research upgrade setting question - no Jockmeister please!

Post by obvert »

Hello,

I've had an issue that I don't understand with research.

In my A6M5 research factories, the color went blue at the beginning of December to show I presume that there was less than a month left until production was possible. The numbers began counting up on the side of those factories as well. Like A6M5 Zero (72).

I had upgrades checked to 'no.' As I understood it and as it has worked before, this meant that the factories would remain as R n D factories once the research of that model was complete. I let the factory keep going, counting up toward (100) thinking I could only change it over to the next model in line once the research was complete. Once it reached (100) they changed to production factories automatically, still clicked with a 'no' in the upgrade column!

I have not had this happen during other change-overs. From A6M3 to A6M3a it worked fine, they stayed as research and I manually made the change to the next research project.

What went wrong?

I am happy to send a game save, but I'm not sure how to attach it. Do i simply change the extension to a txt file?

In the meantime here is a pic of the combined research and production factories a few days ago showing the A6M5 factories before they changed to production.

Thanks Pax.

This is the file before the factories spontaneously changed over.

Here is a file after they changed.

I can't remember if I switched the upgrade button back at this point since they were already production factories. I don't have the save right when they changed as I thought I had made some mistake and didn't consider that it may have been a possible bug until Pax suggested I post here to check.

I had the same in a game not with obvert (though the other problem is in our game).

The A6M3 factory in Nagoya was at 29(51) on R&D with No-Yes-Yes on May 31st 1942. On June 1st, it was a producing factory and no longer a R&D factory as inteded. Shouldn't it stay a R&D factory when upgrade is "no"?

I think UPGRADE serves to keep factory to produce current model and not to switch to new one coming on-line.
If you want to keep your RnD factory for RnD you have to change it to next plane model BEFORE the current one comes online.

Well if that is the case then I certainly misunderstood this feature. Thanks Barb!

It was a bit tough to do this time as it happened in the middle of the month. I'll do some tests and see when the factories can be switched over in various situations.

It sounds like this should have been in the main forum if this is indeed the way things work. Something new every day in this game.

The settings 'may' need to be No-Yes-No

You always can talk with your opponent to replay turn and manualy change them to next model.
You will losse only 72 points that way
Also if this will be confirmed as bug michaelm can probably edit save and change those factories back to r&d, of course with Jockmeister permission.

Well, in this case I might just have to eat it. It costs me, but not that much as it's just the A6M line, and after mid-43 they're outclassed anyway. Instead of getting the A6M5b 6-7 months ahead, I'll most likely get it 1-2 months in advance. I'll lose a good 60k supplies getting two new factories researching, but now I know to be very careful with this. I'll do some tests to figure out exactly what conditions allow the factory to be changed without damage to it.

And, if I ever need to get pools up in a hurry, I have about ten factories to produce zeros now! [;)]

Also A6M5 is good plane at least not much worst from 5c. Good speed and range allowing to escort CV bombers on max range when drop tanks used.

And you are right M5, M5c or M8 when `44 start will not make any difference.

Worst side of this is that you lose lots of R&D factories that you cantnow convert to resarch different planes when A6M will reach dead end

Set them to no production. When the R&D finishes, they will stay as R&D and you can change to other R&D or another production.
I set them to Y-N-Y and ran a few turns from the first save and ...

So N-Y-N is the way to keep them R&D factories AND the R&D?

Thanks Michael! [&o][&o][&o]

Looks like you set it to N-Y-N from the pic. I had always thought 'no' in production would keep the factory from producing research as well, but if that is not the case, then I'll go forward with this.

This is great to know and the pain of this particular mistake will be small compared to doing this later in a more critical situation.

R&D will always be expended.
But once R&D finishes and the first time a plane is produced, it loses its R&D switch.
That is why several people change the R&D before it hits 100 on the last month - just stop get around the production turning off R&D.
