I'm just gonna skip to October 13th, nothing much cool happened in between really. Japs at Manila bombed a lot is the main thing that's been going on.

But now that I got a proper conn and all, I can afford some screenshots. First is Luzon, where the Yanks have the Japanese bottled up at Manila. But the Japanese troops there are proving hard for the US army to digest... Aparri is an airfield 7 and potentially an airfield 9, there are a lot of engineers working on that and Superforts are being moved over as damaged status permits.

In Thailand, 14th Army are deadlocked with the IJA. The numbers actually add up in favour of the IJA, I would estimate about 6500 AV of Japanese vs 5000 AV of Commonwealth. However, a big chunk of the Japanese force has been cut off in Vietnam due to the armoured thrust into northern Vietnam, so perhaps Bill Slim has something of an advantage there?

But I can't really see much progress happening in the SEAC front for a while.

Much of the CV fleet is now upgrading at Pearl, but despite that I've got 6 CVs and a CVL at Naga - 4 American CVs, 2 Brit CVs and CVL Unicorn. Given the Superforts on Luzon I think thats sufficient, along with a bunch of CVEs, to escort an invasion force of Taihoku.

Here's the global situation.

Immediate plans : reduce Manila, invade Formosa via landing on Taihoku, got almost 1000 AV earmarked for Taihoko and there will be a reinforcement wave.

Do whatever can be done in Thailand but I fear not much. Potential invasion of Samah is planned but it'll be a small job and isn't a priority.

Longer range plans :
I think the main plan over the next quarter will be the capture of Shanghai. When Formosa is captured, troops will land at Wenchow - only lightly defended - and then march overland to Shanghai. If they dont make Shanghai thats fine, as there are plenty of potentially high airfield bases on the Chinese coast which can then be used to reduce the Japanese homeland.

Most of the available IJA in China seems to be facing the Chinese army at Paoshan, or fighting the Chinese remnant near Sian. A good 2000 AV of Americans in the far southeast might be enough to make China shatter, though the objective is merely to obtain big airfields close to Japan itself.

I also have plans to invade Okinawa and Daito Shoto during this sort of timeframe, but we shall see.

Another day of not a lot. He has some sort of convoy at Taihoku, Ive sortied my DD flotilla from Aparri and its en route, should hit the place on the 15th. Arleigh Burke in charge. It hasn't been spotted by Jap aircraft so might be a surprise.

Whatever else happens in the war, the IJA is still a big beast. Not sure if its wise of him to concentrate so far forward at the front though, but I suspect he's already written these guys off given they are cut off. That said. his troops in Vinh are moving south, so maybe there are plans afoot to try and break out of the pocket?

I saw where those Jills came from yesterday - this is why a night attack is a bad idea. Theres not much point attempting to preserve airframes by night attacks, unless you plan on immediate evac, when the Allies can do this. 100 Superforts meets a paltry air defence, hampered by the Japanese apparent inability to fly (I believe his pilot skill and morale is in the toilet these days, probably doesnt help). I am assured the Nicks are supposed to fly CAP but they didnt show up. ~50 Nicks and ~50 Jills destroyed.

I kinda suspect that my foe does not appreciate the importance of trained pilots... OTOH the attrition at this point in the war is staggering so maybe even if you do theres nothing you can do.

Troop transports are loading at Naga now for my Taihoku invasion. It's an 11 knot convoy though and a fair distance to go, so landing in a week I would guess if not longer.

6 CVs, 10 CVEs, one big SAG to cover. 6 old slow BBs for bombardment and amphibious support. The amphib TF is 100 ships of APAs, AKAs, LSTs and LCI(G)s plus some big guns to cover.

Decided to switch targets to Formosa again given I'll be landing there soon. Holy crap. Even I was awed by this one.There was a reasonable Japanese CAP for a change, with decent a/c involved, but what can they do against 150 heavies??? 15 Allied a/c lost today, mostly the escorting fighters, 150 Japanese aircraft wiped out, and the airfield at Taipei is gone.

I think we're probably going to call it at this point, as Japan is a total wreck. I'm not sure what state her economy is in, but I assume it's in a state of total collapse. The IJA is still a potent force but a lot of it is cut off, or far from where it needs to be. I believe the IJN still has a few of the later CVs and a BB or two, enough for a small taskforce, but I think fuel is basically out.

If some masochist out there feels like they want to play a dying Empire, speak now or forever hold your peace. [:D]

If not, assuming we do decide to quit, I'm gonna go over the Japanese position and outline it on this AAR I think.
