OT I've Had A Really Bad Week

Post by KG Erwin »

To start off, on Monday I had a low blood sugar episode at work and had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital, which luckily was just a block away from my office. My blood sugar level dropped to 23, and I was out of it. I got through that OK, but just today, on my way to work, I had to slow down to miss a dog that ran out in the road in front of me and got rear-ended by a Ford truck. It completely crumpled my trunk, so my car is totaled. Thankfully, no one (including the dog) was injured, but it's been a hell of a week. My 2004 Cavalier LS, which I loved, is now junk. It was paid for, but it had full coverage on it. I hated that, and I gotta buy another vehicle. All of this happened during the week after my 55th birthday.

Dude, 23. You are luck to still be with us. Sorry about the car but I am glad you are ok. Do you check you sugar level often?

That's the tough part about being a Type I insulin-dependent diabetic. When you think that you have it under control, a sudden low sugar episode occurs, and with me they occur so quickly that I'm passed out before I can do anything about it. Fortunately, this occurs only once every few years. Even after having the disease for 46 years, these are scary episodes. It's happened with me when I'm driving, and I've literally gotten lost on my way to work. Fotunately, at those times I was able to pull over somewhere, eat part of my prepacked breakfast/lunch, and find my way back.

The thing about diabetes is that one can still lead a productive life, so it is not necessarily a debilitating disease. After all, I've worked for a state govt agency for over 25 years, and played in a band for 22 years (I play bass guitar), and I plan on retiring from the state. You just have to control it, and not let it control you.

Mr Erwin,
I want to help by recommending you buy a diesel car. The Mitsubishi Lancer 1.8ltr diesel is a good candidate. The bad news is that you have to buy it in Canada (or Japan). The good news is it gets over 40MPG & (heres the clincher) you can make your own fuel for less than $1.50 per gallon!!! [:D]

PS- Keep those glucose tablets handy. Talk to a Doc about the neuropathy that comes with diabetes. I saw how much it affected my bro's vision & judgement. Good luck with that. [8D]

You'd think with today's modern technology they'd have developed something similar to a pacemaker that continuously monitors blood sugar levels and automatically gives you a kick when you need it in an emergency like this. Yeah it’d be a hassle to have to wear an implant just under the skin somewhere, but it might save lives for those who crash really quickly before they can do anything to stop it as you went through.

Anyway glad you came through it ok.

The one that shouldn't be over eight is it? He takes a prick of blood then uses the machine. He loves getting everyone to do it but sets the needle abit bigger..

Yes it's very high indeed. He is petrified of hospitals though and hates going for the regular chekc ups. He did for awhile get it down to arounf 5 or 6 for a few months but then wham went up again. They keep threatening him with going onto injections.

I have hereditary bi lateral neuropathy, I'm in chronic pain with my feet somedays are worse than others. Been on all kinds of meds to kill the pain but nothing worked. Usually need sticks to get around will eventually need a chair. First got pain when I was eleven. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 28.

Those who have it through B12 deficiency and Diabetes in away are lucky as it can be reversed my case it's tough luck and gets steady worse. So unlike my Dad I hope all diabetics really put in the effort to sat well and healthy. Neuropathy isn't good and you need to do your best to stay it off.

Several people having revealed their physical ailments in the General Discussion and from people I know with physical ailments. Seems to help me with a good attitude adjustment. So I'm a little less negative about my own situation with a spirit of gratitude for what I have.
