a turn. That's 4 turns in the last 3 days from me. Someone may need to send a paramedic to check on him. [:D]

I didn't know that you were the football referee - but in this case I still disagree with you per! [:D]

BTW, the off-side rules were changed (i.e. better explained) in early 2000's IIRC!

Offence

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball
touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee,
involved in active play by:

• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
gaining an advantage by being in that position

The last paragraph is what is interesting here - because it can be interpreted either way - in the situation of last night it is 100% clear that scorer Navas gained advantage by being in that position...

P.S.
Funny enough papers in Spain and Germany claimed the opposite (i.e. how lucky the Spain really was regarding non sanctioned penalties and goal scored)... [;)]

I love living in the NW tier.......except for today. Seattle has one major flaw. It tends, more often than not to throw away it's history in favor of new shiny stuff. Just read today that the city council has "no plans" for the vintage 1920 street-cars that had been running for nearly 20 years but ended in 2005 due to a stupid expansion space for the SAM (Seattle Art Museum) Cars have been sitting, albeit well preserved, in a warehouse all that time. Most people including myself felt that after the Viaduct came down and stuff that it would be re-set up. Now the council says they'd rather have sleek modern light vehicles. St Louis is now interested in buying the cars for "their" city restoration and they think the charming cars are awesome.

Wanna head slap each and every one of our political Fat Cats. It's the Triangle Garage all over again.

You are overanalysing that sentence ("gaining an advantage etc"). Since there is no referee with the ability to see into the future, the referee has to make a call for every situation as it happens. You can't "back up". Period. These are two different situations and that is why I tell you that where Navas was in the first is totally irrelevant, since he was on-side when he scored. Otherwise, there would be a need for rules on how long you are supposed to "go back" in time to rule on the current situation. 3 seconds? 5 seconds? 15? one minute? Surely you see that this would cause even more absurd situations.

Edited for clarification.
