Flunkey: Your Majesty, the Americans are revolting!

The King: Did we tax soap?

Flunkey: No Your Majesty, the tea.

The king: They bathed in tea?

Flunkey: No Your Majesty, they put the tea in the water.

The King: Instead of adding boiling water to the tea, you mean?

Flunkey: No Your Majesty in the harbour. Dressed as Red Indians.

The King: Good Lord. That's revolting.

Flunkey: Yes Your Majesty.

Happy Independence Day.

Actually, the British Empire (later the British Commonwealth) were world leaders in …...…

Freedom
Military might
Technology

..…. all the way up to 1914.

They held the lead in cricket till 1877 when they first lost the Ashes.

In the Americas the people asked for representation in the British Parliament. They were told “no” which was unfortunate.

The 1.00% tax on tea was the straw that broke the donkey’s back and the revolution began.

The British were astonished that anybody would want to leave the Commonwealth!

If they had representation in parliament then 140 years later we might have got Woodrow Wilson as president of a United Commonwealth of Nations ( “UCON”)
