here comes the noob - first impressions

Post by whiskeytown »

[:D] - whiskeytown here - going to give this game a shot and post some impressions/thoughts/hopes

long time gamer - started on Avalon Hill (squad leader/third reich) - but I have been almost completely isolated to the WWII European theater or world wide games (Hearts of Iron) where there is a lot of land based combat but not fleet - mostly more in the tactical realm but I like a good strategic or beer and pretzels game too

been recently reading "The Rising Sun" by John Toland and got an itch up my butt to try some pacific combat - had a slight heart attack at the price but I like the realism - wish there was a demo but I'll cough up the dough for the physical download (I want the manual in paper form obviously - LOL) -

before I bought this I watched a series of about 7 videos on youtube by someone - I will go back and watch the 3rd series and peruse the forums a bit - right now I'm downloading the update but will have more to post once I start playing with the game a bit - I heard the Coral Sea is a good place to start

just wanted to say hi and let ya all know I was here and you have a new noob to sink - let's see if I'm getting too old to learn new tricks or not - LOL

Welcome aboard, whiskeytown! [:)]

From your mention of Third Reich (not known as the simplest game around) you will get way more than your money's worth from this Grand Dame. As you are starting off, don't try to worry about doing everything and learning everything at once. Focus on a few small things at a time, and add on from there.

If anyone besides Mandrake and Sprior are playing "beer and pretzel" WITP-AE I'd be curious.[&o][&o][:D] Well worth the purchase; a rough calculation is in order here. So far I'm at 1/2 a cent an hour against the purchase price. This does not include enjoying AARs or testing michaelm's patience. I hope you enjoy!

well, just an initial sinking around on easy got me a decisive victory on Coral Sea - no idea how - I know bad weather grounded nearly every patrol - I finally found a CV or two near the end and the battles were pretty gruesome - japs got on shore but couldn't evict us - I guess yorktown had to reroute back to port near the end -

I think what saved me is not losing port morsbey - I sunk a transport or two but I think my plane losses were worse then them

I'll try historical difficulty next - not changing or messing with many defaults right now - I am taking the sub task forces off computer control though

I will def. check out the shockwave videos - mega thanks

Welcome to the lunatic asylum. [:D]

I remember ages ago (maybe even in vanilla WitP days) someone had made a list of "side effects" of playing WitP. Does anyone still have that?

Welcome, dude.

Lots of good people here to help you with your first steps and thereafter. Don't put too much credence in the manual. Although it's good for a basic primer, the game has changed much since the (antiquated) version of the manual was published. For fine-tuning your skills, I'd rely much more on the lunatics and scoundrels here.

Thanks Omat - the video tutorials are especially useful. There was a post the other day that gave a link (I think to a newbie AAR) do you or anyone else know where that is please? I forget who posted it or where they did....

the biggest side effect of WITP AE, is not allowing your children to enter military service..

.. after you realize how twisted military commanders really are

*hnmm.. do i unload that task force into those coastal defences?"

"oh good.. only 140 squads lost and 335 squads disabled on that last deliberate attack against singapore"

"that battleship has 90 float damage.. do i scuttle it, or send it as a decoy ahead of my carriers?"

etc etc etc [;)]

scary thing is .. a real life board of the pacific war looked exactly the same

anyone ever read Ender's Game? [:)]

Welcome,

I highly recommend reading some of the longer AARs. You will learn a lot bot about the forum members and the game there.

I am a former ASL man.Still play it once in a while. I generally go to Winter Offensive for a day or two.

But this is the beat computer war game out there.

I ended up playing the Coral Sea about 5 times today as the US

1. decisive win on easy - didn't mess with much - crushed the enemy like grapes - nothing to say here
2. draw on historical - I lost my carriers early and brought the rest of the ships back at cruise speed to Noumea, where they got picked off piece by piece -
3. win on historical - I managed to get most of the Port Moresby invading forces and sunk one carrier and crippled another at the cost of the Lexington
4. draw on historical - once again - a lot of ships went down in the water - sunk 18 to 9 but still, most of theirs were transports and most of mine were capital ships

5. Marginal win on historical - got kinda smart this time - relocated more airgroups to port moresby and further up the Australian coast - as usual, my CV's smoked the Moresby invasion force, but this time they got a lot of my fighters - I ended up running full speed back to base instead of sticking around and getting shreded by full contingents of japanese bombers - the last couple days their taskforce started beating up on brisbane so I moved one TF with about half it's fighters in a position to give them some torpedoes and it got sank - shoulda stayed at port - I don't think I scratched their CV's this time

going to watch the intro videos for some more tips - gotta do the holiday road trip tomorrow but maybe I'll cram one in tomorrow night

I remember only Sardaukar's Newbie Grand Campaign Tutorial.

tm.asp?m=2940156

But this aar is for members which want to start the Grand Campaign the first time (as allied player). So not the basics.

If there was an other aar I missed it...Maybe alfred knows it ;)

Hope it helps....
